The first depth charges were developed by the <span id="ref86803"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/United-Kingdom" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">British</a> in <span id="ref86804"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/World-War-I" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">World War I</a> for use against German submarines. They consisted of a canister filled with explosives that was rolled or dropped off the <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb" data-term="stern" href="https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/stern" data-type="EB">stern</a> of a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/ship" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">ship</a> in the presumed vicinity of the submerged <a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/submarine-naval-vessel" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">submarine</a>. The canister would sink through the water, and its explosive charge would be detonated at a preselected depth by means of a hydrostatic valve. The depth charge rarely exploded close enough to sink the submarine, but its shock waves loosened the submarine鈥檚 joints and damaged its instruments, thus forcing it to the surface, where it could be finished off by naval gunfire. An attacking ship would try to drop a pattern of depth charges around a submarine to increase the chances of one exploding near enough to damage the sub.</p><span class="marker MOD1 mod-inline"></span><span class="marker PREMOD2 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">Late in World War I, devices were developed to <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb" data-term="propel" href="https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/propel" data-type="EB">propel</a> depth charges through the air over distances of 100 yards (91 metres) or more, thus widening the effective radius at which a ship could attack submarines. The <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Royal-Navy" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Royal Navy</a>鈥檚 <span id="ref86805"></span>Hedgehog depth charge of <span id="ref86806"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/World-War-II" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">World War II</a> consisted of a salvo of 24 small high-explosive bombs that could be launched to a distance of 250 yards (228 metres) and which exploded on contact as they sank through the water. Atomic depth charges are fitted with a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/nuclear-weapon" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">nuclear warhead</a> and have a vastly increased killing radius because of their great explosive power.
