I’ve partnered with another professional genealogist, Sharon Atkins of It’s All Relatives, to develop a series of guides, tools and templates to assist genealogy entrepreneurs looking to start their own business or to add new products and services to their existing business.

When I started my own business over five years ago, most of the tools available were geared towards other types of businesses, not genealogy businesses. And the genealogy-related business information that was available focused on genealogists seeking research clients.

The goal of GenBiz Solutions™ is more than just producing “reading material” that gets filed away once read. The GenBiz Solutions™ Guides are paired with one or more practical templates that can be used to plan out ideas, products, and success.

Each month we’ll have new guides, authored by business owners who have found success with specific strategies and tools. Topics will cover the areas of marketing, product development, planning, as well as the day-to-day issues that many solopreneurs in the genealogy industry face.

Please take a minute to visit the GenBiz Solutions™ site at http://genbiz.solutions. You can also follow on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/genbizsolutions) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/genbizsolution).

* * *

Innovative solutions for genealogy-related businesses
GenBiz Solutions™ Guides Released

Chicago, Illinois: GenBiz Solutions™ Guides hit the marketplace today to meet the demands of the business owner with a genealogy-related business focus. Independent of developing genealogical research skills, today’s successful genealogy-related business owner must develop or enhance specific business skills. Each GenBiz Solutions™ Guide, geared towards the business side of genealogy, addresses a specific business topic. Initial guides released include:

Starting a Genealogy Business

Creating a Marketing Plan

Building a Business Blog

Building Media Relationships

Creating a Sales Process

Each guide is priced at $4.95. In addition, purchase the All In Bundle – all five introductory guides – for only $19.95, a 20% savings. Visit http://genbiz.solutions for more information.

Filling a Need for Business Education Materials

“Genealogy-related business owners come to this industry from a variety of backgrounds and with a mix of experience. Because there are multiple aspects to running any business, as well as aspects uniquely applicable to a genealogy-related business, we saw a need to devise a way to allow each business owner to select educational materials specific to their situation,” said Thomas MacEntee, owner of High Definition Genealogy. “Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as hanging out your shingle and starting to perform research for clients. Today’s genealogy professional is faced with making decisions about business structure, what services to offer, how to attract clients and how to compete.”

Real Advice from Real Genealogy Business Owners

“Tapping into the real life experiences of current business owners, we’ve created GenBiz Solutions™ Guides. Guides are authored by a group of diverse professionals and each examines a relatively narrow topic. This approach allows the genealogy-related business owner to select a guide or multiple guides specific to their unique needs, for a very minimal investment.” continued MacEntee.
GenBiz Solutions™ Guides are delivered electronically in a digital format; they offer knowledge, practical advice and include specific tools and templates for the business owner to incorporate into their practice.

About GenBiz Solutions™

GenBiz Solutions™ is an innovative series of guides for genealogists seeking to establish or enhance a successful genealogy-related business. GenBiz Solutions™ is a partnership of genealogy professionals, coordinated and led by Thomas MacEntee. I traveled with Jane Haldeman, president of the Illinois State Genealogical Society, who set up a booth for ISGS in the vendor hall.

If you are in the Southern Illinois / St. Louis, Missouri area next August, mark your calendars for the next GSSI conference featuring D. Learn how to ensure that your hard work carries on. Through a combination of planning, common sense, and new technologies, we’ll review how to create an action plan for preserving your genealogy research.

Genealogy: The Future Is Now: Do you have trouble keeping up with technology, especially programs, apps and websites that other genealogists seem to be using these days? You’re not alone. After a quick review of how much has changed in the past 30 years, you’ll learn what’s hot, what’s now and how to prepare for the genealogy technology of the future. Participants will gain more than just an overview of current technologies used in genealogy; they’ll understand how to seek out new technologies and determine what works and doesn’t work for their own genealogical research.

Scarce New World: Will Privacy Kill Genealogy?: Learn the history of privacy and our ancestors and how the changing perceptions of what should and shouldn’t be kept private will have a serious impact on access to records for genealogical research in the future. Our ancestors lived very public lives – anything they did once they left their home was fodder for public consumption. And thankfully so since we now have access to a multitude of records. But did our ancestors realize that those records would be so easily accessed 100 or more years later? And what about the current move to restrict access to frequently relied-upon records sets – will there be anything left for 22nd century genealogists to research?

Wearables and Genealogy: Wacky and Wild or Worth the Wait?: What if you could wear a device that would tell you all about a person as you stood in front of their gravestone? What about a device that told you that a DNA match was attending the same genealogy conference? These ideas may seem too futuristic, but they are available now and waiting to be used by genealogists and family historians. As technology advances, the Internet is being made personal in the form of wearable devices. These devices can not only track how far you’ve walked, what you’ve eaten and more, they can also present information when you are in front of a gravestone or a historical site. Learn about Google Glass, Smart Watches and in-development devices that are slated to become the next new genealogy tools.

Speaker’s rates are negotiable depending upon format and number of presentations given. In addition, topics can be customized for your specific needs. Please feel free to contact me for more information.

©2014, copyright Thomas MacEntee

New Lecture Topics on Genealogy and Technology is a post from: High-Definition Genealogy

Inspiration: Sister Corita’s Rules

Thomas MacEntee

Marketing

Starting any new business – let along a genealogy business – isn’t easy and I often look for inspiration in various areas. We’re talking something you take to heart, you study constantly, you actually order as a poster for your office . . . and you marvel at not only its complexity but also its simplicity. Such is the case for Sister Corita’s Rules (click the image above to embiggen).

Who Was Corita Kent?

Corita Kent was an artist and a nun in the order in the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She was also an educator and taught art at the Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, California whose work in the field of serigraphs had a profound interest on modern art in the 1960s and 1970s. What about personal goals? Any predictions for 2014? It’s all here . . .

Business Objectives

One sign of a successful business, in my opinion, is one that is adaptable and can deal with change as a means of growth. In 2013 I spent quite a bit of my time – up to 50% – providing consulting services to clients. This advice was mainly focused on marketing and reaching the genealogy community.

In 2014, I’ve restructured my offerings to get away from hourly billings and more towards “products” that focus on content marketing. Examples include blog posts, articles, marketing copy, and webinar development.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I love to write and many of my clients agree that I write rather well. So that’s where the focus is in 2014. In addition, writing is a good partner to the goal of “more passive income” which means “write it once and wait for the royalties.” So where I can I am willing to forego an upfront payment and instead take an author or editor royalty on the sale of the finished product.

Publishing

I’ve been fortunate enough to learn the ins and outs of self-publishing over the past year; to the point of having nine of my own e-books available for sale at Amazon. And I’ve translated my skills and experience in using the Amazon Kindle Publishing platform to edit and publish the entire Legacy Quick Guide series in Kindle format.

Look for more e-books from me and from other genealogy authors on the Kindle platform as well as other formats in 2014.

Travel

A big year for travel including trips to Australia, Burbank, Indianapolis, New York, Palm Springs, Richmond, St. Paul, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Sandusky, Southern Illinois, and local Chicagoland cities. Much of the travel will be related to genealogy conferences and speaking engagements. Given that I traveled over 50,000 miles in 2013, I may come close to doubling that amount in 2014.

Presentations

Having delivered over 80 individual lectures in 2013, mostly in-person, I’m looking forward to about the same number for 2014. I’m happy to report that I’ve been able to greatly increase the number of webinars offered, especially to genealogy societies across the United States. This is an indicator, at least in my eyes, that more and more societies are comfortable with the concept of webinars and are using them to bring more speakers to their members at a better price point.

In terms of topics, I now have close to 80 different topics from which to present, with many new subjects. I’m excited about some of the new lectures such as 7 Habits of Highly Frugal Genealogists and the new “super powers” series.

Personal Goals

I’m not done putting together my personal goals and some of them, frankly, are too personal to put in a blog. Taking better care of myself is an overarching goal which encompasses reducing my weight, getting more exercise and staying on top of chronic medical issues. Last year was a real eye-opener for me in terms of medical issues and I count my blessings each and every day that I can get up each morning on my own, dress myself, feed myself and earn a living.

One Word: Gratitude

Well maybe more than one word but I am so thankful that I’m pursuing my dream of running my own business and helping others learn more about genealogy and family history. Other words and phrases that I’ll be using as my mantras for 2014 include:

Gravitate towards good

Stay glad

Go big and go home (you can do both)

Get out there

Go far

And I’ll focus on putting the “gee” back in genealogy. I hope that 2014 brings you all that you want and more not just in terms of genealogy but life in general!

© 2014, copyright Thomas MacEntee

A New Year and New Beginnings is a post from: High-Definition Genealogy

New E-Book: Preserving Your Family’s Oral History and Stories

Thomas MacEntee

Genealogy Education

Publishing

I’m pleased to announce my newest e-book just in time for the holidays! If you’ve struggled with how to capture and preserve all those family stories told around the dinner table or at special family events, you’ll want to pick up a copy of Preserving Your Family’s Oral History and Stories. Do you remember how engaging that story was? Was it the story itself or how the storyteller presented the information? Whatever the reasons, the story had an impact and if not preserved on paper or in an audio recording, that story is somehow preserved in your mind.

Fast forward to the 21st century and it seems that “what’s old is new again” with storytelling one of the hot buzz words. The fact is that oral history and storytelling as it involves family and ancestry has been around ever since humans walked the earth. Before writing forms existed and even as recently as the early 20th century with a lack of vital records, family history was preserved as oral history.

Preserving Your Family’s Oral History and Stories provides you with all the information on the latest methods and tools used to capture and preserve those family stories. In addition, once you’ve learned how it easy it is to build a family archive of stories, you’ll want to share them with others using the tips and tricks provided in this book.

Bloggers and reviewers interested in a review copy can contact me at hidefgen@gmail.com for more information.

©2013, copyright Thomas MacEntee

New E-Book: Preserving Your Family’s Oral History and Stories is a post from: High-Definition Genealogy

New Article: Bring Out Your Dead: A Look at Mortality Schedules

Thomas MacEntee

Genealogy Education

My latest article entitled “Bring Out Your Dead: A Look at Mortality Schedules” has been posted at Archives.com. This is one of many articles you’ll find as part of the Learn from Experts series at Archives.com – check it out and you will see some familiar faces among the genealogy blogging crowd! Most of these censuses took place from 1850 to 1900 and tracked deaths as well as causes of death for the year prior to the Census Day. Since many states did not formally track vital records until even the early 20th century, the mortality schedules offer lots of information to fill in the gaps of your geneaogy and family history research.

Visit the Articles page here at High-Definition Genealogy for my other recent and past articles on genealogy.

Disclaimer: this was an assignment for Archives.com in which I was paid to produce a an article on the subject of genealogy webinars. In addition to payment, I also received a complimentary membership to Archives.com. See the Disclosure Statements page for a list of all material connections I have with genealogy vendors.

©2013, copyright Thomas MacEntee

New Article: Bring Out Your Dead: A Look at Mortality Schedules is a post from: High-Definition Genealogy

Millenniata, Inc. – A New Client for High-Definition Genealogy

Thomas MacEntee

Genealogy Industry

Technology

Consulting

I am pleased to announce my affiliation with Millenniata, Inc., the creators of an exciting digital storage product: The M-DISC™, the 1,000 year storage solution. 1,000 Year Disc?
