Römer-Strehl (eds.), Networks in the Hellenistic World According to the Pottery in the Eastern Mediterranean and Beyond (Oxford 2013)

The study of pottery offers the opportunity to illuminate the interrelations and connections within the Hellenistic Eastern Mediterranean since it is by far the most abundant and widely distributed kind of material preserved in the archaeological record. In order to attain a more structured view of the underlying patterns of these interrelations, the paper considers and combines different aspects of network theory and analysis with special regard to their application to antiquity. Emanating from the diversity of networks which are often interwoven, the network theoretical approach towards the study of pottery unveils its potential to track down these interrelations and their operation. Hence, pottery does not merely depict economic networks but illuminates many aspects of social interactions between and within ancient societies. One possibility closely linked to network theory is the study of diffusion processes which often demonstrates the involvement of lower social strata into larger networks and their exposure to it, e.g. in the case of adaption or local imitation of foreign pottery. Thus, the study of pottery in many respects reveals patterns of interrelations of almost every group within ancient societies, leading to a more sophisticated view of human interactions in the past 1 .

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Hellenistic Pottery in a Wider Perspective - On the Use and Misuse of the Application of Network Theory to Material Culture ","attachmentId":40165928,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/5624287/Hellenistic_Pottery_in_a_Wider_Perspective_On_the_Use_and_Misuse_of_the_Application_of_Network_Theory_to_Material_Culture","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Networks in the Hellenistic World: According to the pottery in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond
christiane Römer-Strehl

2013

At some point in Graeco-Roman antiquity, the traditions of Pharaonic Egypt gave way to a differently constituted culture and society; and such a development did not happen overnight. Here I focus on the Ptolemaic era and try to assess whether and how this foreign dynasty's political and economic control affected native culture by a close examination of the ceramic assemblages from three sites: Naukratis, Coptos, and Elephantine. By assessing and comparing the relative amounts of dining, serving, and cooking vessels within a given assemblage, I suggest that it is possible to recognize a movement away from collective gatherings within the Sanctuary of Khnum at Elephantine. Such a change may mark an initial stage in the transformation away from long-lived patterns of Pharaonic society.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Networks in the Hellenistic World: According to the pottery in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond","attachmentId":85420020,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/78337629/Networks_in_the_Hellenistic_World_According_to_the_pottery_in_the_Eastern_Mediterranean_and_beyond","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

(2012) Thoughts on the Archaeological Characterization of Networks. Here I focus on the Ptolemaic era and try to assess whether and how this foreign dynasty’s political and economic control affected native culture by a close examination of the ceramic assemblages from three sites: Naukratis, Coptos, and Elephantine.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"“Something old, something new: Native cultures under Ptolemaic rule,” Networks in the Hellenistic World. This is in part due to the sometimes overwhelming range and quantity of material culture unearthed by excavation , the analysis of which comes to be managed through divisions of labour according to materially defined artefact categories; for example, most projects have a ceramologist, alongside other specialists studying glass, metals, and bone. In the case of materials with large and highly diverse functional classes (such as ceramics), a project might have an even more refined set of specializations-specialists in building materials, amphorae, and tablewares. To some extent, this is a highly practical approach, as materials have particular properties that affect how they are made, used, and valued. Additionally, professional expertise on the part of the archaeologists is time-consuming to develop, and the ever-growing bodies of literature appearing on these material classes requires and encourages a substantial degree of specialization within the discipline. These material-based artefact specializations, however, reflect and promote a system of parochi-alization that privileges objects, materials, and technologies over archaeological and social context. Disconnected from the full assemblage of materials , these artefacts are only subsequently interpreted as collective corpora derived from archaeological contexts. While these methodological specializa-tions are entirely pragmatic, it is vital to stress that such artificial subdivision does not fully represent how professional lives in the ancient world were experienced. The potential limitations of materi-ABSTRACT This article employs network thinking in the study of cross-craft relations in order to evaluate the interconnected nature of local economic activities. In analysing the evidence for sixth-century cross-industry relations at the site of Sagalassos, it becomes possible to reconstruct the structure of the crafting network through the directionality of resources, the work practices that sustained these relations, and the historical trajec-tories of economic development at the local level. It also proposes some implications for the observed patterns, particularly with regard to the lime and ceramic industries.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Elizabeth A.
