Visual census methods can provide rapid estimates of relative abundance, biomass, and length frequency distributions of fish. For this reason, UVC methods have been used to census a wide range of demersal and coastal species that are taken by shallow water fisheries in infralittoral and circalittoral zone. There are several different sub-methods of UVC, however, all of them are based on research of horizontal areas at depths mainly to 15 m, rarely exceeding 20 m. The main reasons for such depth limits during research are diving restrictions and standardized procedures. In this paper a new method of UVC for vertical reefs up to 50 m of depth is described. It is based on transect method were the length of transect is 50 m, while the depth of each transect is 5 m. Two same observers, trained in species identification, are used and HD video recording, for subsequent analysis, is applied. Vertical reef location is modeled using AutoCad. Using 3D system and X, Y and Z axes, vertical reef is shown in perspective view from surface to 50 m of depth. This study assessed three different UVC transect types to monitor high-latitude western Indian Ocean coral reefs; these were slate, photo and video transects. Slate data were analysed with CountN (all fish observed), while footage from reviewable photo and video transects was analysed by both CountN and MaxN (a single frame with the most fish per species), resulting in an assessment of five transect-type analysis technique combinations ; slate, photo-CountN, video-CountN, photo-MaxN and video-MaxN. Video-CountN transects had the highest estimates of richness and abundance, the lowest variability, and the most representative diversity. Video-CountN transects were also the most efficient in that the time taken to analyse footage was comparable to the other combinations considered, the proportion of unidentifiable individuals was low, and it required the lowest sample size to achieve an acceptable statistical power. southeastern Hispaniola was rapidly assessed using a combination of visual survey techniques including transects and roving diver surveys. It was found that when combined, both methods provided a more complete overall species assessment than either method was able to provide in isolation. Being able to conduct rapid species assessments is becoming increasingly more important as a conservation tool. Data on species composition , sighting frequency, and abundance of all fishes were collected using both methods. Abundance was recorded in four logarithmic-based categories (roving diver method) while the number of fishes were counted within 40-m 2 transects (transect method). Both methods were similar in recording the most abundant species, while a greater number of rare species (especially fishery-targeted species) were recorded with the roving diver method. The most abundant groupers were Cephalo-pholis cruentata and C. fulva. The most abundant parrotfishes were Scarus taeniopterus, Sparisoma auro-frenatum, and Scarus iserti. The most conspicuous differences between fishes off southeastern Hispaniola and elsewhere in the tropical western Atlantic were the low abundance and smaller size of harvested species such as groupers, snappers (Fam. Lutjanidae), and grunts (Fam. Haemulidae). With the roving diver method, more time could be spent surveying (instead of placing transect lines), resulting in a greater number of species being recorded. Additionally, well-trained volunteers can adopt the roving diver method as part of their regular diving program. Transect surveys were able to provide information such as length (biomass) and actual density measures that were not recorded in roving diver surveys. Thus, these methods were complementary and should be used in conjunction when conducting rapid assessments of fish assemblages, especially to detect the effects of overfishing.</p><div Nevertheless, methodological considerations of video monitoring techniques are often overlooked, especially in more complex sampling designs, causing inefficient data collection, processing, and interpretation. In this study, we discuss how video transect sampling designs could be assessed and how the inter-observer variability, design errors and sampling variability should be quantified and accounted for. The study took place in the coastal areas of the Galapagos archipelago and consisted of a hierarchical repeated-observations sampling design with multiple observers.
