This time round, the home side were to prove better organised, and with the odd spark of quality, They even managed to provide the first real chance of the game. Adam Lockwood collided with his marker leaving him on the floor nursing a blow to the head, but that had left the Chertsey striker in acres of space and Steve Collis did well to narrow the angle and force the corner. From the resultant corner, Chertsey thumped a header against the crossbar and that should have been enough to dispel any ideas that we were going to see a repeat of last season's walk in the park.
The first half was typical of a first pre-season friendly. Yeovil seemed to be trying a lot of nice ideas out, but they weren't quite coming off. There were a number of short lobs over the top for Demba and Stansfield to run onto, but nothing in particular that they could have capitalised on easily. Chertsey were energetically closing down the Glovers which was providing a good test for the sort of tactics employed by visiting teams playing at Huish Park last season. Yeovil looked stronger and more capable, but it still took until the 25th minute before they turned one of their half-chances into a genuine one - a Lee Johnson belter that came off the crossbar and rebounded out of the penalty area as quickly as it had come in.
A dozen minutes passed and Yeovil managed to repeat the trick, but with a far easier chance being spurned - Lee Johnson's corner found Adam Lockwood unmarked in the area with acres of space and a gaping goal. But Paul Seuke in the Chertsey goal did well to close Lockwood down and the result was the ball coming off the crossbar once again, this time from just eight yards out.
The first half ended as it had begun - with Steve Collis being forced into a good blocking save as he rushed out of his goal to stop a Chertsey striker that had breached Yeovil's back four.
Surprisingly Gary Johnson chose not to make a mass of substitutions as he had done so during the first 45 minutes. Instead the change was more subtle - with Gavin Williams, who had been operating in a right wing position, dropping into a more floating role. It took a whole hour before we saw a change being made, with Adam Stansfield and Tom White making way for Kim Grant and Roy O'Brien.
Yeovil were dominating proceedings now, with Steve Collis a lone spectator, and Kim Grant came within inches of finding the target with a rising shot after a neat pass by Gavin Williams had set him up. But they got their lead finally, with 69 minutes gone when Demba rode a while challenge on the touchline, cut inside into the penalty area and produced a powerful drive that, for once, Chertsey keeper Paul Sauke couldn't deal with, and the result was Michael McINDOE firing through a crowd of players from 10 yards and into the empty net.
Predictably, the goal forced Chertsey to shift up the field a yard or two, and so Yeovil began to find more space. For the goalscorer and goal creator, that was their last taste of the match as they made way for Chris Giles and Olivier Brassart.
It was Brassart who provided the spark to double the lead, as he looped a 25 yard free kick, giving the Chertsey keeper only a chance to knock the ball onto the crossbar and Adam LOCKWOOD ensured that there was no repeat of his first half miss as he buried the ball into the net from six yards for his second goal in as many weeks.
By this time it was one way traffic as Chertsey tired badly, and Yeovil were inches from adding a third when Anthony Tonkin got forward for the first time in the whole game and dropped a nice cross into the danger zone. Chris Giles seemed to make contact with the ball on his shoulder and the false contact was almost enough to fool Seuke in the Chertsey goal, but he did well to spoon the ball out from under his own crossbar, with a melee of Yeovil players charging in to try and mop up any loose ball left disappointed.
A better second half for Yeovil overall though. Even though the overall game was less than spectacular, Chertsey provided far more worthy opponents than they were able to last season, with their keeper solid and strong enough to frustrate the Glovers at times. For Yeovil, a plus point was an equally good performance from Steve Collis, even if he had little to do in the second 45 minutes, whilst Darren Way and Lee Johnson predictably provided a masterful show on how to run a midfield. Up front, Yeovil didn't quite create the number of clear-cut chances they should have, and at the back Yeovil were frequently left chasing down Anthony Tonkin's flank when Chertsey came forward. These are the things that Gary Johnson is likely to look at during future training sessions and friendlies, with the big kick-off still a month away.

Gary's Verdict :

It was a decent work-out, wasn't it? Steve [Johnson - Gary's brother] begged me to come again because he said they would be stronger and that it wouldn't be 8-1 again this year. I knew it would be competitive and so it was a good game to have and we had to work hard for our goals.
We also had to be solid because they've got some decent players as well. In the end, we haven't let a goal in, we've scored two, we've created four or five others and our commitment to the cause was good again. We worked hard and our fitness looked good. I know Chertsey are only part time, so that's not quite a fair match. But we controlled the game in the last 45 minutes despite them making a lot of substitutions that should have kept them fresh.
I played the same team for an hour. I was going to play them for 90 minutes because the idea was that the boys who didn't play 90 minutes would play against Salisbury. But I just felt that some of them were not quite firing on all cylinders and I wanted to make a change to win the game. So I took a few people off and explained that they didn't quite do enough and hopefully that will gee them up a bit and mean that next time they will be even more anxious to do well.
Following up on rebounds is what we've got to do, because half of your goals are scored like that. You've got to make sure that you're the one who picks the ball up. Locky missed a goal down the other end from a rebound but I had a word with him at half time and he wasn't going to miss that second one!
Plucky has got a slight strain at the top of his thigh, and needs a few more days rest, so we decided we didn't need to bring him on the journey. Critts has also got a slight groin strain. If it had been a cup final today, they both would have played, but at this stage they will rest and they will wait until they are fully fit.

<!-- FILE ARCHIVED ON 19:31:53 Aug 11, 2002 AND RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET ARCHIVE ON 11:38:23 Feb 24, 2025.
