In the 1770s the valley was visited by Spanish explorer Pedro Fages, who named the river for the Christian religious sacraments. German-born Swiss pioneer <span id="ref258051"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/John-Sutter" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">John Sutter</a> established the colony of Nueva Helvetia (New Switzerland) in 1839 on the site, a Mexican land grant, and beginning in 1840 built a palisaded trading post known as <span id="ref665699"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Sutters-Fort" class="md-crosslink ">Sutter’s Fort</a> (now a state historic park). His <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="community" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/community" data-type="MW">community</a>, initially populated by fellow Swiss immigrants, prospered as an agricultural centre and as a refuge for American pioneers until the 1849 <span id="ref258052"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/money/gold-rush" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Gold Rush</a>. It was at a sawmill that Sutter was constructing, about 35 miles (55 km) northeast on the American River, near Coloma, that his chief carpenter, James W. Marshall, found the first gold on January 24, 1848. With a population of more than 10,000 in 1854, it was chosen the state capital. In its early decades Sacramento suffered several devastating floods and fires; subsequent measures (levees and masonry construction) <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="alleviated" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alleviated" data-type="MW">alleviated</a> these problems. A hub of river transportation since Sutter started a steamer service, Sacramento was the western terminus of the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Pony-Express" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Pony Express</a> and the first California railroad (1856; the Sacramento Valley Railroad to Folsom). More significantly, four Sacramento merchants—<a href="https://www.britannica.com/money/Charles-Crocker" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Charles Crocker</a>, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/money/Mark-Hopkins-American-businessman" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Mark Hopkins</a>, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/money/Collis-P-Huntington" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Collis P. Huntington</a>, and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Leland-Stanford" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Leland Stanford</a>—financed the construction of the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Central-Pacific-Railroad" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Central Pacific Railroad</a>. Stretching eastward from the city, it completed the country’s first transcontinental rail link when it was joined to the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/money/Union-Pacific-Railroad-Company" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Union Pacific Railroad</a> at Promontory Point, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Utah" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Utah</a>, in May 1869.</p><!--[MOD4]--><span class="marker MOD4 mod-inline"></span> <!--[PREMOD5]--><span class="marker PREMOD5 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">In 1862 the Central Pacific Railroad Central Shops were located in Sacramento, and they were until the 1950s the largest employer in the city, with employment peaking around 5,000 persons during <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/World-War-II" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">World War II</a>. The shops were one of the largest industrial sites west of the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Mississippi-River" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Mississippi River</a>, and, until they closed in 1993, virtually every piece of Central (later Southern) Pacific rolling stock was either built or serviced in these shops. The city began annexing much of the land surrounding it (including the city of North Sacramento in 1964), increasing its area sevenfold between 1940 and 2000; in that same period Sacramento’s population nearly quadrupled.
