#nyc </a></h2><p>Best Buy has announced a wholesale deal in which Best Buy would offer Clearwire’s WiMax service through the retailer’s recently announced Connect service. Best Buy plans to start offering the service in 2011, but didn’t provide a specific date.</p> <p>The company’s 4G service is currently available in 36 cities and is expected to add 24 more by the end of the year. The additional cities include New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Denver and Miami.</p> <p>How Best Buy will offer the Clearwire service was not disclosed, but the latter company last month introduced <a href="http://www.informationweek.com/news/mobility/3G/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=225700522">three 4G modems</a>.</p> <p>Clearwire says its usage plans do not require long-term service contracts. This was an interesting and wide ranging roundtable discussion on AF’s plans to encircle the entire USA with a dark fiber ring with carrier neutral access at any point.</p> <p>As the meeting was held at short notice, regrettably our two associates with the greatest expertise in such matters Frank Coluccio and NYC Community Fiber’s Lou Klepner were not able to be present. Also, it was decided, rather than attempt a coherent edit of 2+ hours of audio, to videotape a follow-up meeting commencing with a more formal presentation, and both Frank and Lou in attendance.</p> <p>This meeting took place on Weds 14 July 2010 at NYU. She analyzes in detail how the original architecture affected innovation—in particular, the development of new applications—and how changing the architecture would affect this kind of innovation.</p> <p>Van Schewick concludes that the original architecture of the Internet fostered application innovation. Current changes that deviate from the Internet’s original design principles reduce the amount and quality of application innovation, limit users’ ability to use the Internet as they see fit, and threaten the Internet’s ability to realize its economic, social, cultural, and political potential. If left to themselves, network providers will continue to change the internal structure of the Internet in ways that are good for them but not necessarily for the rest of us. Methods typically used for measuring Internet data rates, the researchers say, underestimate the speed of the ISP-controlled access network and various other factors – including the location of test servers – can affect data results. The researchers say the government needs better data to establish policy.
