He is best known for his role in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem and his leadership in the spiritual and social restoration of the Jewish community after the Babylonian exile. The Book of Nehemiah, which bears his name, provides a detailed account of his endeavors and leadership.

Historical Context:
Nehemiah lived during the 5th century BC, a time when the Jewish people were under Persian rule. After the Babylonian exile, many Jews had returned to Jerusalem, but the city remained in a state of disrepair, and the community was struggling both physically and spiritually. Nehemiah served as a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I of Persia, a position of significant trust and influence.

Nehemiah's Mission:
Upon hearing about the desolation of Jerusalem, Nehemiah was deeply moved and sought permission from King Artaxerxes to return to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls. The king granted his request, providing him with letters of safe passage and resources for the task. Nehemiah's mission was not only a physical reconstruction but also a spiritual revival of the Jewish people.

Rebuilding the Walls:
Nehemiah's leadership is characterized by his strategic planning and ability to motivate the people. Despite facing opposition from surrounding enemies such as Sanballat and Tobiah, Nehemiah successfully organized the people to work on the wall, often with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other for protection. The wall was completed in just 52 days, a testament to Nehemiah's effective leadership and the people's dedication. As recorded in Nehemiah 6:15-16 , "So the wall was completed in fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of Elul. When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God."

Spiritual and Social Reforms:
Beyond the physical reconstruction, Nehemiah was instrumental in the spiritual renewal of the Jewish community. He worked closely with Ezra the scribe to reestablish the Law of Moses as the foundation of Jewish life. Nehemiah 8 describes the public reading of the Law, which led to a national confession of sins and a renewed commitment to follow God's commandments. Nehemiah 8:8 states, "They read from the Book of the Law of God, clearly and with interpretation, so that the people could understand the reading."

Nehemiah also addressed social injustices, such as the exploitation of the poor by the wealthy. He implemented reforms to ensure that the community adhered to the principles of justice and equity as outlined in the Law. Nehemiah 5:11 records his call for restitution: "Restore to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses, along with the usury you are charging them—the hundredth part of the money, grain, new wine, and oil."

Legacy:
Nehemiah's legacy is one of faithful leadership, dedication to God's purposes, and a commitment to the welfare of his people. His account is a powerful example of how God can use individuals to bring about significant change and restoration. Nehemiah's life and work continue to inspire believers to pursue God's calling with courage and integrity, trusting in His provision and guidance.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
NEHEMIAS
ne-he-mi'-as: Greek form of the Hebrew Nehemiah.

(1) Neemias, one of the leaders of the return under Zerubbabel (1 Esdras 5:8) equals "Nehemiah" of Ezra 2:2 Nehemiah 7:7.

(2) Neemias, Codex Vaticanus Naimias, the prophet Nehemiah (1 Esdras 5:40 where the King James Version margin reads "Nehemias who also is Atharias").
