and the camp<MH4264> of Midian<MH4080> was on the north<MH6828> side<MH6828> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>them by the hill<MH1389> of Moreh<MH4176> in the valley<MH6010>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Gideon<MH1439>, “The people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are with you are too<MH4480> many<MH7227a> for Me to hand<MH5414, 3027> Midian<MH4080> over<MH5414> to them, otherwise<MH6435> Israel<MH3478> would <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>become<MH6286> boastful<MH6286>, saying<MH559>, ‘My own <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>power<MH3027> has saved<MH3467> me.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> therefore come<MH4994>, proclaim<MH7121> in the hearing<MH241> of the people<MH5971a>, saying<MH559>, ‘Whoever<MH4310> is<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> and worried<MH2730a>, is to return<MH7725> and leave<MH6852, 4480> Mount<MH2022> Gilead<MH1568>.’” So twenty-two<MH6242, 8147> thousand<MH505> from the people<MH5971a> returned<MH7725>, but ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> remained<MH7604>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Gideon<MH1439>, “The people<MH5971a> are still<MH5750> too many<MH7227a>; bring<MH3381> them down<MH3381> to the water<MH4325> and I will test<MH6884> them for you there<MH8033>. So it shall be that he of whom<MH834> I say<MH559> to you, ‘This<MH2088> one<MH2088> shall go<MH1980> with you,’ he shall go<MH1980> with you; but everyone<MH3605> of whom<MH834> I say<MH559> to you, ‘This<MH2088> one<MH2088> shall not go<MH1980> with you,’ he shall not go<MH1980>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So he brought<MH3381> the people<MH5971a> down<MH3381> to the water<MH4325>. Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Gideon<MH1439>, “You shall put<MH3322> everyone<MH3605> who<MH834> laps<MH3952> the water<MH4325> with his tongue<MH3956> as a dog<MH3611> laps<MH3952> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>in one<MH905> group<MH905>, and everyone<MH3605> who<MH834> kneels<MH1290, 3766> down<MH3766> to drink<MH8354> <i>in another.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now the number<MH4557> of those who lapped<MH3952>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>putting their hand<MH3027> to their mouth<MH6310>, was three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376>; but all<MH3605> the rest<MH3499a> of the people<MH5971a> kneeled<MH3766, 1290> down<MH3766> to drink<MH8354> water<MH4325>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Gideon<MH1439>, “I will save<MH3467> you with the three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> who lapped<MH3952>, and will hand<MH5414, 3027> the Midianites<MH4080> over<MH5414> to you; so have all<MH3605> the <i>other</i> people<MH5971a> go<MH1980>, each<MH376> man<MH376> to his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>home<MH4725>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>the three hundred men took<MH3947> the people’s<MH5971a> provisions<MH6720> and their trumpets<MH7782> in their hands<MH3027>. And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Gideon dismissed<MH7971> all<MH3605> the <i>other</i> men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>, each<MH376> to his tent<MH168>, but retained<MH2388> the three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376>; and the camp<MH4264> of Midian<MH4080> was below<MH4480, 8478> him in the valley<MH6010>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now on the same<MH1931> night<MH3915> it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> that the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to him, “Arise<MH6965>, go<MH3381> down<MH3381> against the camp<MH4264>, for I have handed<MH5414, 3027> it over<MH5414> to you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you are afraid<MH3372a> to go<MH3381> down<MH3381>, go<MH3381> with Purah<MH6513> your servant<MH5288> down<MH3381> to the camp<MH4264>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>so that you will hear<MH8085> what<MH4100> they say<MH1696>; and afterward<MH310> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>you will have<MH2388> the courage<MH3027, 2388> to go<MH3381> down<MH3381> against the camp<MH4264>.” So he went<MH3381> down<MH3381> with Purah<MH6513> his servant<MH5288> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>outposts<MH7097a> of the army<MH2571> that was in the camp<MH4264>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now the Midianites<MH4080>, the Amalekites<MH6002>, and all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>people<MH1121> of the east<MH6924a> were lying<MH5307> in the valley<MH6010> as numerous<MH7230> as locusts<MH697>; and their camels<MH1581> were without<MH369> number<MH4557>, as numerous<MH7230> as the sand<MH2344> on the seashore<MH3220, 8193>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>When Gideon<MH1439> came<MH935>, behold<MH2009>, a man<MH376> was relating<MH5608> a dream<MH2472> to his friend<MH7453>. And he said<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>had<MH2492b> a dream<MH2472>; <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>a loaf<MH6742> of barley<MH8184> bread<MH3899> was tumbling<MH2015> into the camp<MH4264> of Midian<MH4080>, and it came<MH935> to the tent<MH168> and struck<MH5221> it so that it fell<MH5307>, and turned<MH2015> it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>upside<MH4605> down<MH4605> so that the tent<MH168> collapsed<MH5307>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And his friend<MH7453> replied<MH6030>, “This<MH2088> is nothing<MH369> other<MH1115, 518> than<MH1115, 518> the sword<MH2719> of Gideon<MH1439> the son<MH1121> of Joash<MH3060>, a man<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>; God<MH430> has handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to him Midian<MH4080> and all<MH3605> the camp<MH4264>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>When Gideon<MH1439> heard<MH8085> the account<MH4557> of the dream<MH2472> and its interpretation<MH7667>, he bowed<MH2331c> in<MH2331c> worship<MH2331c>. Then he returned<MH7725> to the camp<MH4264> of Israel<MH3478> and said<MH559>, “Arise<MH6965>, for the LORD<MH3068> has handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to you the camp<MH4264> of Midian<MH4080>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And he divided<MH2673> the three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> into three<MH7969> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>units<MH7218>, and he put<MH5414> trumpets<MH7782> and empty<MH7386> pitchers<MH3537> into the hands<MH3027> of all<MH3605> of them, with torches<MH3940> inside<MH8432> the pitchers<MH3537>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to them, “Look<MH7200> at me and do<MH6213a> likewise<MH3651>. And behold<MH2009>, when I come<MH935> to the outskirts<MH7097a> of the camp<MH4264>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>do<MH6213a> as I do<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>When I and all<MH3605> who<MH834> are with me blow<MH8628> the trumpet<MH7782>, then you also<MH1571> blow<MH8628> the trumpets<MH7782> around<MH5439> the entire<MH3605> camp<MH4264> and say<MH559>, ‘For the LORD<MH3068> and for Gideon<MH1439>!’” <p class="hdg">Confusion of the Enemy</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So Gideon<MH1439> and the hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> who<MH834> were with him came<MH935> to the outskirts<MH7097a> of the camp<MH4264> at the beginning<MH7218> of the middle<MH8484> night<MH821> watch<MH821>, when<MH389> they had just<MH389> posted<MH6965> the watch<MH8104>; and they blew<MH8628> the trumpets<MH7782> and smashed<MH5310a> the pitchers<MH3537> that were in their hands<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>When the three<MH7969> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>units<MH7218> blew<MH8628> the trumpets<MH7782> and broke<MH7665> the pitchers<MH3537>, they held<MH2388> the torches<MH3940> in their left<MH8040> hands<MH3027> and the trumpets<MH7782> in their right<MH3225> hands<MH3027> for blowing<MH8628>, and shouted<MH7121>, “A sword<MH2719> for the LORD<MH3068> and for Gideon<MH1439>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And each<MH376> stood<MH5975> in<MH8478> his place<MH8478> around<MH5439> the camp<MH4264>; and all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>army<MH4264> ran<MH7323>, crying<MH7321> out<MH7321> as they fled<MH5127>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And when they blew<MH8628> the three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> trumpets<MH7782>, the LORD<MH3068> set<MH7760> the sword<MH2719> of one<MH376> against another<MH7453> even throughout<MH3605> the entire<MH3605> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>army<MH4264>; and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>army<MH4264> fled<MH5127> as far<MH5704> as Beth-shittah<MH1029> toward Zererah<MH6888>, as far<MH5704> as the edge<MH8193> of Abel-meholah<MH65>, by Tabbath<MH2888>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> were summoned<MH6817> from Naphtali<MH5321>, Asher<MH836>, and all<MH3605> Manasseh<MH4519>, and they pursued<MH7291, 310> Midian<MH4080>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Gideon<MH1439> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> throughout<MH3605> the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Ephraim<MH669>, saying<MH559>, “Come<MH3381> down<MH3381> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>against<MH7122> Midian<MH4080> and take<MH3920> control<MH3920> of the waters<MH4325> ahead of them, as far<MH5704> as Beth-barah<MH1012> and the Jordan<MH3383>.” So all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Ephraim<MH669> were summoned<MH6817>, and they took<MH3920> control<MH3920> of the waters<MH4325> as far<MH5704> as Beth-barah<MH1012> and the Jordan<MH3383>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/7-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And they captured<MH3920> the two<MH8147> leaders<MH8269> of Midian<MH4080>, Oreb<MH6159> and Zeeb<MH2062>, and they killed<MH2026> Oreb<MH6159> at the rock<MH6697> of Oreb<MH6159>, and they killed<MH2026> Zeeb<MH2062> at the wine<MH3342> press<MH3342> of Zeeb<MH2062>, while they pursued<MH7291> Midian<MH4080>;
