Pleyben de Gouézec et Lothey, le pédoncule de Kerluhan (en Châteaulin) étant le plus accentué, mais celui de Tréziguidy, qui sépare Pleyben de Lothey l'est également. Pleyben bénéficie d'un cadre vallonné (entre 176 m et 14 m d'altitude, le bourg se trouvant vers 115 mètres) et verdoyant ; la commune fait partie du <a href="/w/index.php?title=Parc_naturel_r%C3%A9gional_d%27Armorique&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Parc naturel régional d'Armorique (la pagina existís pas)">Parc naturel régional d'Armorique</a>. La densité de population est de 47,5 habitants par km² en 2006. </p><p>La canalisation de l'Aulne dans le cadre de la création du <a href="/w/index.php?title=Canal_de_Nantes_%C3%A0_Brest&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Canal de Nantes à Brest (la pagina existís pas)">canal de Nantes à Brest</a> dans le premier tiers du sègle <span title="Nombre escrit en chifras romanas" style="font-variant:small-caps;">xix</span> a entraîné la construction d'<a href="/w/index.php?title=%C3%89cluse&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Écluse (la pagina existís pas)">écluses</a>: d'amont vers l'aval, les écluses du Vuzid et de Saint-Algon en amont de Pont-Coblant et de Stéreon, de Coat Pont, de Tréziguidy, du Guilliec, de Penn-ar-Pont en aval. Un port fluvial fut aménagé à Pont-Coblant, hameau développé sur les deux rives de l'Aulne, à cheval sur les communes de Pleyben et Gouézec ; son trafic fut important en raison de la proximité de carrières d'ardoises désormais fermées.
