VCU's best finish in the NCAA Tournament came in 2004, when the Rams reached the quarterfinals of the tournament, where they fell to UC Santa Barbara. </p><p>The first 20 years of the men's soccer program were otherwise lackluster, as the team failed to reach the NCAA Tournament, nor win any conference tournaments. The first five seasons were led under <a href="/w/index.php?title=Ben_Satterfield&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Ben Satterfield (page does not exist)">Ben Satterfield</a>, who failed to have a winning season at the helm of the team. Giffard has coached the team since 2010. </p><p>The team's most successful run in the <a href="/wiki/NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Soccer_Championship" class="mw-redirect" title="NCAA Men's Division I Soccer Championship">College Cup</a>, the men's NCAA Division I Soccer Tournament, came in <a href="/wiki/2004_Division_I_Men%27s_College_Cup" class="mw-redirect" title="2004 Division I Men's College Cup">2004</a>, where the Rams entered the tournament as ranked 16th in the nation, earning a bye to the second round proper. The team, formed in 1994, has always competed amongst the top teams in their division. The team is coached by Michael Fisher, assistant coach John H Hussar and goalie coach Bobby Dillon. Fisher is a VCU graduate that participated in the 2008-2009 playoff run that clinched the BRHC championship. Hussar is a graduate that played four seasons for VCU. VCU won the ECCHA championship in 2018–2019. Starting in fall 2019, John H Hussar will take over as head coach. The team has a longstanding rivalry with the University of Richmond ice hockey team which always proves to be very entertaining and draws a sizable crowd. The team plays their home games at the Richmond Ice Zone, about fifteen minutes south of Richmond. While not the most well-known sports team at VCU, the ice hockey team continues to grow each year, adding more and more recruits with diverse backgrounds. The club embraces players with and without experience in the sport, often giving new players the opportunity to excel at the club level alongside skilled ones. Rams Lacrosse competes as a Division II team in the Tidewater Division of the NCLL, against <a href="/wiki/Christopher_Newport" title="Christopher Newport">Christopher Newport</a>, <a href="/wiki/College_of_William_%26_Mary" title="College of William & Mary">William & Mary</a>, and cross-town rival <a href="/wiki/University_of_Richmond" title="University of Richmond">University of Richmond</a>. Club highlights include claiming first place in 2005 at the Old Dominion Shootout in Lynchburg over Liberty University, and their best-ever finish in 2007. The team took fourth at the East Coast Championship tournament.
