Pierangelo was joined today by Comorian newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs Mbae Mohamed, outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs Dhoihir Dhoulkamal, Minister of Interior Fakridine Mahamoud and newly appointed Secretary General of the Government Nour El Fath Azali to celebrate the 248th anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence. The ceremony was an occasion to reaffirm the expanding bilateral relationship between the United States and the Union of Comoros.</p> <p>The United States will soon launch a USD 5 million USAID programming focused on renewable energy, food security, and workforce development, and will provide an additional USD1million in funding to support civic education and improved financial governance.</p> <p>This week, the United States and Comoros governments will sign a Memorandum of Understanding for a USD 3.8 million program to help Comoros improve its search and rescue capabilities, protect its borders from crime and trafficking, and to counter illegal fishing in Comorian waters. This partnership includes the donation of Unmanned Aerial Systems, or drones, as well as related training and maintenance to Comoros’ Coast Guard.</p> <p>According to Ambassador Pierangelo, “none of this would have been possible without Comoros’ strong progress on addressing trafficking in persons concerns. At the same time, all of this is possible because we have forged a bilateral relationship based on trust, respect, and honesty.”</p> <p>Both the recent inauguration of the renovated American Corner to allow young people to study English, explore educational opportunities, and connect with the world, and the visit in May 2023 of U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Verma, are also a testament to this expanding relationship.</p> <p>The United States continues to stand with the people of the Comoros to expand people-to-people ties, diplomatic engagement, security cooperation, and development cooperation.
