and you shall give<MH5414> to the Levites<MH3881> pasture<MH4054> lands<MH4054> around<MH5439> the cities<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>The cities<MH5892b> shall be theirs<MH1992a> to live<MH3427> in; and their pasture<MH4054> lands<MH4054> shall be for their cattle<MH929> and for their equipment<MH7399> and for all<MH3605> their <i>other</i> animals<MH2421b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>“The pasture<MH4054> lands<MH4054> of the cities<MH5892b> which<MH834> you are to give<MH5414> to the Levites<MH3881> <i>shall extend</i> from the wall<MH7023> of the city<MH5892b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>outward<MH2351> a thousand<MH505> cubits<MH520> around<MH5439>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>You shall also measure<MH4058> outside<MH4480, 2351> the city<MH5892b> on the east<MH6924b> side<MH6285> two thousand<MH505> cubits<MH520>, on the south<MH5045> side<MH6285> two thousand<MH505> cubits<MH520>, on the west<MH3220> side<MH6285> two thousand<MH505> cubits<MH520>, and on the north<MH6828> side<MH6285> two thousand<MH505> cubits<MH520>, with the city<MH5892b> in the center<MH8432>. This<MH2088> shall become<MH1961> theirs<MH1992a> as pasture<MH4054> lands<MH4054> for the cities<MH5892b>. <p class="hdg">Cities of Refuge</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>The cities<MH5892b> which<MH834> you shall give<MH5414> to the Levites<MH3881> <i>shall be</i> the six<MH8337a> cities<MH5892b> of refuge<MH4733>, which<MH834> you shall provide<MH5414> for the one who commits<MH7523> manslaughter<MH7523> to flee<MH5127> to; and in<MH5921> addition<MH5921> to<MH5921> them you shall give<MH5414> forty-two<MH705, 8147> cities<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The total<MH3605> <i>number</i> of the cities<MH5892b> which<MH834> you are to give<MH5414> to the Levites<MH3881> <i>shall be</i> forty-eight<MH705, 8083> cities<MH5892b>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>together with their pasture<MH4054> lands<MH4054>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>As for the cities<MH5892b> which<MH834> you shall give<MH5414> <i>them</i> from the possession<MH272> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, you shall take<MH7235a> more<MH7235a> from the larger<MH7227a>, and you shall take<MH4591> fewer<MH4591> from the smaller<MH4592>; each<MH376> shall give<MH5414> some<MH4480> of his cities<MH5892b> to the Levites<MH3881> in proportion<MH6310> to his inheritance<MH5159> which<MH834> he possesses<MH5157>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> to Moses<MH4872>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“Speak<MH1696> to the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> and say<MH559> to them, ‘When<MH3588> you cross<MH5674a> the Jordan<MH3383> into the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>then you shall select<MH7136a> for yourselves cities<MH5892b> to be your cities<MH5892b> of refuge<MH4733>, so that the one who commits<MH7523> manslaughter<MH7523> <i>by</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>killing<MH5221> a person<MH5315> unintentionally<MH7684> may flee<MH5127> there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The cities<MH5892b> shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>serve you as a refuge<MH4733> from the avenger<MH1350>, so that the one who commits<MH7523> manslaughter<MH7523> does not die<MH4191> until<MH5704> he stands<MH5975> before<MH6440> the congregation<MH5712> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>trial<MH4941>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So the cities<MH5892b> which<MH834> you are to provide<MH5414> shall be six<MH8337a> cities<MH5892b> of refuge<MH4733> for you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>You shall provide<MH5414> three<MH7969> cities<MH5892b> across<MH4480, 5676> the Jordan<MH3383>, and three<MH7969> cities<MH5892b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>in the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>; they are to be cities<MH5892b> of refuge<MH4733>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>These<MH428> six<MH8337a> cities<MH5892b> shall be a refuge<MH4733> for the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, for the stranger<MH1616>, and for the foreign<MH8453> resident<MH8453> among<MH8432> them; so that anyone<MH3605> who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>kills<MH5221> a person<MH5315> unintentionally<MH7684> may flee<MH5127> there<MH8033>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>‘But if<MH518> he struck<MH5221> him with an iron<MH1270> object<MH3627>, so that he died<MH4191>, he is a murderer<MH7523>; the murderer<MH7523> must<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And if<MH518> he struck<MH5221> him with a stone<MH68> in the hand<MH3027>, by which<MH834> he would die<MH4191>, and <i>as a result</i> he did die<MH4191>, he is a murderer<MH7523>; the murderer<MH7523> must<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Or<MH176> <i>if</i> he struck<MH5221> him with a wooden<MH6086> object<MH3627> in the hand<MH3027>, by which<MH834> he would die<MH4191>, and <i>as a result</i> he did die<MH4191>, he is a murderer<MH7523>; the murderer<MH7523> must<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The blood<MH1818> avenger<MH1350> himself<MH1931> shall put<MH4191> the murderer<MH7523> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>; he himself shall put<MH4191> him to<MH4191> death<MH4191> when he meets<MH6293> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now if<MH518> he pushed<MH1920> him in hatred<MH8135>, or<MH176> he threw<MH7993> <i>something</i> at him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>with malicious<MH6660> intent<MH6660>, and <i>as a result</i> he died<MH4191>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>or<MH176> <i>if</i> he struck<MH5221> him with his hand<MH3027> with hostility<MH342>, and <i>as a result</i> he died<MH4191>, the one who struck<MH5221> him must<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>; he is a murderer<MH7523>. The blood<MH1818> avenger<MH1350> shall put<MH4191> the murderer<MH7523> to<MH4191> death<MH4191> when he meets<MH6293> him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>‘But if<MH518> he pushed<MH1920> him suddenly<MH6621>, without<MH3808> hostility<MH342>, or<MH176> threw<MH7993> any<MH3605> object<MH3627> at him without<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>malicious<MH6660> intent<MH6660>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>or<MH176> had any<MH3605> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>deadly<MH834, 4191> stone<MH68>, and without<MH3808> looking<MH7200> he dropped<MH5307> <i>it</i> on him so that he died<MH4191>, while he was not his enemy<MH340> nor<MH3808> was he seeking<MH1245> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>to harm<MH7463a> him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>then the congregation<MH5712> shall judge<MH8199> between<MH996> the one who fatally<MH5221> struck<MH5221> <i>the victim</i> and the blood<MH1818> avenger<MH1350> in<MH5921> accordance<MH5921> with<MH5921> these<MH428> ordinances<MH4941>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And the congregation<MH5712> shall save<MH5337> the one who committed<MH7523> manslaughter<MH7523> from the hand<MH3027> of the blood<MH1818> avenger<MH1350>, and the congregation<MH5712> shall return<MH7725> him to his city<MH5892b> of refuge<MH4733> to which<MH834> he fled<MH5127>; and he shall live<MH3427> in it until<MH5704> the death<MH4194> of the high<MH1419> priest<MH3548> who<MH834> was anointed<MH4886> with the holy<MH6944> oil<MH8081>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But if<MH518> at<MH3318> any<MH3318> time<MH3318> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>he goes<MH3318> beyond<MH3318> the border<MH1366> of his city<MH5892b> of refuge<MH4733> to which<MH834> he flees<MH5127>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>and the blood<MH1818> avenger<MH1350> finds<MH4672> him outside<MH4480, 2351> the border<MH1366> of his city<MH5892b> of refuge<MH4733>, and the blood<MH1818> avenger<MH1350> kills<MH7523> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>him, he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>will not be guilty of bloodshed<MH1818>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/35-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>because<MH3588> he should have remained<MH3427> in his city<MH5892b> of refuge<MH4733> until<MH5704> the death<MH4194> of the high<MH1419> priest<MH3548>.
