A cognitive process (and thus abduction) is described by the manipulation of internal semiotic representations of external world. This view assumes a discrete set of representations fixed in discrete time jumps and, because of its functionalist character, cannot render the embodied dimension of cognition and the issue of anticipation and causation of a new hypothesis adequately. particularly when combined with the principle philosophy did retain : Aristotle 's thesis that nothing moves itself. Aristotle had insisted that formal deduction from universal premises is the logic of reasoning proper to science (episfeme). Because human behavior is temporally and contextually embedded, on the other hand, it is Aristotle 's principle that nothing moves or changes itself ; intentions , volitions , and other alleged causes of action are supposed to be other than the behavior they cause. In addition , by subscribing to a Newtonian understanding of efficient cause as well , these theories have also uncritically assumed that intentions , volitions , or agents cause action in the collisionlike way that cue sticks cause cue balls to move. As a result of these two unexamined presuppositions , causal theories have been plagued by characteristic and recurrent objections. Most of the action theory literature of the past four decades has consisted of repeated attempts to mitigate or circumvent these objections , not recognizing that they will persist until action theory abandons this mechanistic view of cause. Is the universe winding down or ratcheting up? Fortunately, there is a way out of this impasse. Over the last few decades a new branch of thermodynamics has been developed, variously called the theory of complex adaptive systems , complexity theory, and similar names , that deals with systems far from equilibrium and open in the sense that they exchange matter and energy with their environment. Pioneered by Ilya Prigogine , is necessary for the process itself. Contrary to Aristotle , this circular type of causality is a form of self-cause. Second , when parts interact to produce wholes, and the resulting distributed wholes in turn affect the behavior of their parts, interlevel causality is at work. Interactions among certain dynamical process es can create a systems-level organization with new properties that are not the simple sum of the components that constitute the higher level. In turn, the overall dynamics of the emergent distributed among the individual passages. In turn , the meaning of the story 's individual passages is derived from the meaning of the entire text in which those passages are embedded. This continual , interpretive " tacking " from parts to whole and back to parts reproduces the way dynamical systems self-organize out of the interrelationships among the parts-and then loop back to constrain those parts. The similarity in the dynamics of self-The flaws of contemporary philosophical action theory cannot be understood , therefore , in isolation from the larger context of the history of Western philosophy. In turn , the failure of that history to formulate a satisfactory account of cause and explanation is better understood by viewing those two concepts through the prism of action theory. Doing so the emphasis that dynamical systems theory places on contextual embeddedness can resolve many of the problems with which action theory has traditionally grappled. In part III I leave the metaphysics of action and turn to the subject of explanation. Chapter 14 sketch es the narrative and historical model of explaining action mentioned earlier. A static object is an object whose properties do not change over time. Given such an idealization, the notion of 'static' lies at an extreme end of the spectrum of temporal relations between objects and properties. Indeed, modern physics tells us that no objects are truly static. Nevertheless, many of our physical, computational, and metaphysical theories turn a blind eye to the role of time, often for practical reasons. So, perhaps it is not surprising that in the philosophy of mind -where physical, computational, and metaphysical theories meet -there has been a consistent tendancy to articulate theories that consider function and time independently. As a result, contemporary theories in cognitive science consider time unsystematically (see the next section for specific examples). In this chapter, I suggest that the problem with this 'ad hocery' is that the systems we are trying to characterize are real-time systems, whose real-time performance demands principled explanation (a point on which many of these same contemporary theorists agree). After a discussion of the importance and roots of dynamics in cognitive theorizing, I describe the role of time in each of the three main approaches to cognitive science: symbolicism, connectionism and dynamicism. Subsequently, I outline a recently proposed method, the Neural Engineering Framework (NEF), that, unlike past approaches, permits a principled integration of dynamics into biologically realistic models of high-level cognition.
