The process of extracting iron from the earth involved mining and refining, which required significant labor and skill. This phrase highlights human ingenuity and the ability to harness natural resources. Biblically, iron is mentioned in various contexts, such as in the construction of tools and weapons (<a href="/1_samuel/13-19.htm">1 Samuel 13:19-22</a>). The use of iron can symbolize strength and resilience, as seen in <a href="/daniel/2-40.htm">Daniel 2:40</a>, where the fourth kingdom is described as strong as iron. The extraction of iron from the earth also reflects the broader theme of human dominion over creation, as granted in <a href="/genesis/1-28.htm">Genesis 1:28</a>.<p><b>and copper is smelted from ore</b><br>Copper was one of the first metals used by humans, and its smelting process involves heating and melting to extract the metal from its ore. This process signifies human advancement in technology and metallurgy. In biblical times, copper was used for various purposes, including the construction of the Tabernacle and Temple (<a href="/exodus/27-2.htm">Exodus 27:2-3</a>, <a href="/1_kings/7-13.htm">1 Kings 7:13-14</a>). The refining of copper can be seen as a metaphor for purification and testing, akin to the refining of faith (<a href="/zechariah/13-9.htm">Zechariah 13:9</a>, <a href="/malachi/3-3.htm">Malachi 3:3</a>). The mention of copper in this verse underscores the theme of human effort in uncovering and utilizing the earth's resources, reflecting the wisdom and knowledge that God has endowed to humanity.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/j/job.htm">Job</a></b><br>The central figure in the Book of Job, a man of great faith and patience who undergoes severe trials and suffering. Iron was found in the hills of Palestine (<a href="/deuteronomy/8-9.htm">Deuteronomy 8:9</a>), in the trans-Jordanic region (Josephus, 'Bell. Jud,' 4:8. &sect; 2), in the sandstone of the Lebanon ('Hist. of Phoenicia,' p. 47), and in Egypt ('Hist. of Ancient Egypt,' vol. 1. p. 93), probably also in many other places. It is scarcely ever found except in the shape of iron ore, and so has to be "taken out of the earth." And brass is molten out of the stone. By "brass" we must understand copper, since the amalgam brass is never found in a natural state. Copper was yielded abundantly in very early times by the mines which the Egyptians worked in the Sinaitic peninsula ('Hist. of Ancient Egypt,' vol. 1. pp. 93, 94). It was also obtainable from Palestine (<a href="/deuteronomy/8-9.htm">Deuteronomy 8:9</a>), Cyprus ('Hist. of Phoenicia,' p. 311), and Armenia (<a href="/ezekiel/27-13.htm">Ezekiel 27:13</a>). Sometimes it is found pure, but generally in the shape of copper ore, which has to be "molten" for the pure metal to run off. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/job/28-2.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Iron</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1489;&#1468;&#1463;&#1453;&#1512;&#1456;&#1494;&#1462;&#1500;</span> <span class="translit">(bar&#183;zel)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1270.htm">Strong's 1270: </a> </span><span class="str2">Iron, an iron implement</span><br /><br /><span class="word">is taken</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1467;&#1511;&#1468;&#1464;&#1425;&#1495;</span> <span class="translit">(yuq&#183;q&#257;&#7717;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - QalPass - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3947.htm">Strong's 3947: </a> </span><span class="str2">To take</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from the earth,</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1502;&#1461;&#1506;&#1464;&#1508;&#1464;&#1443;&#1512;</span> <span class="translit">(m&#234;&#183;&#8216;&#257;&#183;p&#772;&#257;r)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-m &#124; Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6083.htm">Strong's 6083: </a> </span><span class="str2">Dust, clay, earth, mud</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and copper</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1504;&#1456;&#1495;&#1493;&#1468;&#1513;&#1473;&#1464;&#1469;&#1492;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(n&#601;&#183;&#7717;&#363;&#183;&#353;&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5154.htm">Strong's 5154: </a> </span><span class="str2">Copper, bronze</span><br /><br /><span class="word">is smelted</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1464;&#1510;&#1445;&#1493;&#1468;&#1511;</span> <span class="translit">(y&#257;&#183;&#7779;&#363;q)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6694.htm">Strong's 6694: </a> </span><span class="str2">To pour out, smelt, utter</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from ore.</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1456;&#1437;&#1488;&#1462;&#1431;&#1489;&#1462;&#1503;</span> <span class="translit">(w&#601;&#183;&#8217;e&#183;&#7687;en)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw &#124; Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_68.htm">Strong's 68: </a> </span><span class="str2">A stone</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/job/28-2.htm">Job 28:2 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/job/28-2.htm">OT Poetry: Job 28:2 Iron is taken out of the earth (Jb) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/job/28-1.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Job 28:1"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Job 28:1" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/job/28-3.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Job 28:3"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Job 28:3" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
