The objective is to evoke a terrestrial landscape in miniature, rather than a colourful garden. This style draws particularly from the <a href="/wiki/Japanese_art#Aesthetic_concepts" title="Japanese art">Japanese aesthetic concepts</a> of <i><a href="/wiki/Wabi-sabi" title="Wabi-sabi">Wabi-sabi</a></i><span style="font-weight: normal"> (<span title="Japanese-language text"><span lang="ja">侘寂</span></span>)</span>, which focuses on <a href="/wiki/Mono_no_aware" title="Mono no aware">transience</a> and minimalism as sources of beauty.
