He also crushed<MH3807> to<MH3807> pieces<MH3807> the bronze<MH5178> serpent<MH5175> that Moses<MH4872> had made<MH6213a>, for until<MH5704> those<MH1992a> days<MH3117> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> had been burning<MH6999> incense<MH6999> to it; and it was called<MH7121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Nehushtan<MH5180>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>He trusted<MH982> in the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>; and after<MH310> him there was no<MH3808> one like<MH3644> him among all<MH3605> the kings<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>, nor<MH3808> <i>among those</i> who<MH834> came<MH1961> before<MH6440> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>For he clung<MH1692> to the LORD<MH3068>; he did not desist<MH5493> from following<MH310> Him, but kept<MH8104> His commandments<MH4687>, which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had commanded<MH6680> Moses<MH4872>. <p class="hdg">Hezekiah Victorious</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> was with him; wherever<MH3605, 834> he went<MH3318> he was<MH7919a> successful<MH7919a>. And he revolted<MH4775> against the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> and did not serve<MH5647> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>defeated<MH5221> the Philistines<MH6430> as far<MH5704> as Gaza<MH5804a> and its territory<MH1366>, from watchtower<MH5341, 4026> to fortified<MH4013> city<MH5892b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now in the fourth<MH7243> year<MH8141> of King<MH4428> Hezekiah<MH2396>, which<MH1931> was the seventh<MH7637> year<MH8141> of Hoshea<MH1954> son<MH1121> of Elah<MH425> king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>, Shalmaneser<MH8022> king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> marched<MH5927> against<MH5921> Samaria<MH8111> and besieged<MH6696a, 5921> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And at the end<MH7097a> of three<MH7969> years<MH8141> they captured<MH3920> it; in the sixth<MH8337a> year<MH8141> of Hezekiah<MH2396>, which<MH1931> was the ninth<MH8672> year<MH8141> of Hoshea<MH1954> king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>, Samaria<MH8111> was captured<MH3920>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> led<MH1540> Israel<MH3478> into<MH1540> exile<MH1540> to Assyria<MH804b>, and put<MH5148> them in Halah<MH2477> and on the Habor<MH2249>, the river<MH5104> of Gozan<MH1470>, and in the cities<MH5892b> of the Medes<MH4074>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><i>This happened</i> because<MH5921, 834> they did not obey<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430>, but violated<MH5674a> His covenant<MH1285>, all<MH3605> that Moses<MH4872> the servant<MH5650> of the LORD<MH3068> had commanded<MH6680>; they would neither<MH3808> listen<MH8085> nor<MH3808> do<MH6213a> <i>it.</i> <p class="hdg">Invasion of Judah</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now in the fourteenth<MH702, 6240> year<MH8141> of King<MH4428> Hezekiah<MH2396>, Sennacherib<MH5576> king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> marched<MH5927> against<MH5921> all<MH3605> the fortified<MH1219> cities<MH5892b> of Judah<MH3063> and seized<MH8610> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then Hezekiah<MH2396> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> sent<MH7971> <i>messengers</i> to the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> at Lachish<MH3923>, saying<MH559>, “I have done<MH2398> wrong<MH2398>. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Withdraw<MH7725> from me; whatever<MH834> you impose<MH5414> on me I will endure<MH5375>.” So the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> imposed<MH7760> on Hezekiah<MH2396> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> <i>the payment of</i> three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>talents<MH3603> of silver<MH3701> and thirty<MH7970> talents<MH3603> of gold<MH2091>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Hezekiah<MH2396> then gave<MH5414> <i>him</i> all<MH3605> the silver<MH3701> that was found<MH4672> in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, and in the treasuries<MH214> of the king’s<MH4428> house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>At that time<MH6256> Hezekiah<MH2396> cut<MH7112> off<MH7112> <i>the gold from</i> the doors<MH1817> of the temple<MH1964> of the LORD<MH3068>, and <i>from</i> the doorposts<MH539>, which<MH834> Hezekiah<MH2396> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> had overlaid<MH6823>, and he gave<MH5414> it to the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> sent<MH7971> Tartan<MH8661>, Rab-saris<MH7249>, and Rabshakeh<MH7262> from Lachish<MH3923> to King<MH4428> Hezekiah<MH2396> with a large<MH3515> army<MH2428> to Jerusalem<MH3389>. So they went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and came<MH935> to Jerusalem<MH3389>. And when they went<MH5927> up<MH5927>, they came<MH935> and stood<MH5975> by the conduit<MH8585a> of the upper<MH5945a> pool<MH1295>, which<MH834> is on the road<MH4546> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>fuller’s<MH3526> field<MH7704>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then they called<MH7121> to the king<MH4428>, and Eliakim<MH471> the son<MH1121> of Hilkiah<MH2518>, who<MH834> was in<MH5921> charge<MH5921> of<MH5921> the household<MH1004>, Shebnah<MH7644> the scribe<MH5613b>, and Joah<MH3098> the son<MH1121> of Asaph<MH623> the secretary<MH4206c>, went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And Rabshakeh<MH7262> said<MH559> to them, “Say<MH559> now<MH4994> to Hezekiah<MH2396>, ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the great<MH1419> king<MH4428>, the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> says<MH559>: “What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> confidence<MH986> that you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>have<MH982>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>You say<MH559>—<i>but they are</i> only<MH389> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>empty<MH8193> words<MH1697>—‘<i>I have</i> a plan<MH6098> and strength<MH1369> for the war<MH4421>.’ Now<MH6258> on whom<MH4310> have you relied<MH982>, that you have revolted<MH4775> against me? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> behold<MH2009>, you have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>relied<MH982> on the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>support<MH4938b> of this<MH2088> broken<MH7533> reed<MH7070>, on Egypt<MH4714>; on which<MH834> if a man<MH376> leans<MH5564>, it will go<MH935> into his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>hand<MH3709> and pierce<MH5344a> it. That<MH3651> is<MH3651> how<MH3651> Pharaoh<MH6547> king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> is to all<MH3605> who rely<MH982> on him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>However, if<MH3588> you say<MH559> to me, ‘We have trusted<MH982> in the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>,’ is it not He whose<MH834> high<MH1116> places<MH1116> and whose altars<MH4196> Hezekiah<MH2396> has removed<MH5493>, and has said<MH559> to Judah<MH3063> and to Jerusalem<MH3389>, ‘You shall worship<MH2331c> before<MH6440> this<MH2088> altar<MH4196> in Jerusalem<MH3389>’? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>come<MH4994> make<MH6148> a<MH6148> wager<MH6148> with my master<MH113> the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>: I will give<MH5414> you two thousand<MH505> horses<MH5483b>, if<MH518> you are<MH3201> able<MH3201> on your part to put<MH5414> riders<MH7392> on them! <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>How<MH349> then can you drive<MH7725> back<MH7725> <i>even</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>one<MH259> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>official<MH6346> of the least<MH6996a> of my master’s<MH113> servants<MH5650>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>rely<MH982> on Egypt<MH4714> for chariots<MH7393> and horsemen<MH6571b>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Have I now<MH6258> come<MH5927> up<MH5927> without<MH1107> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>the LORD’S<MH3068> approval against<MH5921> this<MH2088> place<MH4725> to destroy<MH7843> it? The LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to me, ‘Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH5921> this<MH2088> land<MH776> and destroy<MH7843> it.’”’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then Eliakim<MH471> the son<MH1121> of Hilkiah<MH2518>, Shebnah<MH7644>, and Joah<MH3098>, said<MH559> to Rabshakeh<MH7262>, “Speak<MH1696> now<MH4994> to your servants<MH5650> in Aramaic<MH762>, because<MH3588> we <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>understand<MH8085> <i>it;</i> and do not speak<MH1696> with us in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>Judean<MH3066> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>so that the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are on the wall<MH2346> hear<MH241> <i>you.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>But Rabshakeh<MH7262> said<MH559> to them, “Has my master<MH113> sent<MH7971> me <i>only</i> to your master<MH113> and to you to speak<MH1696> these<MH428> words<MH1697>? <i>Has he</i> not <i>also sent me</i> to the men<MH376> who sit<MH3427> on the wall<MH2346>, <i>doomed</i> to eat<MH398> their own dung<MH2716> and drink<MH8354> their own urine<MH7890> with you?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then Rabshakeh<MH7262> stood<MH5975> up and shouted<MH7121> with a loud<MH1419> voice<MH6963> in Judean<MH3066>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>saying<MH1696, 559>, “Hear<MH8085> the word<MH1697> of the great<MH1419> king<MH4428>, the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the king<MH4428> says<MH559>: ‘Do not let Hezekiah<MH2396> deceive<MH5378> you, for he will not be<MH3201> able<MH3201> to save<MH5337> you from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>my hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And do not let Hezekiah<MH2396> lead you to trust<MH982> in the LORD<MH3068> by saying<MH559>, “The LORD<MH3068> will certainly<MH5337> save<MH5337> us, and this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> will not be handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Do not listen<MH8085> to Hezekiah<MH2396>, for this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> says<MH559>: “Make<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>your peace<MH1293> with me and come<MH3318> out<MH3318> to me, and eat<MH398>, each<MH376> one, <i>from</i> his vine<MH1612> and each<MH376> <i>from</i> his fig<MH8384> tree<MH8384>, and drink<MH8354>, each<MH376> one, the waters<MH4325> of his own cistern<MH953a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>until<MH5704> I come<MH935> and take<MH3947> you to a land<MH776> like your own land<MH776>, a land<MH776> of grain<MH1715> and new<MH8492> wine<MH8492>, a land<MH776> of bread<MH3899> and vineyards<MH3754>, a land<MH776> of olive<MH2132> trees<MH2132> <i>producing</i> oil<MH3323>, and of honey<MH1706>, so that you will live<MH2421a> and not die<MH4191>.” But do not listen<MH8085> to Hezekiah<MH2396>, because<MH3588> he misleads<MH5496> you by saying<MH559>, “The LORD<MH3068> will save<MH5337> us.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Has any<MH376> of the gods<MH430> of the nations<MH1471> actually<MH5337> saved<MH5337> his land<MH776> from the hand<MH3027> of the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/18-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Where<MH346> are the gods<MH430> of Hamath<MH2574> and Arpad<MH774>? Where<MH346> are the gods<MH430> of Sepharvaim<MH5617>, Hena<MH2012>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>Ivvah<MH5755>?
