Now Jesus was tired with <i>his</i> journey, and sat down at the well: <i>and</i> it was about the sixth hour <i>of the day,</i><p> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><i>when</i> a woman of Samaria coming to draw water, Jesus saith unto her, <FR>Give me to drink.<Fr> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>(For his disciples were gone away to the city to buy food.) <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But the Samaritan saith unto Him, How is it that thou who art a Jew askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan? for the Jews have no <i>friendly</i> intercourse with the Samaritans. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Jesus answered and said unto her, <FR>If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith unto thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldst have asked of Him, and He would have given thee living water.<Fr> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>The woman saith unto Him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water? <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his children, and his cattle? <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Jesus answered and said unto her, <FR>Whosoever drinketh of this water, will thirst again;<Fr> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span><FR>but he that drinketh of the water which I shall give him, shall never thirst: but the water, which I shall give him, will be in him a fountain of water springing up unto eternal life.<Fr><p> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>The woman saith unto Him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Jesus saith unto her, <FR>Go call thine husband, and come hither.<Fr> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus saith unto her, <FR>Thou hast said right, I have no husband:<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>for thou hast had five husbands; and he, whom thou now hast, is not thy husband: this thou hast said true.<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The woman saith unto Him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where <i>men</i> ought to worship. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Jesus saith unto her, <FR>Woman, believe me, the time is coming, when ye shall worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><FR>Ye worship ye know not what; <Fr><i>but</i><FR> we worship what we know: for salvation is from the Jews.<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span><FR>But the time is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for the Father requireth such worshippers of Him.<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><FR>God is a spirit, and they that worship Him, must worship in spirit and truth.<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><i>Then</i> saith the woman unto Him, I know that <i>the</i> Messiah, that is to say <i>the</i> Christ, is coming; <i>and</i> when He comes, He will tell us all <i>things.</i> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Jesus saith unto her, <FR>I, who am talking to thee, am <Fr><i>He.</i><p> <A name="28"></a><p class="hdg">The Disciples Return and Marvel<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And upon this came his disciples and wondered that He talked with the woman: (though none <i>of them</i> said, What dost thou seek? or, Why dost thou talk with her?) <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>therefore the woman left her water-pot, and went away into the city, <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>and saith to the people, Come, see a man who hath told me all that ever I did; is not this the Christ? <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>They therefore went out of the city, and came to Him.<p> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>In the mean time his disciples addressed Him, saying, Master, eat. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>But He said unto them, <FR>I have food to eat, which ye know not of.<Fr> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Therefore the disciples said one to another, Hath any one brought Him <i>aught</i> to eat? <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Jesus saith unto them, <FR>My food is to do the will of Him that sent me, and to finish his work.<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span><FR>Do not ye say, it is yet four months, and <Fr><i>then</i><FR> cometh harvest? Behold, lift up your eyes, and see the fields, they are already white for harvest.<Fr> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth <Fr><i>the</i><FR> fruit together unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together;<Fr> <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span><FR>for herein the saying is verified, that one soweth, and another reapeth,<Fr> <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span><i>in as much as</i><FR> I have sent you to reap <Fr><i>that on</i><FR> which ye have not laboured: others have laboured, and ye are entered into their labors.<Fr><p> <A name="40"></a><p class="hdg">Many Samaritans Believe<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on Him, because of what the woman said, testifying, He told me all that ever I did. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Therefore when the Samaritans came to Him, they desired Him to stay with them: and He staid there two days. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And many more believed on account of his own discourse: <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>and said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of what thou hast spoken; for we ourselves have heard <i>Him,</i> and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.<p> <A name="44"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Heals the Official’s Son<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/8.htm#5">Matthew 8:5–13</a>; <a href ="../luke/7.htm">Luke 7:1–10</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And after two days he departed thence, and went into <i>Cana of</i> Galilee. <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>For Jesus himself <i>had</i> testified that a prophet hath no honor in his own country. <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And when He was come into Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all that he did in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went to the feast.<p> <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>Therefore Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where He had made the water wine. <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/4-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum: who, when he heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, went to Him, and intreated Him, that he would come down and heal his son;
