just a little over a year after the U.S. invasion of Iraq and before the sectarian violence began, the Iraqi Association of University Teachers (AUT) reported that <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storyCode=191084&sectioncode=26" class="external" target="_blank">250 academics had been killed</a>. Award-winning British journalist Robert Fisk <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://www.thetruthseeker.co.uk/article.asp?ID=2042" class="external" target="_blank">had warned</a> early that year of the assassinations of Iraqi academics, but few U.S. newspapers picked up on the story.  By the end of 2006, according to<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/higher/iraqs-universities-are-in-meltdown-427316.html" class="external" target="_blank"> <em>The Independent</em></a>, over 470 academics had been killed. Another British paper, <em>The Guardian</em>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2006/dec/12/internationaleducationnews.highereducation" class="external" target="_blank">reported</a> that about 500 academics were killed just from the Universities of Baghdad and Basra alone.</p> <p>Based on multiple sources, the B<em>Russell</em>s Tribunal sifted through such reports and <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://www.brusselstribunal.org/Academics.htm" class="external" target="_blank">published on its website</a> the names of over 400 murdered academics and when they were killed. Although the exact total number of assassinated academics is not really known, the indefatigable advocate for human rights Dirk Adriaensens gives a detailed analysis of the data available so far in his contribution to the book <em><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://us.macmillan.com/culturalcleansinginiraq" class="external" target="_blank">Cultural Cleansing in Iraq</a></em>. According to Adriaensens, most of those killed were from the Universities of Bagdad (57 percent) and Basra (14 percent). In addition, 35 percent died in detention after being arrested/kidnapped by some security forces. The modus operandi for the killings was a professional, well-organized assassination. Fifty-four percent of the deaths occurred as a targeted killing, at point-blank range with hand guns or automatic weapons. The killing of academics did not follow any sectarian agenda since the murdered were Sunni and Shia. No one has taken responsibility for the killings, and no one has been arrested.</p> <p>The reports of these murdered Iraqi academics have been around for a few years, mostly in the foreign press and on websites. I admit to an initial skepticism about their veracity. I was even more concerned about who was responsible for these heinous crimes and why. Iraqis living in Iraq knew of these murders first-hand, but did not know the culprits. Their suspicions fell naturally on the occupying power.</p> <p>Along with these tragic deaths was the concomitant wave of death threats and intimidation against other Iraqi academics, which resulted in tens of thousands of Iraqi academics literally running abroad for their life. <em>The Washington Post </em>recently described the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/23/AR2010112306747.html" class="external" target="_blank">plight of one Iraqi family</a> living in the United States after the husband, a professor, was assassinated and the wife, a physician, survived but gravely wounded. For some, the escape abroad was only temporary. A<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://iraqiacademicsunderattack.wordpress.com/2010/10/27/two-iraqi-academics-killed-after-their-returning-to-iraq-english-arabic-castellano/" class="external" target="_blank"> professor and a dean</a> who left and returned in the past six months to Iraq were professionally assassinated.  Iraq has suffered the decapitation of its intellectual class on a staggering scale, which has thrown the country back to the dark ages.</p> <p>According to the new revelations of Wikileaks, in some cases the United States, through the military, contractors, and others, killed innocent Iraqi civilians including women and children. As a matter of policy we handed over Iraqi detainees to Iraqi security forces with full knowledge that they would be subjected to torture, rape, and murder. Moreover, when our military received the reports of torture, rape, and murder it chose to ignore them. Such a policy is contrary to international law, U.S. laws, and American values.</p> <p>It’s not clear whether the U.S. government or the U.S. military knows who assassinated the Iraqi academics. We don’t know if U.S. officials or military commanders looked the other way when local security forces committed those crimes. But the Wikileaks documents raise many disturbing questions about a possible U.S. role in these assassinations. Even the Gulf Cooperation Council, and its half-dozen U.S.-friendly Arab members, has <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hiUt15hxCn1JG0tU8iLw_Oj6yb8A?docId=CNG.1c29e0b64ef02ac621d8a8911f61ba89.191" class="external" target="_blank">called on</a> the Obama administration to "open a serious and transparent investigation" into possible "crimes against humanity."</p> <p>The evidence so far is sufficient to warrant a thorough investigation by an independent body. No functions will be held on Christmas Eve, nor decorations or ceremonies. A community enduring suffering and losses is preparing to experience the message of hope brought by Jesus to earth because, for Iraqi Christians, Christmas is always a time of joy as well as martyrdom. Mgr Louis Sako, Chaldean archbishop of Kirkuk, bears witness.</p> <p>Baghdad (<a title="Asia News English" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://www.asianews.it/en.html" target="_blank" class="external"><strong>AsiaNews</strong></a>) – Midnight Christmas Mass has been cancelled in Baghdad, Mosul and Kirkuk as a consequence of the never-ending assassinations of Christians and the attack against Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral on 31 October, which killed 57 people. For security reasons, churches will not be decorated. Masses will be sombre and held during the day.</p> <p>A sense of sadness and mourning prevails among Christians. There is much concern for the future of young people. For the past two months, they have been unable to go to university. The same is true for many families that fled north who now must plan a future without any concrete bases. </p> <p>No one expects anything from the government as far as protecting Christians. Political leaders are too caught up in setting up a new administration.</p> <p>Security is slightly better in Kirkuk than in the capital, but here too abductions and threats occur. For this reason, we have decided for the first time since the war began not to celebrate Midnight Mass. We shall simply not have any feast, period. Santa Claus will not be coming for the children; there will be no official ceremony with the authorities proffering their best wishes.</p> <p>For the past six weeks, we have not celebrated Mass because of a lack of security, except late in the morning and Saturday afternoons. For now, we have also stopped teaching the catechism. </p> <p>We do not have the right to put people’s lives in danger. All our parish churches have security guards, but when worshippers step outside the church and into the street, they become an easy target. </p> <p>Yet, despite everything, we shall pray for peace this Christmas and help the poor families of Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah. So far, 106 families have arrived from Baghdad and Mosul.</p> <p>In my homily, I am going to focus on such problems, on the clashes and on people’s fears but also on the fact that Christmas brings a message of hope. Of course, heaven and earth are two different realities. The Massacre of the Innocents followed Christmas. Thus, for us in Iraq, Christmas is a time of hope and joy as well as pain and martyrdom.</p> <p>Peace is a goal that people of good will should make happen. The result is that it “is clear now is that they [Christians] will all leave Iraq,” said Pius Kasha, vicar of Iraq’s Syriac Catholic Church. Both quotes are in an editorial signed by Tariq Alhomayed, editor of the London-based pan-Arabic daily <i>Al Sharq Al Awsat</i>. </p> <p>In his article, he asks a question, namely “What has been done since 2008, rather than 2003, by the Iraqi government to protect an Iraqi component from repression and organized violence?”, and answers it: “Unfortunately, [. . .] nothing!” </p> <p>For Alhomayed, al-Qaeda is obviously to blame. The terrorist group has in fact not hesitated in carrying out massacred and committing atrocities, but for him the issue is what Iraqi authorities have done to defend Iraq’s Christians, for “Iraqi Christians remain targets in public”’ despite being “outspoken in their demand for government protection”. </p> <p>Since 2008, Iraqi Christians have turned to the Churches (rather the government) for protection against violence, at least the half that is still left in the country. </p> <p>Without self-defence militias, Christians have turned to church buildings that are guarded by security personnel. He wonders though, “how did the terrorists get in” in the latest incident. </p> <p>In his view, targeting “minorities, including Iraqi Christians, means the disintegration of Iraq”. It “is an infringement upon its cultural and political composition. We must ensure that minorities are not excluded on sectarian or ethnic grounds, for this will open the gates of hell. [. . .] We must also ensure that tomorrow, the same events do not occur but with Lebanon’s Christians, God forbid. They did not come with [L. Paul] Bremer, and others. Iraqi Christians also suffer the worst conditions of any Christians in the region”. </p> <p>This came against the backdrop of an appeal from the Chaldean Archbishop of Kirkuk, Luis Saca, informing the Iraqi government of the need to protect Iraq’s Christians, when he said that “The Christians in Iraq do not have militias or clans to defend them”. He added “I feel pain and injustice, because innocent people are being killed and we do not know why”. </p> <p>At the time, we faced condemnation and media campaigns by people affiliated with the Iraqi government, but here we are today witnessing a massacre, along with other atrocities against Christians in Iraq. The massacre did not happen at a checkpoint, or as the result of an assassination of a Christian figure at his home, or on a random road. Instead, it was an organized, armed attack on the Syriac Catholic Church of Our Lady, in the Karrada district of Baghdad. Reports suggest 52 people were killed, nearly two years after the call of Bishop Luis Saca, urging the Iraqi government to protect Christians. </p> <p>It was striking when Father Youssef Thomas Mirkis, head of the Dominican sect in Iraq, said after yesterday’s massacre that “the plot had been in preparation for a long time, considering the weapons and ammunition found in the cathedral…these take a long time to stockpile”. The words of the vicar of Iraq’s Syriac Catholic Church, Pius Kasha, were deeply saddening, when he said “what is clear now is that they [Christians] will all leave Iraq”. </p> <p>Thus, the question today is: What has been done since 2008, rather than 2003, by the Iraqi government to protect an Iraqi component from repression and organized violence? Unfortunately, the answer is nothing! It is easy to accuse al-Qaeda, an organization which never hesitates to commit massacres and atrocities. However, Iraqi Christians remain targets in public, and are outspoken in their demand for government protection, so what has Nuri al-Maliki’s government done for them? </p> <p>One of the hostages in yesterday’s terrorist attack said “Men wearing military uniforms broke into the church carrying their weapons, and killed a priest on the spot”. It is well known that since 2008, Iraq’s Christians, nearly half of whom have left the country, are now turning to the churches [instead of the government] in search of protection from violence. Interestingly, the targeted church was under the protection of security personnel, so how did the terrorists get in? </p> <p>We can only return to what we said in 2008; that the targeting of minorities, including Iraqi Christians, means the disintegration of Iraq, and is an infringement upon its cultural and political composition. We must ensure that minorities are not excluded on sectarian or ethnic grounds, for this will open the gates of hell. Some are able to incite such a possibility, but so far no one can ensure this will not happen. Their businesses are targeted by extremists. Their leaders are kidnapped and assassinated. The Christian minority in Iraq, once a community left in peace to prosper, continues to be under threat from a campaign of persecution which has forced as many as 500,000 Christians to flee the country.</p> <p>During the reign of Saddam Hussein, the estimated 1.4 million Christians – many of them Chaldean-Assyrians and Armenians, with small numbers of Roman Catholics – were generally left alone if they didn’t oppose the government and they lived in relative peace with the country’s Sunnis and Shiites. </p> <p>Some, such as Tariq Aziz, Saddam’s foreign minister and deputy prime minister, rose to the highest levels of power.</p> <p>Things changed after the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq toppled Saddam’s regime. Christians became a target of violence when Islamist groups and ordinary Muslims angered by the military action began seeing them as the enemy, associating with them with the "crusaders" – the invading armies of the United States and Britain.</p> <p>Tensions over their religious ties with the West and their differing beliefs to the strict Islamic majority, which had been simmering for years, spilled over as the occupying forces dug in.</p> <p>"Iraqi Christians became caught up in the overlapping violence and multiple conflicts unleashed after 2003," Dr. Kristian Ulrichsen, an Iraq expert at the London School of Economics and Political Science, told Deutsche Welle. "They became exposed to the similar patterns of kidnappings, extortion, beheadings, rape and forced taxation that affected all other communities as the erosion of central government control left a security vacuum that was exploited by organised and opportunistic criminality and anti-occupation resistance groups." </p> <p>"In addition to this, Christians specifically were targeted by Church bombings and assassination attempts owing to a perceived association with the aims and intentions of the occupying forces."</p> <h3>Association with occupying powers makes Christians targets</h3> <p>In 2004, insurgents launched a coordinated bombing campaign targeted churches in Baghdad. In 2007, after Pope Benedict XVI made comments perceived to be anti-Islam, nationwide attacks on churches hit an all-time high and a priest in the northern city of Mosul was kidnapped and later found beheaded. In January 2009, 40 Iraqi Christians were killed and approximately 12,000 fled their homes.</p> <p>In February this year, at least 10 Iraqi Christians were killed by unknown gunmen in Mosul as the country was preparing for the March 7 elections. The escalating violence ahead of the ballot led to hundreds of Iraqi Christians taking to the streets in a number of protests, chanting slogans such as "Stop the killing of Christians."</p> <p>During the years since the invasion, life for the Christian minority has become beset by danger. The waves of violent attacks against churches, businesses and homes have forced more than half of the Christian population to flee for their lives, according to statistcs from the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Those churches which remain standing are mostly empty, their congregations long gone or too afraid to attend.</p> <p>"The Christian minority in Iraq has been reduced to a shadow of its former self," said Ulrichsen. "Up to two-thirds of the pre-war community has been displaced or forced to flee the country. Although conditions in Iraq have improved somewhat since 2007, the security situation remains intensely fragile and prone to reversal, and the return of refugees and displaced persons to their homes has been very slow and halting."</p> <p>"There’s a real possibility that 2,000 years of settlement by Christian communities in Iraq is in danger of near-total extinction." </p> <h3>US withdrawal leave Christians’ fate in Iraqi hands</h3> <p>As the United States steps up its military withdrawal from Iraq, the Christian minority is forced to look at the Iraqi security structure for protection. However, the prospect of being protecetd by the Iraqi police and armed forces fails to instill any confidence in the Christian minority.</p> <p>"The greatest concern about a US pullout is that extremists will exploit any lapses in security and attack vulnerable groups, including Christians," Samer Muscati, an Iraq expert from the Middle East division at Human Rights Watch, told Deutsche Welle. </p> <p>"Although the Iraqi government publicly condemns violence against Christians and other minority groups, it has not taken measures to bolster security in areas where minorities are particularly vulnerable to attacks, and it has not thoroughly investigated attacks," he added. "Iraqi security forces rarely apprehend, prosecute and punish perpetrators of such attacks, which has created a climate of impunity."</p> <h3>Christians search for ways to protect themselves </h3> <p>One muted proposal to protect the Christian minority involves the creation of an autonomous province on a neglected area of land located to the north and west of Mosul, called Ninawah Plain, which would act as a sanctuary.</p> <p>While advocates of the idea say it wouldn’t stop the violence against Christians in the large, high-risk cities of Mosul, Baghdad, and Al-Basrah, it would give the Christians a place where their needs could be met, their beliefs supported and their security guaranteed.</p> <p>The proposals suggest that Ninaweh Plain would an autonomous administrative region in which the Christian minority could govern themselves and would be free to participate in the federalist system which is developing in Iraq.</p> <h3>Creation of autonomous region plagued by problems </h3> <p>However, the idea of an autonomous region for the Christian minority in reality looks unviable. </p> <p>"The image of a real autonomy is unrealistic," Nizar Hanna, director of the Assyrian Democratic Movement’s Baghdad office, told Deutsche Welle. "Up to now, there are no concrete plans which show how this would work. Even in the Kurdish constitution, they have the right to autonomy in the areas where they are the majority but nowhere is this the case. Besides, there are no areas in which only Christians live. Shabak, Yazidis, Kurds and Arabs also live there." </p> <p>"To an extent a safe haven for Christians exists in Iraqi Kurdistan," Kristian Ulrichsen said. "Thousands of internally displaced Iraqi Christians have moved there. Ismail Khalif Jasim, the top intelligence officer in Nineveh Province, was scrutinizing faces last week as he walked through what the police say is the most dangerous neighborhood in <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/iraq/index.html?inline=nyt-geo" class="external" target="_blank">Iraq</a>’s most violent city. The place is so risky that some of his colleagues apologetically offered reasons why they would be unable to accompany him there. </p> <p>One major admitted he was simply too scared. He was forced, though, along with more than 200 other soldiers and police officers, to go to the neighborhood, Amil. Iraqi security forces claim to control it. But in reality Amil is in the throes of another spate of killings, as the American military works to root out Islamist militants from the area before it reduces the number of its troops in Iraq to 50,000 from about 90,000 by the end of August. </p> <p>Colonel Jasim’s visit there was aimed at persuading groups of stone-faced residents to cooperate with the Iraqi Army — an entity almost universally loathed here for its unapologetically rough treatment of the area’s people. But, he suggested, the authorities were better than the insurgents holed up there. </p> <p>“They are not just outlaws,” the colonel was saying, suggesting that they were far more dangerous and had none of the romance sometimes associated with criminals. The men regarded him impassively. </p> <p>“They say you have to slaughter soldiers and police,” he said. “We found information that they want to slaughter more people. Do you want more people killed?” </p> <p>No luck. The men did not answer. The colonel, his sunglasses hiding his eyes but not the look of contempt that curled around his lips, moved on to the next cluster of men. </p> <p>Soldiers walked on either side of him, and in front and behind. Armored police and military vehicles were parked on every corner in the neighborhood, its entrance points blocked to traffic. The street had been strung with concertina wire. Only a few people dared to leave their houses. </p> <p>Amil is a stronghold for Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, a largely homegrown group of Sunni insurgents, but that is something the neighborhood does not want to discuss. Questions about the group elicit only nervous, evasive responses in the largely Sunni Arab enclave. No one dares mention its name. </p> <p>During the past several weeks, United States forces have aggressively begun to try to root out Qaeda operatives in Amil before the last of the American combat troops leaves. This month, the American military said in a statement that it had arrested a man who had committed “assassinations against Iraqi judicial and police officials, and has allegedly coordinated improvised explosive device attacks against” the Iraqi police and army. The man’s identity was not released. </p> <p>Four days later, gunfire in an adjoining neighborhood killed two Iraqi police officers on patrol. The same day, in central Mosul, the deputy governor survived a bomb blast that demolished his armored car. The next day, a bomb in a public market near Amil killed 2 people and wounded 27. </p> <p>Several days later, United States forces announced the arrest in Mosul of another senior member of <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/a/al_qaeda/index.html?inline=nyt-org" class="external" target="_blank">Al Qaeda</a>, along with several other men. </p> <p>The violence goes on, however, seemingly unabated. There are car bombs every day. Some are defused. Some blow up. </p> <p>Colonel Jasim’s patrol posed a specific problem for people in Amil: Being seen talking to an Iraqi Army or police officer, regular targets for Al Qaeda, would mean trouble. Talking to an American soldier, even exchanging hellos, could mean torture and death. </p> <p>“We believe they have many supporters in the neighborhood, so we’re afraid of them,” Majid Riyadh Ahmed, 40, said about a group of men who in broad daylight recently gunned down a politician on a sidewalk. </p> <p>“It is a hot spot,” he said, using the term that has become synonymous with Amil. </p> <p>Like many here, Mr. Ahmed differentiated between the types of violence that take place. </p> <p>“There are some terror actions and there are some jihad actions,” he said. Jihad actions are those aimed at American forces or their Iraqi security force allies. Terror actions are those directed at residents. </p> <p>Asked if he felt safe, Mr. Ahmed, a father of four, did not hesitate. “I am scared,” he said. </p> <p>On this warm morning, Amil was swarming with soldiers and police officers. People peered through their windows and expressed amazement. They said there were normally very few security force members around, leaving members of Al Qaeda to roam freely, extorting shop owners and intimidating everyone else. </p> <p>“I’m wondering why the police, who know this area is dangerous, don’t move on it,” one resident said. </p> <p>But Atheel al-Nujaifi, the provincial governor, said the issue was more complicated. </p> <p>“The security forces are deployed everywhere in Mosul, but there are areas we call unsafe because it is easy for Al Qaeda to commit actions, and then to hide among the people in those areas,” he said. “A hot spot doesn’t mean there isn’t any army or police. The neighborhood is under the control of the federal police.” </p> <p>He said Al Qaeda was able to operate in Amil because “the people are either sympathetic or afraid.” </p> <p>Whatever the reason, no one has been able to quell Mosul’s violence: It is one of the few urban areas in Iraq where American combat troops patrol the streets. Some 18 Iraqi Army battalions are stationed in the city, and hundreds of Iraqi police officers staff checkpoints. </p> <p>But in Amil, people say they want nothing to do with the Iraqi Army in particular — which in Mosul is composed primarily of Shiites from southern Iraq. Residents complain the soldiers do not understand their culture, and are rude at best, brutal at worst, suspecting everyone in the neighborhood of being a member of Al Qaeda. </p> <p>“There’s no trust between the security forces and the people,” said one resident, Hazim Mahmud al-Sahan, whose son was recently killed in Amil, not far from an Iraqi Army checkpoint. </p> <p>For years, though, the greater scorn was poured on Americans. But in a few months they will be gone, it seems regardless of whether places like Amil descend into worse violence. </p> <p>“There will be greater problems when the Americans leave,” said Didar Abdulla al-Zibari, a member of the local provincial council. Jazeera have a report on the assassination of Faris Jassim al-Jubouri entitled "<a title="Iraq politician shot dead in Mosul" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2010/06/201065112649147845.html" class="external" target="_blank">Iraq politician shot dead in Mosul</a>" their report is below, from this report and other local reports several things are known:</p> <ul> <li>The murder was committed by men in army uniform (not in police uniforms as al Jazeera’s report says the difference is important for reasons I’ll explain below). </li> <li>The death squad went from house to house in the village claiming to be searching for mortars. </li> <li>Several residents said that the men in uniform sounded "strange" – this is a codeword for saying that they spoke Arabic with a non-Arabic accent. </li> <li>The account given by the family is different from al Jazeera’s — the family say that the death squad dragged him out of the house and shot him down there. </li> </ul> <p>Al Jazeera’s account makes much of the fact that the victim was a replacement candidate for the Iraqiya list headed by Iyad Allawi, and the claim by two Iraqiya politicians Intisar Allawi and  Maysoun Damlouji  that this is part of an ongoing campaign of murder and intimidation against the Iraqiya list, for reasons I explain below I think al-Jazeera have got their coverage of this murder of a relatively unknown politician wrong: </p> <div style="width: 98%;"> <div class="container"> <div class="shadow"> <div class="frame"> <h3>Iraq politician shot dead in Mosul </h3> <blockquote><p>An Iraqi politician from the Iraqiya bloc has been shot dead by armed men in the northern city of Mosul, officials say. <br/>Police say unknown assailants shot Faris Jassim al-Jubouri early on Saturday in his home in Mosul about 350km north of Baghdad.</p> <p>No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.</p> <p>The Iraqiya bloc of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi narrowly won elections in March, beating the coalition led by Nouri Maliki, the incumbent prime minister. <br/>Al-ubouri was a candidate on Iraqiya’s list for parliament but did not win a seat in the 325-seat assembly.</p> <p>Al-Jubouri was the third candidate from the party to be killed in the past two weeks.</p> <h4>Killing ‘political’ </h4> <p>A police source, who asked not to be named, said al-Jubouri was shot dead by gunmen in police uniform.</p> <p>He said the men searched several homes in al-Jubouri’s village saying they were looking for mortars. <br/>On entering his home, "they tied up his brother and when he came downstairs they opened fire and killed him," he told the Reuters news agency. <br/>The Iraqiya party says al-Jubouri was killed for political reasons. <br/>Maysoun Damlouji, the spokeswoman for Iraqiya described the attack as one in a string of killings "clearly targeting the Iraqiya list."</p> <p>Two other Iraqiya candidates were gunned down in February and May. <br/>"Iraqiya was targeted before the election, and the attacks are continuing," Intisar Allawi, a senior Iraqiya official, told Reuters.</p> <p>"We don’t know who we will lose next. We call on the government to provide protection for winning candidates."</p> </blockquote> <p><strong>Source:</strong> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040142/http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2010/06/201065112649147845.html" class="external" target="_blank">Iraq politician shot dead in Mosul – Middle East – Al Jazeera English</a></p> <p> </div> </p></div> </p></div> </p></div> <p style="margin-top: 12px; padding-top: 10px;">Based on the evidence available to me there is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that Iraqiya list politicians and organisers were targeted prior to the election and that the campaign of murder and intimidation to which they have been subjected is continuing. I do not however believe that the murder of  Faris al-Jubouri was part of that campaign:</p> <ul> <li>The murder was committed by "men in army uniform" not as al-Jazeera’s report has it by men police uniform. The difference is important. It is relatively easy to get army uniforms and relatively difficult to get hold of police uniforms. The army in Mosul consists either of Peshmerga units or of Arab units known to be heavily infiltrated by persons loyal to the Badr brigade and its political sponsors. By contrast the police in that part of Mosul are widely trusted by the populace because they believed to neutral in the performance of their duties. Put plainly that means that they are not politically infiltrated by Kurdish nationalists or by sectarian political parties such as Badr. </p> <p>Moreover the identities of the police are known to the local populace a group of men masquerading as police would be quickly unmasked and attacked. </li> <li>Most importantly of all there is also the matter of al-Jubouri’s past: <p><em><strong> Faris Jassim al-Jubouri had been an airforce pilot under the Ba’athist government overthrown by the American invaders. <br/></strong></em> <br/>Since the American invasion there has been a long-running death-squad campaign against former armed forces commanders and officers. </li> <li>This death squad campaign has in particular targetted former Airforce pilots, especially those who like al-Jubouri flew sorties against the Iranians.</li> </ul> <p>I can understand why Iraqiya list politicians such Intisar Allawi and Maysoun Damlouji, would see al-Jubouri’s murder as part of a campaign against their party. There is no doubt that al-Iraqiya politicians and organisers are being subjected to a campaign of murder and intimidation. Nor is there any doubt in my mind that the current government, which is led by their political enemies, has deliberately ignored their pleas that they be given police protection.</p> <p>But I do not believe that this particular murder is linked to the political standoff between Dawa and Iraqiya, it is I think, further evidence that the death squad campaign against former army and air force
