To a great extent, research attention has followed patterns of media and communications research more generally, focusing on children as consumers, and related patterns of consumption as well as contexts, effects, and consequences of media use and media repertoires. The wider socio-political environment and the technological landscape of global internet connectivity as it impacts on children and youths have also received much attention, with reference to the shaping of policies that take children&#39;s views and children&#39;s lives into account. Whether cultural texts are produced for children or about them, their depictions of childhood provide important resources for those interested in exploring the logics and practices through which contemporary childhoods are imagined, produced and experienced. In recent years, scholars have considered how representations of children and childhood in cultural texts contribute to shared understandings and normative discourses about children&#39;s place in the social world (Burman, 2008; Khan, 2009; Saltmarsh, 2011). Of course, representations of childhood and the discourses in which they are implicated are neither determined nor fixed. As Alan Prout points out, globalising forces in the latter half of the twentieth century have brought about economic, social and technological changes that have in turn been implicated in destabilising the representation of childhood as a coherent and knowable category: Traditional ways of representing childhood in discourse and in image no longer seemed adequate to its emerging forms. At the same time, they also seem to implicitly reinforce traditional gender stereotypes. We pursue this inquiry by analysing the varying representations of the under-aged, disseminated by local TV channels in the Veneto Region. In our modern social world, communication processes take place across a variety of media. As a consequence, we can no longer explain the influences of media by focusing on any one single medium, its content and possible effects. In order to explain how media changes are related to transformations in culture and society we have to take into account the cross-media character of communications. In view of this, the book series &#39;Transforming Communications&#39; is dedicated to cross-media communication research. It aims to support all kinds of research that are interested in processes of communication taking place across different kinds of media and that subsequently make media&#39;s transformative potential accessible. With this profile, the series addresses a wide range of different areas of study: media production, representation and appropriation as well as media technologies and their use, all from a current as well as a a historical perspective. The overall point of departure for the Clearinghouse&#39;s efforts with respect to children, youth and media is the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The aim of the Clearinghouse is to increase awareness and knowledge about children, youth and media, thereby providing a basis for relevant policymaking, contributing to a constructive public debate, and enhancing children&#39;s and young people&#39;s media literacy and media competence. Moreover, it is hoped that the Clearinghouse&#39;s work will stimulate further research on children, youth and media. The International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth and Media informs various groups of usersresearchers, policy-makers, media professionals, voluntary organisations, teachers, students and interested individuals-about • research on children, young people and media, with special attention to media violence, • research and practices regarding media education and children&#39;s/young people&#39;s participation in the media, and • measures, activities and research concerning children&#39;s and young people&#39;s media environment. Fundamental to the work of the Clearinghouse is the creation of a global network. The Clearinghouse publishes a yearbook and a newsletter. Several bibliographies and a worldwide register of organisations concerned with children and media have been compiled.
