A British <a href="/allies/aircraft/b24.htm">B-24 Liberator</a> (86 Sqn RAF) dropped three depth charges which caused only minor damage, but two men were lost when the boat dived. [Oberbootsmaat Christian Wieland, Matrosengefreiter Rudolf Sch盲dlich] </p> <p><strong><a href="/boats/u172.htm">U-172</a></strong>. The boat was attacked by two B-24 Liberator bombers (USAAF Sqdn 1) which dropped 12 depth charges. U-172 stayed on the surface and fought it out without being damaged. (<cite>Blair, vol 2, page 204</cite>)</p> <h3>1945</h3> <p>The depth charge "attack" on 7 April 1945 in the North Atlantic <a href=\"/maps/us_east_coast.htm\">east of Boston</a>, USA, in position 42.22N, 69.46W, by the US destroyer escort <a href=/allies/warships/ship/1478.html>USS Gustafson</a> which was credited with sinking <a href=/boats/u857.htm>U-857</a> was actually not directed against any submarine.</p> (<cite>1994-04-01, FDS/NHB</cite>)</p> <p><strong><a href="/boats/u1024.htm">U-1024</a></strong>. After a successful attack on convoy <a href="/ops/convoys/convoys.php?convoy=HX-346">HX 346</a>, the escorts attacked <a href="/boats/u1024.htm">U-1024</a> but without result. The boat sat on the bottom in a hollow until the hunt was called off.
