In May, Facebook rolled out its Instant Articles program, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2015/05/facebooks-instant-articles-are-here.html">marking</a> the first time that news organizations published content within the social network. Earlier this month, Apple <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/349837/3-things-to-know-about-apples-new-news-app/">unveiled</a> its News app, a news reader that will feature content <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.bidnessetc.com/45467-apple-inc-to-hire-journalists-for-curated-content-on-news-app/">curated by editorial professionals</a>.</p> <p>And now comes word, via BuzzFeed’s Mat Honan, that Twitter is preparing to launch <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.buzzfeed.com/mathonan/twitters-top-secret-project-lightning-revealed#.cm43z8mME">Project Lightning</a>, a feature that would showcase real-time information feeds relating to ongoing events. For example, if you want to view a stream of relevant tweets related to the Super Bowl, you will be able to press a new button and scrub back and forth to view 140-character bulletins organized in chronological order. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351987/twitter-is-hiring-people-with-newsroom-backgrounds-as-real-time-curators/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">→</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/mediawire/" title="View all posts in MediaWire">MediaWire</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351987/twitter-is-hiring-people-with-newsroom-backgrounds-as-real-time-curators/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="351987 http://www.poynter.org/?p=351987">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351987/twitter-is-hiring-people-with-newsroom-backgrounds-as-real-time-curators/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351987/twitter-is-hiring-people-with-newsroom-backgrounds-as-real-time-curators/" addthis:title="Twitter is hiring people with ‘newsroom backgrounds’ as real-time curators">Email</a> <a class="addthis_button_compact" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/351987/twitter-is-hiring-people-with-newsroom-backgrounds-as-real-time-curators/" addthis:title="Twitter is hiring people with ‘newsroom backgrounds’ as real-time curators">Share</a> </div> <script type="text/javascript" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707js_/http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#username=xa-4ccb31260be55b75"></script> <!-- AddThis Button END --></dd> </dl> </div> </div> <div id="post-351981" class="entry-content post-feature-secondary excerpt-12"> <div class="article excerpt"> <div class="image-right"><img width="100" height="87" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707im_/http://www.poynter.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/church-100.jpg" class="attachment-article-medium wp-post-image" alt="church-100"/></div> <h2 class="article"> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/?post_type=post&p=351981" title="Permalink to Church shooting: Choose your words carefully" rel="bookmark">Church shooting: Choose your words carefully</a> </h2> <p class="article-meta"> <span class="meta-byline"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/author/al-tompkins/" title="Posts by Al Tompkins" rel="author">Al Tompkins</a></span> <span class="meta-datetime"> <span class="meta-date">June 18, 2015</span> <span class="meta-time">12:08 pm</span> </span> </p> <div class="excerpt"><p> <div id="attachment_351989" style="width: 240px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707/http://www.poynter.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/needtoid.jpg"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150622042707im_/http://www.poynter.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/needtoid-230x300.jpg" alt="This image has been provided by the Charleston Police Department.(Charleston Police Department via AP)" width="230" height="300" class="size-medium wp-image-351989"/></a><p class="wp-caption-text">This image has been provided by the Charleston Police Department.(Charleston Police Department via AP)</p></div>I wanted to share some thoughts prompted by an email I got this morning by Matt Jaworowski, a Media General Digital Content Producer.</p> <p>Matt noticed a barrage of social media comments wondering why journalists are not using the word “terrorist” to describe the man who shot up a Charleston, South Carolina church.
