Ken Jennings saw his 75-day run on the popular game show end when he didn't know the answer to the question "Most of this firm's 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only four months a year." The correct answer was H&R; Block, which runs more than 12,000 retail tax offices in the United States. And even though 1040s aren't due for another seven months, many preparation services are already hiring specialists to meet the high demands of the upcoming tax season. <p>In many cases such positions can even lead to full-time work. If you have no previous tax preparation experience the first step is to enroll in a "crash course." These are generally offered by the larger companies, such as Jackson Hewitt and H&R; Block, that have their own education centers. Though the H&R; Blockcourse costs $199, you can get a $50 discount if you get a referral from a current company employee. <p>Those who pass with a score of 80 percent or higher are then eligible for a seasonal position and will have the opportunity to interview for a job. However, if you have previous tax prep experience you have an option of testing out of the basic course. According to H&R; Block manager of communications Gene King, the course appeals to a wide-range of individuals, from stay-at-home moms to military spouses to people who just want to know a little more about tax laws. "The income tax course is basically the application process," King says. "Though it doesn't guarantee employment it certainly makes you eligible." <p>For people who don't want to go through a program offered by one of the tax preparation chains, there are plenty of other ways to learn the skills, including online programs and courses at community colleges. Although being good with numbers in certainly an asset, tax preparers do not need to be accountants or bookkeepers. In fact, there are no federal requirements to become a tax preparer, although individuals who wish to work in California need to be licensed by the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) before they can receive payment for their services. <p>Many tax specialists say that they enjoy the flexibility of the schedule, which enables them to work any time between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. seven days a week. Veronica Urbina is about to start her fourth season as a H&R; Block tax specialist, and enjoys working the seasonal position because of the flexible hours, which enable her to look after her young child, and also because of the education program the company offers. Urbina has taken classes covering everything from real estate to retirement, and hopes to soon become an enrolled agent (EA), which will enable her to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the IRS for audits, collections and appeals. <p>"I was going to school for accounting when I found out that I could be getting paid as I learned," says Urbina. "Taking the courses at H&R; Block is a lot cheaper than going to college, and you are getting paid as you advance your career path." <p>Tax specialist Florence Butler started her career at H&R; Block as a receptionist and then started working the seasonal position. This will be her fourth year as a tax specialist. "I really enjoy doing this work because you get paid commission," Butler says. "I know people who have walked away with an extra $5,000. It's a huge bonus to have. It's great part-time work, and it's a foot in the door. Every year I see regular customers return, I get to meet new people and learn new things." <p>Though working for a large firm is a great way of earning extra money and gaining experience, the advantages do not end there. Many people who go through the tax courses offered by big companies eventually find lucrative work as independent tax specialists such as 17-year tax veteran Rolf Semprebon, who got his start in tax preparation working for the IRS. <p>Most of Semprebon's work load happens within a two or three month period, leaving him free to work about 15 to 20 hours per week for the rest of the year; this gives him the flexibility to pursue other interests such as art, music and radio. <p>"I work from home out of my basement, and I do a lot of work for artists and musicians," Semprebon says. "After working for H&R; Block for a while I realized that I wanted to work for myself. It's a good job to have if you've got an artistic temperament because you have a lot of free time, but you may need to work someplace else too." <p class="dtlcomment">YAHOO!
