study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a distinct class of porphyrin derivatives—specifically, the 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis (3-bromopropoxyphenyl) porphyrins. Through meticulous synthetic methodologies, these derivatives are crafted, strategically incorporating bromopropoxyphenyl moieties at distinct positions within the porphyrin framework. This research aims to unravel the structural intricacies and explore the potential applications of these compounds through a detailed characterization utilizing advanced analytical techniques. 5, 10, 15, 20, tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin was synthesized by treating pyrrole and p- hydroxylbenzaldehyde. 5, 10, 15, 20, tetrakis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) was converted into 5, 10, 15, 20, tetrakis (4-bromoalkoxyphenyl) porphyrin. 5,10,15, 20-Tetrakis -(4-bromoalkoxyphenyl) porphyrin was treated with Isopropyl phenol, para-Aminophenol, hydroquinone, 2-Naphthol, 1-Naphthol and Hydroquinone and different derivatives of ether-linked were obtained. The synthesized compounds were analyzed using contemporary spectroscopic techniques like UV-Vis, NMR and Mass spectrometry. The synthesized compounds were also tested for their biological activities like antioxidants and anti-inflammatory. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tetraphenyl%20porphyrin" title="tetraphenyl porphyrin">tetraphenyl porphyrin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NMR" title=" NMR"> NMR</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antioxidant" title=" antioxidant"> antioxidant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anti-inflammatory" title=" anti-inflammatory"> anti-inflammatory</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/192685/synthesis-characterization-antioxidant-and-anti-inflammatory-studies-of-modern-synthetic-tetra-phenyl-porphyrin-derivatives" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/192685.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">16</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11</span> Towards Development of a Framework for Saudi Education Software Ecosystem</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fazal-e-Amin">Fazal-e-Amin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdullah%20S.%20Alghamdi"> Abdullah S. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize the genotype of <em>E. granulosus</em> isolated from cattle using 12S rRNA and Cytochrome oxidase 1 (COX 1) genes. A total of 43 hydatid cyst samples were collected from 390 examined cattle samples derived from slaughterhouses. Among them, three cysts were fertile. Genomic DNA was extracted from germinal membrane and/or protoscoleces followed by PCR amplification of mitochondrial 12S rRNA and Cytochrome oxidase 1 gene fragments. The sequence data revealed existence of G1 (64.28%) and possible G3 (21.43%) genotypes for the first time in Bangladesh. The study indicates that common sheep strain G1 is the dominant subtype of <em>E. granulosus</em> in Chittagong region of Bangladesh. This will increase our understanding of the epidemiology of hydatidosis in the southern part of the country and will be useful to plan suitable control measures in the long run. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Echinococcus%20granulosus" title="Echinococcus granulosus">Echinococcus granulosus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cox1" title=" Cox1"> Cox1</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=12S%20rRNA" title=" 12S rRNA"> 12S rRNA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=molecular%20characterization" title=" molecular characterization"> molecular characterization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bangladesh" title=" Bangladesh"> Bangladesh</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59060/molecular-characterization-of-echinococcus-granulosus-through-amplification-of-12s-rrna-gene-and-cox1-gene-fragments-from-cattle-in-chittagong-bangladesh" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59060.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">344</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">9</span> External Sector and Its Impact on Economic Growth of Pakistan (1990-2010)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rizwan%20Fazal">Rizwan Fazal</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study investigates the behavior of external sector of Pakistan economy and its impact on economic growth, using quarterly data for the period 1990:01-2010:04. External sector indices used in this study are financial integration, net foreign assets and trade integration. Augmented Ducky fuller confirms that all variables of external sector are non-stationary at level, but at first difference it becomes stationary. The co-integration test suggests one co-integrating variables in the study. The analysis is based on Vector Auto Regression model followed by Vector Error Correction Model. The empirical findings show that financial integration play important role in increasing economic growth in Pakistan economy while trade integration has negative effect on economic growth of Pakistan in the long run. However, the short run confirms that output lag accounts for error correction. We investigated the association of miR-146a rs2910164 G/C polymorphism with the risk of BC in the Pakistani population. The miR-146a rs2910164 polymorphism was genotyped in 300 BC-cases and 300 age- and gender-matched healthy controls using T-ARMS-PCR. Genotype and allele frequencies were calculated, and the association between genotypes and the risk of BC was calculated by odds ratios (OR) and confidence intervals (95%). A significant difference in genotypic frequencies (χ2=63.10; p ≤ 0.0001) and allelic frequencies (OR=0.3955 (0.3132-0.4993); p ≤ 0.0001) was observed between cases and controls. Furthermore, we also found that miR-146 rs2910164 CC homozygote increased the risk of breast cancer in the dominant (OR=0.2397 (0.1629-0.3526); p=0.0001; GG vs GC+CC) and recessive (OR=2.803 (1.865- 4.213); P ≤ 0.0001; CC vs GC+GG) inheritance models. In summary, miR-146a rs2910164 G/C is significantly associated with BC in the Pakistani population. To our knowledge, this is the first study that assessed MIR146a rs2910164 G > C SNP in Pakistani population. By analyzing the secondary structure of MIR146A variant, a significant structural modification was noted. Study with a larger sample size is needed to further confirm these findings. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=breast%20cancer" title="breast cancer">breast cancer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MIR146A" title=" MIR146A"> MIR146A</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microRNA" title=" microRNA"> microRNA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SNP" title=" SNP"> SNP</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/106333/association-of-mir146a-rs2910164-variation-with-a-predisposition-to-sporadic-breast-cancer-in-a-pakistani-cohort" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/106333.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">136</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> In vitro Assessment of Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea) Seedlings Growth and Proline Production under Salt Stress</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amir%20Wahid">Amir Wahid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fazal%20Hadi"> Fazal Hadi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amin%20Ullah%20Jan"> Amin Ullah Jan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Tomato and Cauliflower seedlings were grown in-vitro under salt concentrations (0, 2, 4, 8, and 10 dSm-1) with objectives to investigate; (1) The effect of salinity on seedling growth and free proline production, (2) the correlation between seedling growth and proline contents, (3) comparative salt tolerance of both species. Different concentrations of salt showed considerable effect on percent (%) germination of seeds, length and biomass of shoot and root and also showed effect on percent water content of both plants seedlings. Germination rate in cauliflower was two times higher than tomato even at highest salt concentration (10 dSm-1). Seedling growth of both species was less effected at low salt concentrations (2 and 4 dSm-1) but at high concentrations (6 and 8 dSm-1) the seedling growth of both species was significantly decreased. Particularly the tomato root was highly significantly reduced. The proline level linearly increased in both species with increasing salt concentrations up-to 4 dSm-1 and then declined. The cauliflower showed higher free proline level than tomato under all salt treatments. Overall, the cauliflower seedlings showed better growth response along with higher proline contents on comparison with tomato seedlings. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NaCl%20%28Sodium%20Chloride%29" title="NaCl (Sodium Chloride)">NaCl (Sodium Chloride)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EC%20%28Electrical%20Conductivity%29" title=" EC (Electrical Conductivity)"> EC (Electrical Conductivity)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MS%20%28Murashig%20and%20Skoog%29" title=" MS (Murashig and Skoog)"> MS (Murashig and Skoog)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ANOVA%20%28Analysis%20of%20Variance%29" title=" ANOVA (Analysis of Variance)"> ANOVA (Analysis of Variance)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LSD%20%28Least%20Significant%20Differences%29" title=" LSD (Least Significant Differences)"> LSD (Least Significant Differences)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16523/in-vitro-assessment-of-tomato-lycopersicon-esculentum-and-cauliflower-brassica-oleracea-seedlings-growth-and-proline-production-under-salt-stress" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16523.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">556</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Study on the Incidence of Chikungunya Infection in Swat Region</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nasib%20Zaman">Nasib Zaman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maneesha%20Kour"> Maneesha Kour</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Muhammad%20Rizwan"> Muhammad Rizwan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fazal%20Akbar"> Fazal Akbar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Abstract: Chikungunya fever is a re-emerging rapidly spreading mosquito-borne disease cause by Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquito vectors. In present study, postmortem examination of Chinkara deer (n=25) was conducted in year 2014. Pus samples suggestive of CL were collected from the superficial lymph nodes, liver, spleen and lungs during necropsy and subjected to standard microbiological procedures for isolation and molecular analysis of bacterial pathogens. Pus samples collected from carcasses (25) presenting clinical lesions of C. pseudotuberculosis infection was identified in 19 (76%) carcasses on the basis of culture characteristics. The frequency of C. pseudotuberculosis bacterium was higher in older animals as compared to young animals. Grossly, multiple tubercles of variable size having caseous material were observed in liver, lungs, spleen and lymph nodes. Histopathologically, tissue sections from all the visceral organs were extensively plugged with abscess. In present study specific prolineiminopeptidase (PIP) gene of the C. pseudotuberculosis was amplified by the Polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR) in 17(25) cases. The efficient and reliable molecular analysis along with necropsy findings in present study can be used as valuable approach for diagnosis of caseous lymphadenitis in small ruminants. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinkara%20deer" title="Chinkara deer">Chinkara deer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Corynebacterium%20pseudotuberculosis" title=" Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis"> Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Caseous%20lymphadenitis" title=" Caseous lymphadenitis"> Caseous lymphadenitis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PCR" title=" PCR"> PCR</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24616/pathological-and-molecular-diagnosis-of-caseous-lymphadenitis-in-chinkara-deer-gazella-bennettii-in-pakistan" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24616.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">482</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> S. Pollinators not only increase crop yield but also improve quality of produce as well. The present investigation is therefore, an endeavor to assess the visitation pattern of honeybees, Apis florea (Hymenopterae: Apidae) in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). The current research trial was carried out at New Developmental Farm (NDF), The University of Agriculture Peshawar, (34.01° N, 71.53° E) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Pakistan during 2012 and 2013. Different observations on the foraging behavior of A. florea’s individuals were made from 0800 hr in the morning and continued until 1800 hr in the evening. Hence, total duration of foraging activity of A. florea individuals was comprised of 10 hours. It was found that two peaks of visitation/foraging occurred between 1400 to 1600 hr of the day. First peak of foraging was recorded at 1600hr, where 15 individuals of honeybees/3 m2 were counted to be engaged in foraging sunflower blooms. Second peak visitation was recorded with a total of 12 bees/3 m2 at 1400 hrs of the day. Visitations of A. florea were observed to its minimum intensity of only 07 individuals during late hours of the day as evening approached after 1800 hrs. Similarly, due to more number of pollens and nectars on flowers, high frequency of A. florea were found engaged in foraging during 20th and 25th day after initiation of blooms on sunflower. Minimum numbers of honeybees were recorded during initial and very last days of flowering due to less number of plants with blooms and less availability of pollen and nectar on flowers. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=apis%20florea" title="apis florea">apis florea</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=days%20after%20flowering" title=" days after flowering"> days after flowering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=daily%20hours" title=" daily hours"> daily hours</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sunflower" title=" sunflower"> sunflower</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visitation%20pattern" title=" visitation pattern "> visitation pattern </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40011/s-s-l-andrade-e-a-souza-l-c-l-santos-c-moraes-a-k-c-l-lobato" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40011.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">636</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Organotin (IV) Based Complexes as Promiscuous Antibacterials: Synthesis in vitro, in Silico Pharmacokinetic, and Docking Studies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wajid%20Rehman">Wajid Rehman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sirajul%20Haq"> Sirajul Haq</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bakhtiar%20Muhammad"> Bakhtiar Muhammad</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Syed%20Fahad%20Hassan"> Syed Fahad Hassan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amin%20Badshah"> Amin Badshah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Muhammad%20Waseem"> Muhammad Waseem</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fazal%20Rahim"> Fazal Rahim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Obaid-Ur-Rahman%20Abid"> Obaid-Ur-Rahman Abid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Farzana%20Latif%20Ansari"> Farzana Latif Ansari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Umer%20Rashid"> Umer Rashid</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Five novel triorganotin (IV) compounds have been synthesized and characterized. The tin atom is penta-coordinated to assume trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. Using in silico derived parameters; the objective of our study is to design and synthesize promiscuous antibacterials potent enough to combat resistance. Among various synthesized organotin (IV) complexes, compound 5 was found as potent antibacterial agent against various bacterial strains. Further lead optimization of drug-like properties was evaluated through in silico predictions. Data mining and computational analysis were utilized to derive compound promiscuity phenomenon to avoid drug attrition rate in designing antibacterials. Xanthine oxidase and human glucose- 6-phosphatase were found as only true positive off-target hits by ChEMBL database and others utilizing similarity ensemble approach. Propensity towards a-3 receptor, human macrophage migration factor and thiazolidinedione were found as false positive off targets with E-value 1/4> 10^-4 for compound 1, 3, and 4. Further, displaying positive drug-drug interaction of compound 1 as uricosuric was validated by all databases and docked protein targets with sequence similarity and compositional matrix alignment via BLAST software. Promiscuity of the compound 5 was further confirmed by in silico binding to different antibacterial targets. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antibacterial%20activity" title="antibacterial activity">antibacterial activity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=drug%20promiscuity" title=" drug promiscuity"> drug promiscuity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ADMET%20prediction" title=" ADMET prediction"> ADMET prediction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metallo-pharmaceutical" title=" metallo-pharmaceutical"> metallo-pharmaceutical</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antimicrobial%20resistance" title=" antimicrobial resistance"> antimicrobial resistance</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17900/organotin-iv-based-complexes-as-promiscuous-antibacterials-synthesis-in-vitro-in-silico-pharmacokinetic-and-docking-studies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17900.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">504</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Natural Gas Flow Optimization Using Pressure Profiling and Isolation Techniques</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Syed%20Tahir%20Shah">Syed Tahir Shah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fazal%20Muhammad"> Fazal Muhammad</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Syed%20Kashif%20Shah"> Syed Kashif Shah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maleeha%20Gul"> Maleeha Gul</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In recent days, natural gas has become a relatively clean and quality source of energy, which is recovered from deep wells by expensive drilling activities. The recovered substance is purified by processing in multiple stages to remove the unwanted/containments like dust, dirt, crude oil and other particles. Mostly, gas utilities are concerned with essential objectives of quantity/quality of natural gas delivery, financial outcome and safe natural gas volumetric inventory in the transmission gas pipeline. Gas quantity and quality are primarily related to standards / advanced metering procedures in processing units/transmission systems, and the financial outcome is defined by purchasing and selling gas also the operational cost of the transmission pipeline. SNGPL (Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited) Pakistan has a wide range of diameters of natural gas transmission pipelines network of over 9125 km. This research results in answer a few of the issues in accuracy/metering procedures via multiple advanced gadgets for gas flow attributes after being utilized in the transmission system and research. The effects of good pressure management in transmission gas pipeline network in contemplation to boost the gas volume deposited in the existing network and finally curbing gas losses UFG (Unaccounted for gas) for financial benefits. Furthermore, depending on the results and their observation, it is directed to enhance the maximum allowable working/operating pressure (MAOP) of the system to 1235 PSIG from the current round about 900 PSIG, such that the capacity of the network could be entirely utilized. In gross, the results depict that the current model is very efficient and provides excellent results in the minimum possible time. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=natural%20gas" title="natural gas">natural gas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pipeline%20network" title=" pipeline network"> pipeline network</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UFG" title=" UFG"> UFG</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transmission%20pack" title=" transmission pack"> transmission pack</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=AGA" title=" AGA"> AGA</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/172999/natural-gas-flow-optimization-using-pressure-profiling-and-isolation-techniques" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/172999.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">95</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> Human-Carnivore Interaction: Patterns, Causes and Perceptions of Local Herders of Hoper Valley in Central Karakoram National Park, Pakistan</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saeed%20Abbas">Saeed Abbas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rahilla%20Tabassum"> Rahilla Tabassum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Haider%20Abbas"> Haider Abbas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Babar%20Khan"> Babar Khan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shahid%20Hussain"> Shahid Hussain</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Muhammad%20Zafar%20Khan"> Muhammad Zafar Khan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fazal%20Karim"> Fazal Karim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yawar%20Abbas"> Yawar Abbas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rizwan%20Karim"> Rizwan Karim</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Human–carnivore conflict is considered to be a major conservation and rural livelihood concern because many carnivore species have been heavily victimized due to elevated conflict levels with communities. Like other snow leopard range countries, this situation prevails in Pakistan, where WWF is currently working under Asia High Mountain Project (AHMP) in Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan. To mitigate such conflicts requires a firm understanding of grazing and predation pattern including human-carnivore interaction. For this purpose we conducted a survey in Hoper valley (one of the AHMP project sites in Pakistan), during August, 2013 through a questionnaire based survey and unstructured interviews covering 647 households, permanently residing in the project area out of the total 900 households. The valley, spread over 409 km2 between 36°7'46" N and 74°49'2"E, at 2900m asl in Karakoram ranges is considered to be one of an important habitat of snow leopard and associated prey species such as Himalayan ibex. The valley is home of 8100 Brusho people (ancient tribe of Northern Pakistan) dependent on agro-pastoral livelihoods including farming and livestock rearing. The total number of livestock reported were (N=15,481) out of which 8346 (53.91%) were sheep, 3546 (22.91%) goats, 2193 (14.16%) cows, 903 (5.83%) yaks, 508 (3.28%) bulls, 28 (0.18%) donkeys, 27 (0.17%) zo/zomo (cross breed of yak and cow), and 4 (0.03%) horses. 83 percent respondent (n=542 households) confirmed loss of their livestock during the last one year July, 2012 to June, 2013 which account for 2246 (14.51%) animals. The major reason of livestock loss include predation by large carnivores such as snow leopards and wolf (1710, 76.14%) followed by diseases (536, 23.86%). Of the total predation cases snow leopard is suspected to kill 1478 animals (86.43%). Among livestock sheep were found to be the major prey of snow leopard (810, 55%) followed by goats (484, 32.7%) cows (151, 10.21%), yaks (15, 1.015%), zo/zomo (7, 0.5%) and donkey (1, 0.07%). The reason for the mass depredation of sheep and goats is that they tend to browse on twigs of bushes and graze on soft grass near cliffs. They are also considered to be very active as compared to other species in moving quickly and covering more grazing area. This makes them more vulnerable to snow leopard attack. The majority (1283, 75%) of livestock killed by predators occurred during the warm season (May-September) in alpine and sub-alpine pastures and remaining (427, 25%) occurred in the winter season near settlements in valley. It was evident from the recent study that Snow leopard kills outside the pen were (1351, 79.76%) as compared to inside pen (359, 20.24%). Assessing the economic loss of livestock predation we found that the total loss of livestock predation in the study area is equal to PKR 11,230,000 (USD 105,797), which is about PRK 17, 357 (USD 163.51) per household per year. Economic loss incurred by the locals due to predation is quite significant where the average cash income per household per year is PKR 85,000 (USD 800.75). <p
