Before starting the program, Anne worked at Morgan Stanley as an Investment Banking Analyst. During her studies, Anne spent her first summer at Partners Group, a private equity firm; her second summer at the Department of Justice in the Criminal Division, Fraud Section; and her third summer at Covington & Burling LLP, a law firm. After graduating, Anne clerked for Judge Harry T. Edwards of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She is now an Assistant Attorney General at the Office of the Solicitor General for the District of Columbia. Here, she highlights experiences unique to JD/MBA students.</em></p> <p><strong>Why Pursue a Joint Degree Program?</strong></p> <p>JD/MBA programs are ideal for those with varied interests wishing to explore career paths in both business and law, and Harvard’s program in particular is unparalleled. One distinctive feature of Harvard’s joint degree program is the integration of the Harvard Business School (HBS) and Harvard Law School (HLS) experiences. In the third and fourth years, joint degree students take classes at both schools, benefit from double the career resources, and enjoy both schools’ extracurricular and social activities. In addition, JD/MBA students have their own community and alumni network.</p> <p>I sometimes have been asked whether I missed out on anything by doing a joint degree rather than focusing on just one school. Put simply, there is no class, activity, or extracurricular that is closed off to JD/MBAs. Rather, the challenge is having an abundance of choices. Each school is designed to be a full experience in itself, so being at two schools necessitates making trade-offs. However, I appreciated that having all these options available pushed me to be intentional with how I spent my four years in the program.</p> <p><strong>JD/MBA Program: A Blend of Law and Business </strong></p> <p>Harvard’s JD/MBA program spans four years. In the first two years, JD/MBA students complete one year at Harvard Business School (HBS) and one year at Harvard Law School (HLS), with the option to start at either school. I decided to begin at HBS, and then completed my second year at HLS. I liked this order because it meant I could graduate with my original HLS classmates and meet three different cohorts at HBS. The classes during these first two years are mostly mandatory, as all business or law students follow a specific curriculum. In the third and fourth years of the program, JD/MBA students take elective classes at both HBS and HLS and can also cross-register at the other schools at Harvard. </p> <p><strong>Taking Classes at Both Schools</strong></p> <p>Rather than requiring students to take all law or all business classes in a given semester like some JD/MBA programs, Harvard’s program encourages JD/MBAs to take a mix of elective classes from both schools in their third and fourth years. For example, in my third year, I took a management class and a business ethics class at HBS while also enrolling in an evidence class and an administrative law class at HLS. Additionally, I completed the JD/MBA seminar that all JD/MBA students take during the third or fourth year of their program. </p> <p>The JD/MBA seminar is a student-driven course that functions as a capstone experience at the end of the joint degree program. In this yearlong seminar, each student picks a topic of interest to research and then presents his or her thesis for an hour while fielding tough questions from the class. Students often treat the seminar as an opportunity to pursue and get feedback on an idea that they have started to develop during their time in the program. For instance, when I took the seminar, my classmates presented: start-up ideas; academic research about legal doctrines; novel investment theses; case studies about companies they planned to work at; and various social, political, and economic issues, and the laws that the government should adopt or the actions that businesses should take to address them.</p> <p>As a joint degree student, I learned how to engage different parts of my brain—HLS tends to be heavier on reading and writing, and HBS tends to focus more on quantitative analysis and in-class participation. Each school also has its own culture academically and socially, and being plugged into both provided a nice change in rhythm to my experience. I enjoyed taking classes at both schools each semester…and got good exercise running back and forth across the Charles River!</p> <p><strong>Career Exploration</strong></p> <p>The JD/MBA program is designed so that all the required credits can be completed during the fall and spring semesters, leaving the three summers free for internships. The majority of students will explore at least one business-related internship and one law-related internship. Because JD/MBA students enjoy full access to the wealth of career recourses offered by HBS and HLS, it is extremely easy to recruit at both schools and to receive resume and interview guidance from both career services offices.</p> <p>During my time in the program, I interned at a private equity firm, at the Department of Justice, and at a law firm in Washington D.C. Having three summers to explore different career paths helped me better understand my own interests and aspirations. I also benefited greatly from the mentorship I received from my professors, a couple of whom actively helped me navigate my career change from finance to law and advocated for me during the job search process. I continue to benefit greatly from their guidance and support. Finally, as a new graduate entering the legal profession, I still rely heavily on the abundant resources offered by HLS’s Office of Career Services and even just recently received valuable advice from them regarding my career plans.</p> <p><strong>Student Cohort and Alumni Network</strong></p> <p>The JD/MBA cohort is a tight-knit community, and consists of some of the most interesting, talented, passionate, and eclectic people I have ever met. Getting to know the diverse JD/MBA cohort has been one of the highlights of the program for me. We had frequent gatherings, including happy hours, brunches and dinners, holiday parties, and the annual New York City trek.
