that this is only the second blog post since we all decided to start WPAustralia.org but you’ve all been amazing and have created fantastic conversations on the forums, made new friends and hopefully learnt more about WordPress! Not only that but many of you have contributed code and plugins back to WPAustralia.org to help us fix bugs along the way. We still have a long way to go in terms of bugs and plugins but we’re getting there.</p> <p>One of the biggest issues is spammy signups. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130116003208/http://www.wpaustralia.org/members/japh/" rel="nofollow">@Japh</a> and I came up with a basic honeypot plugin that did the trick to block spam for around 4 days then the spammers started getting through again. I am planning to dig my teeth into rewriting that honeypot plugin and also try to use Akismet to filter the signups as well and hopefully come up with something that’s good enough to contribute back to BuddyPress to help with this ongoing problem.</p> <h2>What’s happened on our site in 8 weeks since we decided to give birth to WPAustralia.org?</h2> <ul> <li>We have<strong> 71 legitimate members</strong> from the Australian WordPress community! (This is a pretty small number compared to the number of members we have in our Meetup groups all over Australia so we need to recruit more members! <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130116003208im_/http://www.wpaustralia.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" class="wp-smiley"/> )</li> <li>We’ve closed <strong>36 issues</strong> on out <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130116003208/https://github.com/BronsonQuick/wpaustralia/issues?page=1&state=closed" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','https://web.archive.org/web/20130116003208/http://github.com']);">Github repository</a> for this project! Some of those issues have resulted in patches and pull requests to other WordPress plugin repositories. That means we’ve not only fixed the bugs on our site, we’ve actually fixed the bugs for WordPress users all over the world <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130116003208im_/http://www.wpaustralia.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" class="wp-smiley"/> <strong>You guys rock!</strong></li> <li>We’ve had <strong>5 plugins created </strong>by our members. Some of those plugins were created purely for this site, other plugins were submitted to the forums for feedback and some have been released into the wild. Compared to America we have a very small population and we have a massive continent, so we need to share knowledge nationwide and I’m glad to see that we’ve been embracing this so far and it’s stil only early days!</div> <div></div> <h2>What’s next for WPAustralia.org?</h2> <p>I have talked to some of the members of our community and they’ve agreed with me that we need to fix a few more bugs then we can actually start on the design of the site! The plan of attack for the design of the site will be firstly starting a thread in the forums about it and asking for people to contribute ideas and wire frames for the site. Once we’ve reached a common consensus of the layout of the main pages then we can all start work on the design the site.
