<span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>and I have<MH1961> oxen<MH7794>, donkeys<MH2543>, flocks<MH6629>, and male<MH5650> and female<MH8198> servants<MH5650, 8198>; and I have sent<MH7971> <i>messengers</i> to tell<MH5046> my lord<MH113>, so that I may find<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in your sight<MH5869>.”’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the messengers<MH4397> returned<MH7725> to Jacob<MH3290>, saying<MH559>, “We came<MH935> to your brother<MH251> Esau<MH6215>, and furthermore<MH1571> he is coming<MH1980> to meet<MH7122> you, and four<MH702> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> are with him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then Jacob<MH3290> was<MH3372a> greatly<MH3966> afraid<MH3372a> and distressed<MH6887a>; and he divided<MH2673> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were with him, and the flocks<MH6629>, the herds<MH1241>, and the camels<MH1581>, into two<MH8147> companies<MH4264>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>for he said<MH559>, “If<MH518> Esau<MH6215> comes<MH935> to the one<MH259> company<MH4264> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>attacks<MH5221> it, then the company<MH4264> which is left<MH7604> will escape<MH6413>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then Jacob<MH3290> said<MH559>, “God<MH430> of my father<MH1> Abraham<MH85> and God<MH430> of my father<MH1> Isaac<MH3327>, LORD<MH3068>, who said<MH559> to me, ‘Return<MH7725> to your country<MH776> and to your relatives<MH4138>, and I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>make<MH3190> you prosper<MH3190>,’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>I am<MH6994> unworthy<MH6994> of all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>favor<MH2617a> and of all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>faithfulness<MH571>, which<MH834> You have shown<MH6213a> to Your servant<MH5650>; for with <i>only</i> my staff<MH4731> I crossed<MH5674a> this<MH2088> Jordan<MH3383>, and now<MH6258> I have become<MH1961> two<MH8147> companies<MH4264>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Save<MH5337> me, please<MH4994>, from the hand<MH3027> of my brother<MH251>, from the hand<MH3027> of Esau<MH6215>; for I fear<MH3372a> him, that he will come<MH935> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>attack<MH5221> me <i>and</i> the mothers<MH517> with the children<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>For You said<MH559>, ‘I will assuredly<MH3190> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>make<MH3190> you prosper<MH3190> and make<MH7760> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> as the sand<MH2344> of the sea<MH3220>, which<MH834> is too<MH4480> great<MH7230> to be counted<MH5608>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So he spent<MH3885a> the night<MH3915> there<MH8033>. Then he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>selected<MH3947> from what <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>he had<MH935> with him a gift<MH4503> for his brother<MH251> Esau<MH6215>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>two hundred<MH3967> female<MH5795> goats<MH5795> and twenty<MH6242> male<MH8495> goats<MH8495>, two hundred<MH3967> ewes<MH7353> and twenty<MH6242> rams<MH352a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>thirty<MH7970> milking<MH3243> camels<MH1581> and their colts<MH1121>, forty<MH705> cows<MH6510> and ten<MH6235> bulls<MH6499>, <i>and</i> twenty<MH6242> female<MH860> donkeys<MH860> and ten<MH6235> male<MH5895> donkeys<MH5895>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then he placed<MH5414> <i>them</i> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>care<MH3027> of his servants<MH5650>, every<MH5739> flock<MH5739> by itself<MH905>, and said<MH559> to his servants<MH5650>, “Pass<MH5674a> on<MH5674a> ahead<MH6440> of me, and put<MH7760> a space<MH7305> between<MH996> flocks<MH5739>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And he commanded<MH6680> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>one<MH7223> in<MH7223> front<MH7223>, saying<MH559>, “When<MH3588> my brother<MH251> Esau<MH6215> meets<MH6298> you and asks<MH7592> you, saying<MH559>, ‘To whom<MH4310> do you belong, and where<MH575> are you going<MH1980>, and to whom<MH4310> do these<MH428> <i>animals</i> in front<MH6440> of you belong?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>then you shall say<MH559>, ‘<i>These</i> belong to your servant<MH5650> Jacob<MH3290>; it is a gift<MH4503> sent<MH7971> to my lord<MH113> Esau<MH6215>. And behold<MH2009>, he also<MH1571> is behind<MH310> us.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then he commanded<MH6680> also<MH1571> the second<MH8145> and the third<MH7992>, and all<MH3605> those who followed<MH1980, 310> the flocks<MH5739>, saying<MH559>, “In this<MH2088> way<MH1697> you shall speak<MH1696> to Esau<MH6215> when you find<MH4672> him; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and you shall say<MH559>, ‘Behold<MH2009>, your servant<MH5650> Jacob<MH3290> also<MH1571> is behind<MH310> us.’” For he said<MH559>, “I will appease<MH3722a, 6440> him with the gift<MH4503> that goes<MH1980> ahead<MH6440> of me. Then afterward<MH310, 3651> I will see<MH7200> his face<MH6440>; perhaps<MH194> he will accept<MH5375, 6440> me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So the gift<MH4503> passed<MH5674a> on<MH5674a> ahead<MH5921, 6440> of him, while he himself<MH1931> spent<MH3885a> that night<MH3915> in the camp<MH4264>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now he got<MH6965> up<MH6965> that same<MH1931> night<MH3915> and took<MH3947> his two<MH8147> wives<MH802>, his two<MH8147> female<MH8198> slaves<MH8198>, and his eleven<MH259, 6240> children<MH3206>, and crossed<MH5674a> the shallow<MH4569a> place<MH4569a> of the Jabbok<MH2999>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/32-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>He took<MH3947> them and sent<MH5674a> them across<MH5674a> the stream<MH5158a>.
