Instead, the term "candle" in many English translations of the Bible often refers to oil lamps, which were the primary source of artificial light in ancient Near Eastern households. These lamps were typically made of clay and fueled by olive oil, providing a steady flame for illumination.

Biblical References:

1. Symbol of Light and Guidance:
The imagery of a candle or lamp is frequently used in Scripture to symbolize light, guidance, and the presence of God. In Psalm 119:105, the psalmist declares, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" . This verse highlights the role of God's Word as a guiding light in the believer's life, providing direction and clarity in a world often shrouded in darkness.

2. Representation of Life and Spirit:
The candle or lamp also represents life and the human spirit. Proverbs 20:27 states, "The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching out his inmost being" . Here, the lamp signifies the divine spark within humans, illuminating their innermost thoughts and intentions under God's scrutiny.

3. Metaphor for Witness and Testimony:
Jesus uses the metaphor of a lamp to teach about the visibility and impact of a believer's witness. In Matthew 5:14-16, He instructs, "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house" . This passage emphasizes the importance of living out one's faith openly and boldly, serving as a beacon of truth and hope to others.

4. Judgment and Revelation:
The imagery of a lamp is also associated with judgment and revelation. In Revelation 2:5, the risen Christ warns the church in Ephesus, "Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and perform the deeds you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent" . The lampstand here symbolizes the church's witness and presence, which can be removed if they fail to remain faithful.

Cultural and Historical Context:

In the ancient world, the absence of modern lighting made lamps essential for daily life. They were used in homes, temples, and public spaces to provide light after sunset. The simplicity and necessity of lamps made them a powerful symbol in biblical literature, representing not only physical light but also spiritual enlightenment and divine presence.

Theological Significance:

The use of candle or lamp imagery in the Bible underscores the theme of light as a divine attribute and a gift to humanity. It serves as a reminder of God's guidance, the illuminating power of His Word, and the responsibility of believers to reflect His light in a darkened world. The metaphor extends to the church's mission, calling Christians to be visible and active in their faith, shining brightly in their communities and beyond.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Hebrews ner, Job 18:6; 29:3; Psalm 18:28; Proverbs 24:20, in all which places the Revised Version and margin of Authorized Version have "lamp," by which the word is elsewhere frequently rendered. In all places except Jeremiah 25:10 and Zephaniah 1:12 (see margin) the Revised Version (British and American) gives the more exact rendering "lamp." See LAMP. Candle, in our sense of the term, was unknown to antiquity.

(2) "Candlestick" stands for what was a common and indispensable article of ancient house furniture, a lamp-stand (menorah). Accordingly we find it mentioned in a case thoroughly representative of the furnishings of an oriental room of the plainer sort, in the account of "the prophet's chamber" given in 2 Kings 4:10. Here we find that the furniture consisted of a "bed," a "table," a "seat," and a "candlestick," or lamp-stand. The excavations of Petrie and Bliss at Lachish (Tell el-Hesy, 104), not to mention others, help to make it clear that a lamp-stand is meant in passages where the Hebrew word, menorah, or its Greek equivalent luchnia, is used. Accordingly throughout the New Testament, the Revised Version (British and American) has consistently rendered luchnia by "stand" (Matthew 5:15 Mark 4:21 Luke 8:16; Luke 11:33).

(3) The "candlestick" of Daniel 5:5 is rather the candelabrum (nebhrashta') of Belshazzar's banqueting-hall. The ancient and still common custom of the East of keeping a house lamp burning night and day gave rise to the figure of speech so universally found in oriental languages by which the continued prosperity of the individual or the family is set forth by the perennially burning lamp (see Job 29:3; "when his lamp shined upon my head"; Psalm 18:28 "Thou wilt light my lamp"). The converse in usage is seen in many passages-(see Job 18:6; "His lamp above him shall be put out"; 21:17: "How oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out"; Proverbs 24:20; "The lamp of the wicked shall be put out"; Jeremiah 25:10; "Take from them. the light of the lamp"). The same metaphor is used in Revelation 2:5 to indicate the judgment with candlestick out of its place." "The seven golden candlesticks" (Revelation 1:20) which John saw were "the seven churches," the appointed light-bearers and dispensers of the religion of the risen Christ.
