The OECD&#8217;s study Nº.158 titled ‘’Promoting Diverse Career Pathways For Doctoral And Postdoctoral Researchers’’ revealed limited career support for early-career researchers (ECRs), with few resources directed toward diverse career paths for PhD and postdoctoral researchers. This gap leaves many ECRs facing job instability, often working in short-term or grant-dependent roles without a clear long-term trajectory. In addition, the &#8220;publish or perish&#8221; culture pressures ECRs to prioritize publication volume over research quality.<br />Supporting early-career researchers (ECRs) requires a multifaceted approach to address both immediate professional needs and broader systemic challenges.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />The Re-shape Next Generation Academia community aim to bridge ECRs and a broader range of professional opportunities. Through networking and shared resources, this community encourages collaboration across academia and external sectors, offering an online hub for events, skill-building, and career development activities that help ECRs build resilience and broaden their career options within and beyond academia. By implementing these approaches, academia can create a more supportive environment that recognizes the value of early-career researchers and empowers them to succeed in different career trajectories.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />Q. <strong>Can any PHD be part of this community and what benefits would gain by getting involved in your community?</strong></p> <p>A. Definitely yes! In fact, it is not only over for current PhD candidates but to master and postdoc profiles too! We want to focus on the early researcher figure as the person who is starting their academic career. We are still figuring out our own approach. This is about:</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p style="padding-left: 40px;"><!-- wp:paragraph -->1) Topic wise, as we can address specific activities focused on a specific research field or transversal as we all are starting our academic careers.<br />2) Geographical focus, we can organize activities in collaboration with our correspondent Doctorate Department with a focus on the university itself.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />Additionally, a national level could be interesting in order to foster the collaboration with other universities in each partners’ country. Lastly, activities organized in collaboration between different EELISA universities or additional international universities are expected to be implement. We all know how hard these early steps in an academic career can be. Each of us have different needs and we are doing our research on different fields, but it is key to have a place to go in case you have any doubt or request for help.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />This is what this community was for and this is the main added value we can provide to our colleagues in other EELISA universities. A space where you can benefit from the networking side for congresses or research lines, in order to know who is studying the same field in other universities from this alliance, organization and participation in activities sometimes required by the department or even just to improve your soft skills such as communication or management.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />Q. <strong>Why do you think is important to stay connected as a PHD and collaborate internationally? </strong></p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph -->A. Staying connected and collaborating internationally as a PhD candidate is crucial for enhancing research quality, expanding professional networks, and addressing global challenges. Such collaborations expose researchers to diverse perspectives and methodologies, which can lead to innovative solutions and more impactful research outcomes, often reflected in higher citation rates for co-authored papers across borders. Additionally, pooling resources and expertise fosters successful project outcomes, while networking with international peers opens doors to career advancement opportunities and funding. Overall, these collaborations enrich the academic experience and contribute to tackling complex issues that require a collective approach.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />Q. <strong>What role does interdisciplinarity play in your community?<br /></strong></p> <p>A. Diversity enriches ecosystems, which is why collaborating with students from different universities and research fields is essential. Each individual brings unique perspectives that add value to discussions, activities, and projects.<br />Interdisciplinarity is vital within communities like EELISA, as it drives innovation and enhances our ability to tackle complex societal challenges. By combining diverse methodologies and insights, researchers can create holistic solutions for pressing issues like climate change and health crises. This collaborative spirit not only strengthens the research process but also boosts creativity and problem-solving skills. Ultimately, fostering interdisciplinary interactions among early-career researchers cultivates fruitful partnerships and enriches the academic experience, paving the way for effective and sustainable solutions to global challenges.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />Q. <strong>What actions and achievements do you expect to reach through this EELISA Community?</strong></p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><strong><br /></strong>A. We want to offer different types of activities and services. Firstly, we want to organize specific actions for some research fields in order to boost the connectivity and knowledge sharing between the participants. Secondly, the discussion about some transversal aspects such as time management, oral communication and writing skills, pitching and so on, which are critical for an early researcher.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />Thirdly, a space to help and sharing experiences between us! For example, if I know about any robotic congress in Spain and I know someone from the network is working on that field, I will share this information with this person to help. The same way that if someone is looking to complement their studies by a research stay in any place, we can launch this question to the network and foster the collaboration in this regard.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />Lastly, the connection with relevant stakeholders not only from the academic side but beyond. We want to offer the opportunity to discuss more about the positions that the early researchers can approach. By doing this, we offer a complete overview for the student.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><br />In the short term, we are happy to announce that our proposal titled ‘’Mapping Innovative Solutions for Displaced Academic Communities: Open Science and Education in Crisis Contexts’’ was selected for this last 4th Joint Call. She manages European projects in technological innovation and entrepreneurship, such as Clean Cities Spain ClimAccelerator, a European acceleration program led by UPM and supported by EIT Climate-KIC. With a background in Biology and Business Management, Ana is pursuing a PhD focused on the collaboration between startups and public entities in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, specializing in acceleration stages. With extensive NGO experience, she bridges technology, community engagement, and policy innovation. Her work on sustainable AI has shaped policy recommendations and digital rights initiatives in Ibero-America. Thirteen projects have been selected for funding under the <a href="https://eelisa.eu/4th-eelisa-joint-call-e130000-in-funding-available/"><strong>4th Joint Call for EELISA Communities</strong></a>, supporting challenge-based learning across EELISA partners and collaborators.</span></p> <p>Following the success of past editions, this call has received a total of 20 proposals from students, staff &amp; academics from all partner universities. <p>EELISA is entering a pivotal phase as it launches its 5th year of existence and transitions from a project-based initiative to a long-term, integrated collaboration across its member institutions. To support this transition, and in line with its biannual meetings, EELISA is inviting all Rectors, Presidents, and Directors to come together, engage in discussions, and demonstrate their commitment to the Alliance’s future growth and success.</p> <p>The upcoming strategic discussions of the <strong>EELISA Governing Board</strong> will focus on engaging the leadership of EELISA’s member institutions to unlock the full potential of the Alliance. This will be an opportunity for the leaders to take stock of the outcomes from the first year of the roll-out phase, with an emphasis on the concrete achievements made and the commitments presented by Rectors, Directors, and Presidents at the last Governing Board meeting held in Erlangen, Germany.</p> <p>The meeting will also secure continued leadership support for accelerating the implementation of the Alliance and its integration within each institution. A key focus will be defining the terms of reference for establishing a Legal Entity, which will be crucial in supporting the Alliance’s operational framework and ensuring its long-term sustainability.</p> <p>At the end of the discussions, the EELISA Governing Board will release a joint statement, sponsored by the Chair of the Governing Board and co-signed by Board members. The statement will outline a common framework for attracting and nurturing talent within the EELISA network, as well as fostering excellence in research and innovation across its member institutions. This statement aims to drive a collaborative effort to create a unified approach to talent identification, development, and support, ensuring that EELISA remains at the forefront of academic and professional advancements.</p> <p><strong>A Symbolic Handover Ceremony</strong></p> <p>As established last year, every six months, the Rector, President, or Director of one of the EELISA members assumes the role of Chair of the Alliance. This is an opportunity for the institution to inspire and sponsor important topics for both the institution itself and the entire Alliance. <a href="https://www.fau.eu/fau/organisation-and-committees/executive-board/prof-dr-joachim-hornegger-president/">Joachim Hornegger</a>, President of FAU and current Chair of the EELISA Governing Board, will hand over the baton to <a href="https://www.santannapisa.it/en/sabina-nuti">Rector Sabina Nuti </a>(SSSA) and Director<a href="https://www.sns.it/en/persona/luigi-ambrosio"> Luigi Ambrosio</a> (SNS).</p> <p>Reflecting on the significance of this transition, both Rector <strong>Nuti and Director Ambrosio remark:</strong> <em>&#8220;It is a great responsibility, this half-year as chair of EELISA, because we are approaching a crucial phase. One of the workshops will focus on connecting to more European forums and leveraging the European Universities Alliances framework for organizational growth, while the other will help participants acquire effective communication skills through best practices on social media.</p> <p>Additionally, the members of the <strong>EELISA Executive Board</strong> will meet to oversee the execution of tasks and objectives, ensuring the implementation of actions towards the accomplishmet of milestones. This prestigious event showcased the innovative and transformative ideas that emerged from the program&#8217;s inaugural edition, drawing attention to the remarkable achievements of its graduates.</p> <p>Among the highlights were six groundbreaking capstone projects, each exemplifying cutting-edge advancements in the digital twin technologies sector:</p> <p>One project focused on optimizing Scan2BIM applications for the French railway infrastructure, brought to life by <strong>Víctor Aparici Godoy, Fouad Harrag, Beatriz Crespo Martín</strong>, and <strong>György Heusz</strong> under the guidance of <strong>Altametris </strong>mentors<strong> Livaï Quintard and Anis Chaarana</strong>, with coordination from <strong>Nicolas Audebert</strong> of École des Ponts ParisTech.</p> <p>Another team comprising <strong>Juan Manuel Aguado López, Borja Bergara, Salihcan Karaman, and András Nagy</strong> tackled the challenge of improving the reliability of asset data through remote multi-source measurements. This project was mentored by <strong>Maxime Gueguin and Daniel Chauveheid of Eurobios Mews Labs,</strong> with <strong>Loïc Landrieu</strong> from École nationale des ponts et chaussées overseeing the coordination.</p> <p>In a dynamic simulation-based project, <strong>Abba Mohammed Abubakar and Edmore Hamandishe </strong>explored wind turbine sensors using real-world data. Their work was guided by <strong>Siemens Gamesa&#8217;s Samy Z.</strong>, who also served as the project coordinator.</p> <p>A bold initiative by <strong>Luis Madruga, Iván Campos-Guereta Díez, Ángel Martín de la Sierra López Romero, and David Cuenca-Velázquez </strong>centered around creating a digital twin of the Dañador Dam. This team was mentored by experts from <strong>Ayesa—Fidel San Emeterio, Carlos Rodríguez, and Luis Castillo Cano-Cortés</strong>—with academic coordination provided by <strong>Miguel Ángel Toledo Municio and Eduardo Salete </strong>from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.</p> <p><strong>Alberto Navas and Iván Revilla Hernández </strong>took on the ambitious task of designing a digital twin for a bike-sharing service, using artificial intelligence to optimize operations. Their work was mentored by <strong>Nommon&#8217;s Javier Burrieza Galán and Oliva Garcia Cantu Ros</strong>, and coordinated by <strong>Natalia Sobrino Vázquez </strong>(UPM) and <strong>Juan Benavente Ponce</strong> (Universidad de Cantabria).</p> <p>Rounding off the presentations, <strong>Antía Fernández and Pachi Cartelle </strong>developed a predictive model for mass events. This app, designed for the Zurich market, integrates five essential features: a barcode recycling type identifier, weekly challenges and a reward system to incentivize sustainable behavior, educational games to raise awareness about circular economy principles, and an integrated map function for navigating recycling facilities. The European Association of International Education’s Conference in Toulouse will provide a unique opportunity to explore answers to this question, and many more, with real-life examples, testimonials, and facts. This is the very first time that the European Universities Alliances, a flagship initiative of the European Commission and its European Education Area since 2019, will come together and present themselves in a united way at a major international conference, allowing the international HE community to better understand the dimension of the European Universities Initiative, which is co-funding today a total of 64 Alliances.</p> <p>By showcasing their collaborative efforts and dynamizing a series of joint activities European Universities Alliances will take the stand as pioneers of a new paradigm of cooperation in Higher Education, paving their way to a leading role in shaping the global landscape of academia and research. They will also provide insight into their contributions as key actors in a transformative approach aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), viewing Higher Education as the catalyst for building a more resilient, sustainable, and equitable society.</p> <p>Inspired by the EAIE Conference’s theme En Route!, the Alliances will disseminate their objectives and actions, share the impact created, and communicate information regarding the results achieved by them on topics such as mobility or new joint programs. In 2021, Ádám earned a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and placed 5th at the European Championships.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">This year, he continued to shine, winning gold and silver at the European Championships. Competing at the Paris Olympics, he claimed another silver medal.
