It nests on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico during summer. To date, there is no information about congenital anomalies in this species, which could be an important factor to be considered as a survival threat. The aim of this study was to determine congenital anomalies in dead embryos and hatchlings of Kemp's ridley sea turtle during 2020 nesting season. Fieldwork was conducted at the 'Campamento Tortugero Barra Norte', on the shores of Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico. A total of 95 nests were evaluated, from which 223 dead embryos and hatchlings were collected. Anomalies were detected by detailed physical examinations. Photographs of each anomaly were taken. From the 223 dead turtles, 213 (95%) showed a congenital anomaly. A total of 53 types of congenital anomalies were found: 22 types on the head region, 21 on the carapace region, 6 on the flipper region, and 4 regarding the entire body. The most prevalent anomaly in the head region was the presence of prefrontal supernumerary scales (42%, 93 occurrences). On the carapace region, the most common anomaly was the presence of supernumerary gular scales (59%, 131 occurrences). The two most common anomalies on the flipper region were amelia in fore flippers and rear bifurcation of flippers (0.9%, 2 occurrences each). The most common anomaly involving the entire body was hypomelanism (35%, 79 occurrences). These results agree with the recent studies on congenital malformations on sea turtles, being the head and the carapace regions the ones with the highest number of congenital anomalies. It is unknown whether the reported anomalies can be related to the death of these individuals. However, it is necessary to develop embryological studies in this species. To our best knowledge, this is the first worldwide report on Kemp’s ridley sea turtle anomalies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amelia" title="Amelia">Amelia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hypomelanism" title=" hypomelanism"> hypomelanism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=morphology" title=" morphology"> morphology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supernumerary%20scales" title=" supernumerary scales"> supernumerary scales</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132504/first-approximation-to-congenital-anomalies-in-kemps-ridley-sea-turtle-lepidochelys-kempii-in-veracruz-mexico" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132504.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">160</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">22</span> Aligning Organizational Culture and Compensation Strategies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giuseppe%20Maria%20Russo">Giuseppe Maria Russo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patr%C3%ADcia%20Am%C3%A9lia%20Tomei"> Patrícia Amélia Tomei</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ant%C3%B4nio%20Linhares"> Antônio Linhares</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andr%C3%A9%20Moreira%20Santos"> André Moreira Santos</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Alignment between management strategies, policies and practices with organizational cultures holds great potential to meet the challenges of retaining professionals and maintaining their commitment. In this article, authors consider that when it is aligned with company strategy, compensation acts as an incentive for developing common visions within the organizational culture. This article verified the correlation between types of culture and compensation’s strategic components and provided inputs for the definition of strategies aligned with cultural typologies. We conclude that the impact of compensation variables varies according to the type of organizational culture. This result reinforces the theory that different cultures define different organizational strategies. Thus, compensation strategies may explain types of organizational culture. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compensation" title="compensation">compensation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Handy%E2%80%99s%20cultural%20typology" title=" Handy’s cultural typology"> Handy’s cultural typology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=organizational%20culture" title=" organizational culture"> organizational culture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rewards" title=" rewards"> rewards</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35481/aligning-organizational-culture-and-compensation-strategies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35481.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">660</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">21</span> Digitalised Welfare: Systems for Both Seeing and Working with Mess</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amelia%20Morris">Amelia Morris</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lizzie%20Coles-Kemp"> Lizzie Coles-Kemp</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Will%20Jones"> Will Jones</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper examines how community welfare initiatives transform how individuals use and experience an ostensibly universal welfare system. This paper argues that the digitalisation of welfare overlooks the complex reality of being unemployed or in low-wage work, and erects digital barriers to accessing welfare. Utilising analysis of ethnographic research in food banks and community groups, the paper explores the ways that Universal Credit has not abolished face-to-face support, but relocated it to unofficial sites of welfare. The apparent efficiency and simplicity of the state’s digital welfare apparatus, therefore, is produced not by reducing the ‘messiness’ of welfare, but by rendering it invisible within the digital framework. Using the analysis of the study’s data, this paper recommends three principles of service design that would render the messiness visible to the state. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=welfare" title="welfare">welfare</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digitalisation" title=" digitalisation"> digitalisation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=food%20bank" title=" food bank"> food bank</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Universal%20Credit" title=" Universal Credit"> Universal Credit</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/127231/digitalised-welfare-systems-for-both-seeing-and-working-with-mess" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/127231.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">152</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">20</span> Improved Mechanical and Electrical Properties and Thermal Stability of Post-Consumer Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol Containing Hybrid System of Nanofillers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Iman%20Taraghi">Iman Taraghi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandra%20Paszkiewicz"> Sandra Paszkiewicz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daria%20Pawlikowska"> Daria Pawlikowska</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anna%20Szymczyk"> Anna Szymczyk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Izabela%20Irska"> Izabela Irska</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafal%20Stanik"> Rafal Stanik</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amelia%20Linares"> Amelia Linares</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tiberio%20A.%20Ezquerra"> Tiberio A. Therefore, as an effort to solve the cases of malnutrition children in Bojonegoro, this study used the approach geographically Mixed Weighted Regression (MGWR) to determine the factors that influence the percentage of malnourished children under five in which factors can be divided into locally influential factor in each district and global factors that influence throughout the district. Based on the test of goodness of fit models, R2 and AIC values in GWR models are better than MGWR models. R2 and AIC values in MGWR models are 84.37% and 14.28, while the GWR models respectively are 91.04% and -62.04. Based on the analysis with GWR models, District Sekar, Bubulan, Gondang, and Dander is a district with three predictor variables (percentage of vitamin A, the percentage of births assisted health personnel, and the percentage of clean water) that significantly influence the percentage of malnourished children under five. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GWR" title="GWR">GWR</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MGWR" title=" MGWR"> MGWR</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=R2" title=" R2"> R2</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=AIC" title=" AIC"> AIC</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2014/modelling-and-maping-malnutrition-toddlers-in-bojonegoro-regency-with-mixed-geographically-weighted-regression-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2014.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">296</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">18</span> Job Satisfaction and Career Choices: A Study Using Schein´s Career Anchor Model </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rosana%20Silvina%20Codaro">Rosana Silvina Codaro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patricia%20Amelia%20Tomei"> Patricia Amelia Tomei</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study explores the relationship between job satisfaction and alignment between the individual´s current occupation and his talents, needs and values, namely his 'career anchors'. With this purpose in mind, a quantitative survey was performed for a non- graduate probabilistic sample of management business students of a private university in Rio de Janeiro. The results of the survey showed there is no significant association between satisfaction at work and alignment with the individual’s career anchor. The most frequent career anchor found for both genders was lifestyle, showing a trend towards finding a career that allows some balance between professional and personal life. The study also showed that self-employed individuals are more satisfied with their work than the individuals employed by a company are, and men are more satisfied at work than women are, Individuals aligned and not satisfied tend to be the ones who have fewer years of work experience and individuals not aligned and satisfied tend to be older. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=careers" title="careers">careers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=career%20anchors" title=" career anchors"> career anchors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=job%20satisfaction" title=" job satisfaction"> job satisfaction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Schein%C2%B4s%20career%20anchor%20model" title=" Schein´s career anchor model"> Schein´s career anchor model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35499/job-satisfaction-and-career-choices-a-study-using-scheins-career-anchor-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35499.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">363</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">17</span> Anemia Maternal in Pregnancy as a Risk Factor of Low Birth Weight: A Systematic Review</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Herlena%20Hayati">Herlena Hayati</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Diyan%20Reni%20%20Jayathi"> Diyan Reni Jayathi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hairida%20Anggun"> Hairida Anggun</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Citra%20Amelia"> Citra Amelia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This systematic review research is aimed to find out anemia maternal during pregnancy as a risk factor of low birth weight. This research was done by searching some journals which have associated to maternal anemia during pregnancy with low birth weight that had been published in journal accreditation and scopus index. Study literature that researcher had been done by March – April 2016 through online library of UI. The journals that had been selected according to inclusive criteria and exclusive criteria had been through the critial appraisal process. This systematic review towards 4 journals that had been selected and published showed the significant result statistically that anemia maternal is one of the risk factors which causes low birth weight. Anemia maternal on the first-trimester pregnancy showed significant association with low birth weight. Moderate anemia and severe anemia also showed significant association with low birth weight. Meanwhile, mild anemia doesn’t have an association with low birth weight. The conclusion of this study is anemia maternal (as an independent risk factor) have an influence towards low birth weight. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anemia%20maternal" title="anemia maternal">anemia maternal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low%20birth%20weight" title=" low birth weight"> low birth weight</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pregnancy" title=" pregnancy"> pregnancy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=systematic%20review" title=" systematic review"> systematic review</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58925/anemia-maternal-in-pregnancy-as-a-risk-factor-of-low-birth-weight-a-systematic-review" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58925.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">284</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">16</span> HPLC-UV Screening of Legal (Caffeine and Yohimbine) and Illegal (Ephedrine and Sibutramine) Substances from Weight Loss Dietary Supplements for Athletes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amelia%20Tero-Vescan">Amelia Tero-Vescan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Camil-Eugen%20Vari"> Camil-Eugen Vari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Ciulea"> Laura Ciulea</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cristina%20Filip"> Cristina Filip</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Silvia%20Imre"> Silvia Imre</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A HPLC –UV method for the identification of ephedrine (EPH), sibutramine (SB), yohimbine (Y) and caffeine (CF) was developed. Separation was performed on a Kromasil 100-RP8, 150 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 mm column equipped with a precolumn Kromasil RP 8. Mobile phase was a gradient of 80-35 % sodium dihydrogen phosphate pH=5 with NH4OH and acetonitrile over 15 minutes time of analysis. Based on the responses of 113 athletes about dietary supplements (DS) consumed for "fat burning" and weight loss which have a legal status in Romania, 28 supplements have been selected and investigated for their content in CF, Y, legal substances, and SB, EPH (prohibited substances in DS). The method allows quantitative determination of the four substances in a short analysis time and with minimum cost. The presence of SB and EPH in the analyzed DS was not detected while the content in CF and Y considering the dosage recommended by the manufacturer does not affect the health of the consumers. DS labeling (plant extracts with CF and Y content) allows manufacturers to avoid declaring correct and exact amounts per pharmaceutical form (pure CF or equivalent and Y, respectively). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dietary%20supplements" title="dietary supplements">dietary supplements</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sibutramine" title=" sibutramine"> sibutramine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ephedrine" title=" ephedrine"> ephedrine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=yohimbine" title=" yohimbine"> yohimbine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=caffeine" title=" caffeine"> caffeine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HPLC" title=" HPLC"> HPLC</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2518/hplc-uv-screening-of-legal-caffeine-and-yohimbine-and-illegal-ephedrine-and-sibutramine-substances-from-weight-loss-dietary-supplements-for-athletes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2518.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">442</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">15</span> Testing the Weak Form Efficiency of Islamic Stock Market: Empirical Evidence from Indonesia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Herjuno%20Bagus%20Wicaksono">Herjuno Bagus Wicaksono</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emma%20Almira%20Fauni"> Emma Almira Fauni</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Salma%20Amelia%20Dina"> Salma Amelia Dina</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) states that, in an efficient capital market, price fully reflects the information available in the market. This theory has influenced many investors behavior in trading in the stock market. Advanced researches have been conducted to test the efficiency of the stock market in particular countries. Indonesia, as one of the emerging countries, has performed substantial growth in the past years. Hence, this paper aims to examine the efficiency of Islamic stock market in Indonesia in its weak form. The daily stock price data from Indonesia Sharia Stock Index (ISSI) for the period October 2015 to October 2016 were used to do the statistical tests: Run Test and Serial Correlation Test. The results show that there is no serial correlation between the current price with the past prices and the market follows the random walk. This research concludes that Indonesia Islamic stock market is weak form efficient. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=efficient%20market%20hypothesis" title="efficient market hypothesis">efficient market hypothesis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Indonesia%20sharia%20stock%20index" title=" Indonesia sharia stock index"> Indonesia sharia stock index</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=random%20walk" title=" random walk"> random walk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=weak%20form%20efficiency" title=" weak form efficiency"> weak form efficiency</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61095/testing-the-weak-form-efficiency-of-islamic-stock-market-empirical-evidence-from-indonesia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61095.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">460</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">14</span> Factor Associated with Smoking Cessation among Pregnant Woman: A Systematic Review</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Galila%20Aisyah%20Latif%20Amini">Galila Aisyah Latif Amini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Husnul%20Khatimah"> Husnul Khatimah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Citra%20Amelia"> Citra Amelia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Smoking among women is of particular concern for the maternal and child health community due to the strong association between prenatal smoking and adverse birth outcomes. Pregnancy is perceived to be a unique reason for smoking cessation, as motivation to care for the unborn fetus. This study aimed to find out the determinants of smoking cessation among pregnant women. Method that we use in this study is systematic review. We identified relevant studies by searching on science database online through SAGE journals, Proquest, Scopus, Emerald, JSTOR, and Springerlink. Journals were screened by title and abstract according to the research topic then filtered using the criteria exclusion and inclusion. And then we did critical appraisal. The results of the four studies reviewed were found that the determinant of smoking cessation are parity, the level of education, socioeconomic status, household SHS exposure, smoking habits of both parents, partner smoking status, psychological factors, antenatal care, intervention for health care provider, age smoking duration. The factor most strongly associated with smoking cessation is parity (OR 2,55; Cl 2,34-2,77). The results of this study are expected to give advice for developing future smoking cessation and relapse prevention programs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pregnancy" title="pregnancy">pregnancy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=smoking%20cessation" title=" smoking cessation"> smoking cessation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tobacco%20use%20cessation" title=" tobacco use cessation"> tobacco use cessation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=smoking" title=" smoking"> smoking</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58977/factor-associated-with-smoking-cessation-among-pregnant-woman-a-systematic-review" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58977.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">243</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13</span> Energy in the Nexus of Defense and Border Security: Securing Energy Deposits in the Natuna Islands of Indonesia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Debby%20Rizqie%20Amelia%20Gustin">Debby Rizqie Amelia Gustin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Purnomo%20Yusgiantoro"> Purnomo Yusgiantoro</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Hydrocarbon energy is still pivotal to today’s economy, but its existence is continually declining. Thus, preserving future energy supply has become the national interest of many countries, which they cater in various way, from importing to expansion and occupation. Underwater of Natuna islands in Indonesia deposits great amount of natural gas reserved, numbered to 46 TCF (trillion cubic feet), which is highly potential to meet Indonesia future energy demand. On the other hand, there could be a possibility that others also seek this natural resources. Natuna is located in the borderline of Indonesia, directly adjacent to the South China Sea, an area which is prolonged to conflict. It is a challenge for Indonesia government to preserve their energy deposit in Natuna islands and to response accordingly if the tension in South China Sea rises. This paper examines that nowadays defense and border security is not only a matter of guarding a country from foreign invasion, but also securing its resources accumulated on the borderline. Countries with great amount of energy deposits on their borderline need to build up their defense capacity continually, to ensure their territory along with their energy deposits is free from any interferences. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=border%20security" title="border security">border security</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=defense" title=" defense"> defense</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy" title=" energy"> energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=national%20interest" title=" national interest"> national interest</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=threat" title=" threat"> threat</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61497/energy-in-the-nexus-of-defense-and-border-security-securing-energy-deposits-in-the-natuna-islands-of-indonesia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61497.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">482</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12</span> Reasons behind Accounting Information Tools Adopted by Portuguese Third Sector Organizations: Institutional Theory versus Rational Choice Theory</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eurico%20Lima%20Basto">Eurico Lima Basto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Of%C3%A9lia%20Pinto"> Ofélia Pinto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anabela%20Silva"> Anabela Silva</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Am%C3%A9lia%20Ferreira-Da-Silva"> Amélia Ferreira-Da-Silva</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The purpose if this study is two-fold: on the one hand, to identify the accounting information systems implemented in third sector organizations, as well as its components, its tools and the decisions and control purposes they serve; on the other hand, and by confronting these two theories - institutional theory versus rational choice – we intent to go further by understanding the reasons behind the adoption of the aforementioned tools. Data has been collected from third sector organizations operating in Portugal. Our sample includes all juridical types of organizations such as foundations, cooperative, associations or private institutions of social solidarity. The questionnaire contained sixteen close-ended questions and four open-questions. Results confirm the theoretical perspective of institutionalism. Most third sector organizations operating in Portugal implemented only traditional accounting tools like standard accounting statements, cost accounting, budgeting. Moreover, there is clear evidence that the decisions about the implementation of these tools were coercive oriented. With this study it is intended to contribute to a better understanding of the context of third sector organizations in Portugal, in particular the role that accounting plays in this sector, with a special focus on management accounting tools, and the factors that influence their use and the degree of their usefulness in the process of decision making. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=third%20sector" title="third sector">third sector</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=accounting%20tools" title=" accounting tools"> accounting tools</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=institutional%20theory" title=" institutional theory"> institutional theory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Portugal" title=" Portugal"> Portugal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=descriptive%20research" title=" descriptive research"> descriptive research</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47198/reasons-behind-accounting-information-tools-adopted-by-portuguese-third-sector-organizations-institutional-theory-versus-rational-choice-theory" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47198.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">307</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11</span> Soil Characteristics and Liquefaction Potential of the Bengkulu Region Based on the Microtremor Method</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aditya%20Setyo%20Rahman">Aditya Setyo Rahman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dwikorita%20Karnawati"> Dwikorita Karnawati</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Muzli"> Muzli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dadang%20Permana"> Dadang Permana</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sigit%20Pramono"> Sigit Pramono</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fajri%20Syukur%20Rahmatullah"> Fajri Syukur Rahmatullah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Oriza%20Sativa"> Oriza Sativa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Moehajirin"> Moehajirin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Edy%20Santoso"> Edy Santoso</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nur%20Hidayati%20Oktavia"> Nur Hidayati Oktavia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ardian%20Yudhi%20Octantyo"> Ardian Yudhi Octantyo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Robby%20Wallansha"> Robby Wallansha</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Juwita%20Sari%20Pradita"> Juwita Sari Pradita</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nur%20Fani%20Habibah"> Nur Fani Habibah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Audia%20Kaluku"> Audia Kaluku</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amelia%20Chelcea"> Amelia Chelcea</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yoga%20Dharma%20Persada"> Yoga Dharma Persada</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anton%20Sugiharto"> Anton Sugiharto</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Earthquake vibrations on the surface are not only affected by the magnitude of the earthquake and the distance from the hypocenter but also by the characteristics of the local soil. Variations and changes in soil characteristics from the depth of the bedrock to the surface can cause an amplification of earthquake vibrations that also affect the impact they may have on the surface. Soil characteristics vary widely even at relatively close distances, so for earthquake hazard mapping in cities with earthquake threats, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the local soil on a detailed or micro-scale (microzonation). This study proposes seismic microzonation and liquefaction potential based on microtremor observations. We carried out 143 microtremor observations, and the observation sites were spread across all populated sub-districts in Bengkulu City; the results showed that the dominance of Bengkulu City had medium soil types with a dominant period value of 0.4 < T₀ < 0.6, and there was one location with soft soil characteristics in the river, shaved with T₀ > 0.6. These results correlate with the potential for liquefaction as indicated by a seismic vulnerability index (K𝓰) greater than 5. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microtremor" title="microtremor">microtremor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dominant%20period" title=" dominant period"> dominant period</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microzonation" title=" microzonation"> microzonation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20vulnerability%20index" title=" seismic vulnerability index"> seismic vulnerability index</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/159784/soil-characteristics-and-liquefaction-potential-of-the-bengkulu-region-based-on-the-microtremor-method" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/159784.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">120</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">10</span> Characteristics and Item Parameters Fitness on Chemistry Teacher-Made Test Instrument</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rizki%20Nor%20Amelia">Rizki Nor Amelia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Farida%20A.%20Setiawati"> Farida A. The arrival of tourists from Germany, France, Italy, Russia and the United States has rewritten Dominican cultural identity and created a cultural palimpsest in the areas of language, gastronomy, habits, fashion, values, and gender relations. As a consequence of tourism, a prostitution network has flourished across the country. In the film Sand Dollars (2015) directed by Laura Amelia Guzmán and Israel Cárdenas, Noelí (Janet Mojica), a young mulatto woman, altogether with her boyfriend (Ricardo Ariel Toribio), strips tourists of dollars and euro through prostitution. One of her frequent clients is Anne, a mature French woman (Geraldine Chaplin). While Noeli’s goal is to get all the euros she can, Anne falls in love with her and tries to bring her to France. Both the content of the film and its cinematographic languages are analyzed in light of theory of coloniality. This concept shows how European and American tourism, through the power of money, perpetuates colonial discourse, i. e., how race and ethnocentrism permeate cultural activities in their former colonies. Moreover, in the content analysis of the film the concepts of exchange value and fetishism are crucial to understanding how the colonial body becomes sexual commodity. They facilitate grasping the film’s inequity in terms of power in the relationship between the two women: the white old European woman and the young, poor, third-world mulatta. Even though the film attempts to break away from compulsory heterosexuality, the power relation between the two women persists due to the presence of the axis of race, ethnicity, age and gender. Both the novel Les dollars des sables written by Jean-Noel Pancrazi, and the film Sand Dollars offer an interesting insight into sex tourism and coloniality and shed additional light on the power relations between the former colonizers and its colonies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=coloniality" title="coloniality">coloniality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ethnocentrism" title=" ethnocentrism"> ethnocentrism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=exchange%20value" title=" exchange value"> exchange value</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Europe" title=" Europe"> Europe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fetishism" title=" fetishism"> fetishism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=money" title=" money"> money</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=power" title=" power"> power</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prostitution" title=" prostitution"> prostitution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sex%20tourism" title=" sex tourism"> sex tourism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=United%20States%20of%20America" title=" United States of America"> United States of America</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49875/sand-dollars-sex-tourism-and-coloniality-of-power-in-the-dominican-republic" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49875.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">450</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> Creating a Digital Map to Monitor the Care of People Living with HIV/Aids in Porto Alegre, Brazil: An Experience Report</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tiago%20Sigal%20Linhares">Tiago Sigal Linhares</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ana%20Am%C3%A9lia%20Nascimento%20da%20Silva%20Bones"> Ana Amélia Nascimento da Silva Bones</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Juliana%20Miola"> Juliana Miola</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=McArthur%20Alexander%20Barrow"> McArthur Alexander Barrow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Airton%20Tetelbom%20Stein"> Airton Tetelbom Stein</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Introduction: As a result of increased globalization and changing migration trends, it is expected that a significant portion of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) will change their place of residence over time. In order to provide better health care, monitor the HIV epidemic and plan urban public health care and policies, there is a growing need to formulate a strategy for monitoring PLWHA care, location and migration patterns. The Porto Alegre District is characterized by a high prevalence of PLWHA and is considered one of the epicenters of HIV epidemic in Latin America. Objectives: The aim of this study is to create a digital and easily editable map in order to create a visual representation of the location of PLWHA and to monitor their migration within the city and the country in an effort to promote longitudinal care. Methods: This Experience Report used Google Maps Map Creator to generate an active digital map showing the location and changes in residence of 165 PLWHA who received care at two Primary Health Care (PHC) clinics, which attended an estimated population of five thousand patients, in downtown Porto Alegre over the last four years. Their current addresses were discovered in the unified Brazilian health care system digital records (e-SUS) and updated on the map. Results: A digital map with PLWHA current residence location was created. It was possible to demonstrate visually areas with a large concentration of PLWHA and the migration of the population within the city as wells as other cities, regions and states. Conclusions: An easily reproducible and free map could aid in PLWHA monitoring, urban public health planning, target interventions and situational diagnosis. Moreover, a visual representation of PLWHA location and migration could help bring more attention and investments to areas with geographic inequities or higher prevalence of PLWHA. It also enables notification of local PHC units of monitored patients inside their area, which are in clinical risk or with treatment abandonment through active case findings, improving the care of PLWHA. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=health%20care" title="health care">health care</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=medical%20public%20health" title=" medical public health"> medical public health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=theoretical%20and%20conceptual%20innovations" title=" theoretical and conceptual innovations"> theoretical and conceptual innovations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urban%20public%20health" title=" urban public health"> urban public health</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109204/creating-a-digital-map-to-monitor-the-care-of-people-living-with-hivaids-in-porto-alegre-brazil-an-experience-report" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109204.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">122</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Insights on the Social-Economic Implications of the Blue Economy Concept on Coastal Tourism in Tonga</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amelia%20Faotusia">Amelia Faotusia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The blue economy concept was coined by Pacific nations in recognition of the importance of sustainably managing their extensive marine territories. This is especially important for major ocean-based economic sectors of Pacific economies, such as coastal tourism. There is an absence of research, however, on the key ways in which the blue economy concept has emerged in discourse and public policy in Pacific countries, as well as how it articulates with coastal tourism. This research helps to fill such a gap with a specific focus on Tonga through the application of a post-positivist research approach to conduct a desktop study of relevant national documents and qualitative interviews with relevant government staff, civil society organizations, and tourism operators. The findings of the research reflect the importance of institutional integration and partnerships for a successful blue economy transition and are presented in the form of two case studies corresponding to two sub-sectors of Tonga’s coastal tourism sector: (i) the whale-watching and swimming industry, and (ii) beach resorts and restaurants. A thematic analysis applied to the interview data of both cases then enabled the identification of key areas and issues for socio-economic policy intervention and recommendations in support of blue economy transitions in Tonga’s coastal tourism sector. Examples of the relevant areas and issues that emerged included the importance of foreign direct investment, local market access, community-based special management areas, as well as the need to address the anthropogenic impacts of tropical cyclones, whale tourism, plastic litter on coastal assets, and ecosystems. Policy and practical interventions in support of addressing such issues include a proposed restructuring of the whale-watching and swimming licensing system; integration of climate resilience, adaptation, and capacity building as priorities of local blue economy interventions; as well as strengthening of the economic sustainability dimension of blue economy policies. Finally, this research also revealed the need for further specificity and research on the influence and value of local Tongan culture and traditional knowledge, particularly within existing customary marine tenure systems, on Tonga’s national and sectoral blue economy policies and transitions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=blue%20economy" title="blue economy">blue economy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=coastal%20tourism" title=" coastal tourism"> coastal tourism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=integrated%20ocean%20management" title=" integrated ocean management"> integrated ocean management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ecosystem%20resilience" title=" ecosystem resilience"> ecosystem resilience</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152174/insights-on-the-social-economic-implications-of-the-blue-economy-concept-on-coastal-tourism-in-tonga" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152174.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">92</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Enhancement Effect of Compound 4-Hydroxybenzoic Acid from Petung Bamboo (Dendrocalamus Asper) Shoots on α1β2γ2S of GABA (A) Receptor Expressed in Xenopus laevis Oocytes- Preliminary Study on Its Anti-Epileptic Potential</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Muhammad%20Bilal">Muhammad Bilal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amelia%20Jane%20Llyod"> Amelia Jane Llyod</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Habsah%20Mohamad"> Habsah Mohamad</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jia%20Hui%20Wong"> Jia Hui Wong</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdul%20Aziz%20Mohamed%20Yusoff"> Abdul Aziz Mohamed Yusoff</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jafri%20Malin%20Abdullah"> Jafri Malin Abdullah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jingli%20Zhang"> Jingli Zhang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Epilepsy is one of the major brain afflictions occurs with uncontrolled excitation of cortex; disturbed 50 million of world’s population. As technology is being widely used, there are several technological or economic issues that should be overcome to facilitate the adoption of this track-and-trace technology. One of the technological challenges of RFID technology is its sensitivity to different environmental form factors, including packaging materials and the content of the packaging. Although researchers have assessed the performance loss due to the proximity of water and aqueous solutions, there is still the need to further investigate the impacts of food products on the reading range of RFID tags. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are not enough studies to determine the correlation between RFID tag performance and food beverages properties. The goal of this project was to investigate the effect of the solution properties (pH and conductivity) and different packaging materials filled with food-like water-based solutions on the performance of an RFID tag. Three commercially available ultra high-frequency RFID tags were placed on three different bottles and filled with different concentrations of water-based solutions, including sodium chloride, citric acid, sucrose, and ethanol. Transparent glass, Polyethylneterephtalate (PET), and Tetrapak® were used as the packaging materials commonly used in the beverage industries. Tag readability (Theoretical Read Range, TRR) and sensitivity (Power on Tag Forward, PoF) were determined using an anechoic chamber. First, the best place to attach the tag for each packaging material was investigated using empty and water-filled bottles. Then, the bottles were filled with the food-like solutions and tested with the three different tags and the PoF and TRR at the fixed frequency of 915MHz. In parallel, the pH and conductivity of solutions were measured. The best-performing tag was then selected to test the bottles filled with wine, orange, and apple juice. Despite various solutions altering the performance of each tag, the change in tag performance had no correlation with the pH or conductivity of the solution. Additionally, packaging material played a significant role in tag performance. Each tag tested performed optimally under different conditions. This study is the first part of comprehensive research to determine the regression model for the prediction of tag performance behavior based on the packaging material and the content. More investigations, including more tags and food products, are needed to be able to develop a robust regression model. The results of this study can be used by RFID tag manufacturers to design suitable tags for specific products with similar properties. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=smart%20food%20packaging" title="smart food packaging">smart food packaging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supply%20chain%20management" title=" supply chain management"> supply chain management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=food%20waste" title=" food waste"> food waste</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radio%20frequency%20identification" title=" radio frequency identification"> radio frequency identification</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154956/effect-of-packaging-material-and-water-based-solutions-on-performance-of-radio-frequency-identification-for-food-packaging-applications" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154956.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">114</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Phorbol 12-Myristate 13-Acetate (PMA)-Differentiated THP-1 Monocytes as a Validated Microglial-Like Model in Vitro</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amelia%20J.%20McFarland">Amelia J. Activation of microglia occurs in response to a multitude of pathogenic stimuli in their microenvironment; this induces morphological and functional changes, resulting in a state of acute neuroinflammation which facilitates injury resolution. Adequate microglial function is essential for the health of the neuroparenchyma, with microglial dysfunction implicated in numerous CNS pathologies. Given the critical role that these macrophage-derived cells play in CNS homeostasis, there is a high demand for microglial models suitable for use in neuroscience research. The isolation of primary human microglia, however, is both difficult and costly, with microglial activation an unwanted but inevitable result of the extraction process. Consequently, there is a need for the development of alternative experimental models which exhibit morphological, biochemical and functional characteristics of human microglia without the difficulties associated with primary cell lines. In this study, our aim was to evaluate whether THP-1 human peripheral blood monocytes would display microglial-like qualities following an induced differentiation, and, therefore, be suitable for use as surrogate microglia. To achieve this aim, THP-1 human peripheral blood monocytes from acute monocytic leukaemia were differentiated with a range of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) concentrations (50-200 nM) using two different protocols: a 5-day continuous PMA exposure or a 3-day continuous PMA exposure followed by a 5-day rest in normal media. In each protocol and at each PMA concentration, microglial-like cell morphology was assessed through crystal violet staining and the presence of CD-14 microglial / macrophage cell surface marker. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli (055: B5) was then added at a range of concentrations from 0-10 mcg/mL to activate the PMA-differentiated THP-1 cells. Functional microglial-like behavior was evaluated by quantifying the release of prostaglandin (PG)-E2 and pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α using mediator-specific ELISAs. Furthermore, production of global reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) were determined fluorometrically using dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) and diaminofluorescein diacetate (DAF-2-DA) respectively. Following PMA-treatment, it was observed both differentiation protocols resulted in cells displaying distinct microglial morphology from 10 nM PMA. Activation of differentiated cells using LPS significantly augmented IL-1β, TNF-α and PGE2 release at all LPS concentrations under both differentiation protocols. Similarly, a significant increase in DCFH-DA and DAF-2-DA fluorescence was observed, indicative of increases in ROS and NO production. For all endpoints, the 5-day continuous PMA treatment protocol yielded significantly higher mediator levels than the 3-day treatment and 5-day rest protocol. Our data, therefore, suggests that the differentiation of THP-1 human monocyte cells with PMA yields a homogenous microglial-like population which, following stimulation with LPS, undergo activation to release a range of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with microglial activation. Thus, the use of PMA-differentiated THP-1 cells represents a suitable microglial model for in vitro research. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=differentiation" title="differentiation">differentiation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lipopolysaccharide" title=" lipopolysaccharide"> lipopolysaccharide</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microglia" title=" microglia"> microglia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monocyte" title=" monocyte"> monocyte</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neuroscience" title=" neuroscience"> neuroscience</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=THP-1" title=" THP-1"> THP-1</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47629/phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate-pma-differentiated-thp-1-monocytes-as-a-validated-microglial-like-model-in-vitro" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47629.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">388</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Backward-Facing Step Measurements at Different Reynolds Numbers Using Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Amelia%20V.%20C.%20Araujo">Maria Amelia V. This type of fluid behaviour takes place in many practical engineering applications, hence the reason for being investigated. Historically, fluid flows over a backward-facing step have been examined in many experiments using a variety of measuring techniques such as laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), hot-wire anemometry, particle image velocimetry or hot-film sensors. However, some of these techniques cannot conveniently be used in separated flows or are too complicated and expensive. In this work, the applicability of the acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV) technique is investigated to such type of flows, at various Reynolds numbers corresponding to different flow regimes. The use of this measuring technique in separated flows is very difficult to find in literature. Besides, most of the situations where the Reynolds number effect is evaluated in separated flows are in numerical modelling. The ADV technique has the advantage in providing nearly non-invasive measurements, which is important in resolving turbulence. The ADV Nortek Vectrino+ was used to characterize the flow, in a recirculating laboratory flume, at various Reynolds Numbers (Reh = 3738, 5452, 7908 and 17388) based on the step height (h), in order to capture different flow regimes, and the results compared to those obtained using other measuring techniques. To compare results with other researchers, the step height, expansion ratio and the positions upstream and downstream the step were reproduced. The post-processing of the AVD records was performed using a customized numerical code, which implements several filtering techniques. Subsequently, the Vectrino noise level was evaluated by computing the power spectral density for the stream-wise horizontal velocity component. The normalized mean stream-wise velocity profiles, skin-friction coefficients and reattachment lengths were obtained for each Reh. Turbulent kinetic energy, Reynolds shear stresses and normal Reynolds stresses were determined for Reh = 7908. An uncertainty analysis was carried out, for the measured variables, using the moving block bootstrap technique. Low noise levels were obtained after implementing the post-processing techniques, showing their effectiveness. Besides, the errors obtained in the uncertainty analysis were relatively low, in general. For Reh = 7908, the normalized mean stream-wise velocity and turbulence profiles were compared directly with those acquired by other researchers using the LDV technique and a good agreement was found. The ADV technique proved to be able to characterize the flow properly over a backward-facing step, although additional caution should be taken for measurements very close to the bottom. The ADV measurements showed reliable results regarding: a) the stream-wise velocity profiles; b) the turbulent shear stress; c) the reattachment length; d) the identification of the transition from transitional to turbulent flows. Despite being a relatively inexpensive technique, acoustic Doppler velocimetry can be used with confidence in separated flows and thus very useful for numerical model validation. However, it is very important to perform adequate post-processing of the acquired data, to obtain low noise levels, thus decreasing the uncertainty. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ADV" title="ADV">ADV</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=experimental%20data" title=" experimental data"> experimental data</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multiple%20Reynolds%20number" title=" multiple Reynolds number"> multiple Reynolds number</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=post-processing" title=" post-processing"> post-processing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110603/backward-facing-step-measurements-at-different-reynolds-numbers-using-acoustic-doppler-velocimetry" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110603.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">148</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> Capsaicin Derivatives Enhanced Activity of α1β2γ2S-Aminobutyric Acid Type a Receptor Expressed in Xenopus laevis Oocytes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jia%20H.%20Wong">Jia H. Epilepsy is a state of recurrent, spontaneous seizures with multiple syndromes and symptoms of different causes of brain dysfunction, prognosis, and treatments; characterized by transient, occasional and stereotyped interruptions of behavior whereby the excitatory-inhibitory activities within the central nervous system (CNS) are thrown out of balance due to various kinds of interferences. The goal of antiepileptic treatment is to enable patients to be free from seizures or to achieve control of seizures through surgical treatment and/or pharmacotherapy. Pharmacotherapy through AED plays an important role especially in countries with epilepsy treatment gap due to costs and availability of health facilities, skills and resources, yet there are about one-third of the people with epilepsy have drug-resistant seizures. Hence, this poses considerable challenges to the healthcare system and the effort in providing cost-effective treatment as well as the search for alternatives to treatment and management of epilepsy. Enhancement of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission is one of the key mechanisms of actions of antiepileptic drugs. GABA type > a receptors (GABAAR) are ligand-gated ion channels that mediate rapid inhibitory neurotransmission upon the binding of GABA with a heteropentameric structure forming a central pore that is permeable to the influx of chloride ions in its activated state. The major isoform of GABAA receptors consists of two α1, two β2, and one γ2 subunit. It is the most abundantly expressed combinations in the brain and the most commonly researched through Xenopus laevis oocytes. With the advancing studies on ethnomedicine and traditional treatments using medicinal plants, increasing evidence reveal that spice and herb plants with medicinal properties play an important role in the treatment of ailments within communities across different cultures. Capsaicin is the primary natural capsaicinoid in hot peppers of plant genus Capsicum, consist of an aromatic ring, an amide linkage and a hydrophobic side chain. The study showed that capsaicins conferred neuroprotection in status epilepticus mouse models through anti-ictogenic, hypothermic, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic actions in a dose-dependent manner. In this study, five capsaicin derivatives were tested for their ability to increase the GABA-induced chloride current on α1β2γ2S of GABAAR expressed on Xenopus laevis oocytes using the method of two-microelectrode voltage clamp. Two of the capsaicin derivatives, IS5 (N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)-3-methylbutyramide) and IS10 (N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)-decanamide) at a concentration of 30µM were able to significantly increase the GABA-induced chloride current with p=0.002 and p=0.026 respectively. This study were able to show the enhancement effect of two capsaicin derivatives with moderate length of hydrocarbon chain on this receptor subtype, revealing the promising inhibitory activity of capsaicin derivatives through enhancement of GABA-induced chloride current and further investigations should be carried out to verify its antiepileptic effects in animal models. <p
