And this was his dream: <span class="versenum">5</span>Noises<span data-fn='#fen' class='footnote' data-link='[<a href="#fen-NRSVCE-13285c" title="See footnote c">c</a>]'>[<a href="#fen" xtitle="See footnote c">c</a>]</span> and confusion, thunders and earthquake, tumult on the earth! <span class="versenum">6</span>Then two great dragons came forward, both ready to fight, and they roared terribly. <span class="versenum">7</span>At their roaring every nation prepared for war, to fight against the righteous nation. <span class="versenum">8</span>It was a day of darkness and gloom, of tribulation and distress, affliction and great tumult on the earth! <span class="versenum">9</span>And the whole righteous nation was troubled; they feared the evils that threatened them,<span data-fn='#fen' class='footnote' data-link='[<a href="#fen-NRSVCE-13285d" title="See footnote d">d</a>]'>[<a href="#fen" xtitle="See footnote d">d</a>]</span> and were ready to perish. <span class="versenum">10</span>Then they cried out to God; and at their outcry, as though from a tiny spring, there came a great river, with abundant water; <span class="versenum">11</span>light came, and the sun rose, and the lowly were exalted and devoured those held in honor.</span></p><p><span class="text"><span class="versenum">12</span>Mordecai saw in this dream what God had determined to do, and after he awoke he had it on his mind, seeking all day to understand it in every detail.</span></p><h3><span class="text">A Plot against the King</span></h3><p class="chapter-2"><span class="text"><span class="versenum">1</span>Now Mordecai took his rest in the courtyard with Bigthan and Teresh, the two eunuchs of the king who kept watch in the courtyard. <span class="versenum">2</span>He overheard their conversation and inquired into their purposes, and learned that they were preparing to lay hands on King Ahasuerus; and he informed the king concerning them. <span class="versenum">3</span>Then the king examined the two eunuchs, and after they had confessed it, they were led away to execution. <span class="versenum">4</span>The king made a permanent record of these things, and Mordecai wrote an account of them. <span class="versenum">5</span>And the king ordered Mordecai to serve in the court, and rewarded him for these things. <span class="versenum">6</span>But Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, who was in great honor with the king, determined to injure Mordecai and his people because of the two eunuchs of the king.</span></p><h2><span class="text"><span style="font-variant: small-caps" class="small-caps">End of Addition</span> A</span></h2><hr /><h3><span class="text">King Ahasuerus Deposes Queen Vashti</span></h3><p class="chapter-1"><span class="text"><span class="versenum">1</span>This happened in the days of Ahasuerus, the same Ahasuerus who ruled over one hundred twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia.<span data-fn='#fen' class='footnote' data-link='[<a href="#fen-NRSVCE-13285e" title="See footnote e">e</a>]'>[<a href="#fen" xtitle="See footnote e">e</a>]</span> </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">2</span>In those days when King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne in the citadel of Susa, </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">3</span>in the third year of his reign, he gave a banquet for all his officials and ministers. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and governors of the provinces were present, </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">4</span>while he displayed the great wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and pomp of his majesty for many days, one hundred eighty days in all.</span></p> <p><span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">5</span>When these days were completed, the king gave for all the people present in the citadel of Susa, both great and small, a banquet lasting for seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace. </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">6</span>There were white cotton curtains and blue hangings tied with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings<span data-fn='#fen' class='footnote' data-link='[<a href="#fen-NRSVCE-13290f" title="See footnote f">f</a>]'>[<a href="#fen" xtitle="See footnote f">f</a>]</span> and marble pillars. There were couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and colored stones. </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">7</span>Drinks were served in golden goblets, goblets of different kinds, and the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king. </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">8</span>Drinking was by flagons, without restraint; for the king had given orders to all the officials of his palace to do as each one desired. </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">9</span>Furthermore, Queen Vashti gave a banquet for the women in the palace of King Ahasuerus.</span></p> <p><span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">10</span>On the seventh day, when the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha and Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who attended him, </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">11</span>to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing the royal crown, in order to show the peoples and the officials her beauty; for she was fair to behold. </span> <span id="en" class="text"><span class="versenum">12</span>But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command conveyed by the eunuchs.
