The blessing of the basket signifies an abundance of provision and sustenance. This promise of prosperity is contingent upon obedience to God's commandments, as outlined in the preceding verses of <a href="/deuteronomy/28.htm">Deuteronomy 28</a>. The basket's blessing can be seen as a metaphor for the overall well-being and prosperity of the people, reflecting God's provision in their daily lives. This imagery is echoed in the New Testament, where Jesus feeds the multitudes, and the disciples gather the leftover fragments in baskets (<a href="/matthew/14-20.htm">Matthew 14:20</a>), symbolizing God's abundant provision.<p><b>and kneading bowl</b><br>The kneading bowl was an essential tool in the preparation of bread, a staple food in the ancient Near Eastern diet. The blessing of the kneading bowl indicates not only the availability of raw materials like flour and water but also the successful production of bread, which was central to daily sustenance. This blessing underscores the importance of God's provision in the most basic and essential aspects of life. In the broader biblical narrative, bread often symbolizes life and sustenance, as seen in Jesus' declaration, "I am the bread of life" (<a href="/john/6-35.htm">John 6:35</a>), pointing to spiritual nourishment and eternal life through Him.<p><b>will be blessed.</b><br>The concept of blessing in this context is tied to the covenant relationship between God and Israel. Blessings are promised as a result of obedience to God's laws and statutes. This particular blessing is part of a larger list of blessings for obedience found in <a href="/deuteronomy/28.htm">Deuteronomy 28</a>, contrasting with the curses for disobedience that follow. The assurance of blessing reflects God's faithfulness and desire to prosper His people when they walk in His ways. This theme of blessing for obedience is consistent throughout Scripture, as seen in <a href="/psalms/1.htm">Psalm 1</a>, where the righteous man is described as being like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in its season.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/m/moses.htm">Moses</a></b><br>The author of Deuteronomy, delivering God's laws and blessings to the Israelites.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/i/israelites.htm">Israelites</a></b><br>The recipients of the blessings and curses outlined in <a href="/bsb/deuteronomy/28.htm">Deuteronomy 28</a>, as they prepare to enter the Promised Land.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/p/promised_land.htm">Promised Land</a></b><br>The land of Canaan, which God promised to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.<br><br>4. <b><a href="/topical/m/mount_ebal_and_mount_gerizim.htm">Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim</a></b><br>The locations where the blessings and curses were to be proclaimed (Deuteronomy 27).<br><br>5. <b><a href="/topical/c/covenant.htm">Covenant</a></b><br>The agreement between God and the Israelites, which includes blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/g/god's_provision.htm">God's Provision</a></b><br>The promise of a blessed basket and kneading bowl signifies God's provision for daily needs. But this view rests upon the LXX. translation of the word for <span class= "ital">"</span>store." All the Targums, and all the Jewish commentators I have been able to consult, and the lexicons also, take a different view. The word is identical in form with that used for "kneading troughs" in <a href="/exodus/8-3.htm" title="And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into your house, and into your bedchamber, and on your bed, and into the house of your servants, and on your people, and into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs:">Exodus 8:3</a>; <a href="/exodus/12-34.htm" title="And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading troughs being bound up in their clothes on their shoulders.">Exodus 12:34</a>. And so the contrast is taken to be, either (1) between firstfruits in their natural condition (<a href="/deuteronomy/26-2.htm" title="That you shall take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which you shall bring of your land that the LORD your God gives you, and shall put it in a basket, and shall go to the place which the LORD your God shall choose to place his name there.">Deuteronomy 26:2</a>) and the dough offered when already prepared for food, as in the wave-loaves (<a href="/leviticus/23-17.htm" title="You shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals; they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baked with leaven; they are the first fruits to the LORD.">Leviticus 23:17</a>); or (2) between the basket in which the corn is carried and the receptacle for the meal or dough, or (as Rashi takes it) between the vessel for things moist and the vessel for things dry. But the view taken by the LXX. is as old as any, and the contrast indicated by "basket" and "store" is simpler and more comprehensive than that which is drawn from a reference to the details of the law. The Authorised Version is, therefore, distinctly to be preferred, in my opinion. There are other technical reasons, which cannot be given here. . . . <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Your basket</span><br /><span class="heb">טַנְאֲךָ֖</span> <span class="translit">(ṭan·’ă·ḵā)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2935.htm">Strong's 2935: </a> </span><span class="str2">A basket</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and kneading bowl</span><br /><span class="heb">וּמִשְׁאַרְתֶּֽךָ׃</span> <span class="translit">(ū·miš·’ar·te·ḵā)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4863.htm">Strong's 4863: </a> </span><span class="str2">Perhaps kneading trough</span><br /><br /><span class="word">will be blessed.</span><br /><span class="heb">בָּר֥וּךְ</span> <span class="translit">(bā·rūḵ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1288.htm">Strong's 1288: </a> </span><span class="str2">To kneel, to bless God, man, to curse</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">Deuteronomy 28:5 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/deuteronomy/28-5.htm">OT Law: Deuteronomy 28:5 Your basket and your kneading trough shall (Deut.
