(Isaiah 42:1). The concept of the "Servant" is significant in the Old Testament, often referring to a figure who fulfills God's purposes. The choice of the Servant by God emphasizes divine election and purpose, highlighting Jesus' role in God's redemptive plan. This echoes the theme of the chosen one seen in the lives of figures like David and Israel itself, who were selected for specific divine missions.
My beloved, in whom My soul delights
The term "beloved" signifies a deep, affectionate relationship between God and Jesus, reminiscent of the language used at Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3:17) and transfiguration (Matthew 17:5). This phrase underscores the pleasure and approval of God in Jesus' mission and character. It reflects the intimate relationship within the Trinity and aligns with the messianic prophecies that speak of the coming one who would be pleasing to God (Isaiah 42:1).
I will put My Spirit on Him
This indicates the anointing and empowerment of Jesus by the Holy Spirit, a fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy (Isaiah 61:1). The presence of the Spirit signifies divine authority and capability to carry out God's mission. This anointing is evident in Jesus' ministry, marked by miracles, teaching, and acts of compassion. It also connects to the broader biblical theme of the Spirit's role in empowering leaders and prophets, such as Moses, David, and the judges of Israel.
and He will proclaim justice to the nations
This phrase highlights the universal scope of Jesus' mission, extending beyond Israel to all nations. The proclamation of justice involves the establishment of God's righteous order, addressing both spiritual and social dimensions. It reflects the messianic expectation of a ruler who would bring peace and justice, as seen in prophecies like Isaiah 9:7. This mission aligns with the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), where Jesus commands His followers to make disciples of all nations, emphasizing the global impact of His work.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The servant chosen by God, beloved and filled with the Spirit, who fulfills the prophecy and mission of bringing justice to the nations.

2. God the Father
The one who chooses and delights in the servant, affirming His divine mission and authority.

3. The Nations
The broader audience to whom justice will be proclaimed, indicating the universal scope of Jesus' mission.

4. Isaiah the Prophet
The original prophecy comes from Isaiah, highlighting the continuity of God's plan from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

5. The Holy Spirit
The Spirit of God that empowers Jesus for His mission, emphasizing the divine nature of His work.
Teaching Points
Chosen and Beloved
Recognize that Jesus is uniquely chosen and beloved by God, affirming His authority and mission. In each of these aspects the words of Isaiah found their highest fulfilment in the Son of Man. In referring these words to the Messiah, the Evangelist was following in the footsteps of the Chaldee Paraphrase, but we must remember also that the words recorded as heard at the Baptism of Jesus (almost verbally identical with those of the prophecy now cited) must also have suggested the application, especially as connected with the promise, "I will put My Spirit upon Him," which had then received its fulfilment.
He shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.--The word "judgment" has a wide range of meaning in the Hebrew of Isaiah, and includes the work of a king, as teaching, no less than as executing, righteousness. As yet, of course, the work of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles had not begun, but St. Matthew notes, as it were, by anticipation, the spirit of love and gentleness which, when he wrote his Gospel, had brought them also within the range of the judgments--i.e., of the life-giving truths--of the righteous Judge. It is one of the many instances in which his record, though obviously written for Jews, is yet emphatically a Gospel for the Gentiles.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 18. - Behold my servant. It is "the true religion viewed on its practical side as a norm and standard for life in all its relations" (Delitzsch). The thought here, therefore, is not of Christ's power to punish and avenge (though he refused to use it as yet), but of his bringing a revelation which should eventually spread, not only to the Jews who now rejected him, but to the Gentiles whom they despised.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
“Here is
Ἰδοὺ (Idou)
Verb - Aorist Imperative Active - 2nd Person Singular
Strong's 2400: See!
