Once considered an elite sport played by ladies and gentlemen of leisure, it has since become a pastime embraced by men and women of all backgrounds. No one person did more to democratize and popularize the sport than Arnold Palmer. Born to a working class family in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Arnold Palmer learned the game from his father, the greenskeeper at the local country club. Blessed with natural physical gifts, enormous dedication and undeniable passion for the game, Palmer developed a devastating drive and became the dominant golfer of his era. In a six-year winning streak, he won the U.S. Open once, the British Open twice, and the Masters Tournament four times. In all he recorded 92 victories as a professional, 62 of them on the PGA tour. Palmer’s rise coincided with the arrival of television in a majority of American homes. His easygoing, unpretentious personality and daring approach to the game endeared him to television audiences from coast to coast. His personal popularity is often credited with a dramatic increase in the popularity of golf as both spectator sport and recreation. His achievements won recognition by the sporting press as Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year and the Associated Press’s Sportsman of the Decade in the 1960s, by his peers with the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Professional Golfers Association, and by his government with the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom."/>
<meta property="og:description" content="In the second half of the 20th century the game of golf experienced a worldwide boom in popularity. His father worked as a greenskeeper at the Latrobe Country Club; the family lived at the edge of the golf course. An enthusiast of the game, the elder Palmer eventually became the club pro. He began teaching young Arnold the rudiments of golf as soon as the boy could hold a short-handled club. Arnold Palmer showed a precocious talent for the game, winning the Western Pennsylvania Junior three times and the Western Pennsylvania Amateur championship five times. He attended Wake Forest College on a golf scholarship, but left after three years to enlist in the Coast Guard. In 1954 he won the U.S. national amateur championship in Detroit, and began to plan a professional career. The same year, he met and married Winifred Walzer.

His achievements won recognition by the sporting press as Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year and the Associated Press’s Sportsman of the Decade in the 1960s, by his peers with the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Professional Golfers Association, and by his government with the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Watch full interview

Founding Father of Modern Golf

Orlando, Florida

December 2, 1997

Could you tell us about the early days in Pennsylvania, and your dad and how he affected your life?

Arnold Palmer: I think we have to start with the fact that I was born in 1929, that’s a long time ago. And most people don’t even remember what happened in 1929 or 1930. But if you think about the Depression, and life being raised in the Depression was considerably different than we recognize things today. My father was a young man who had been afflicted with polio, or infantile paralysis, and he was handicapped to a degree by having his left leg and ankle affected by the disease. And as a result, he developed his upper body, and to the point where he was about as strong as anyone I had ever seen, from his waist up. And that had an influence on me and my future. He also started at age 16 working on a golf course as a laborer. That also had an effect on my life. And what, of course, we know it today as my life. But he was a very determined person, and that job that he got at 16 on the golf course led to his entire life and his future. He went from working on the golf course as a laborer building the golf course, to the superintendent, or as we knew it in those days, the greenskeeper. And all of this was happening in the early ’30s. And having been just born, I was a part of all that. And I can remember being babysat by the crew on the grounds who were working for my father, taking care of a nine-hole golf course in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Arnold Palmer with his father, Deacon, a greenskeeper at a country club where Palmer learned the game of golf.

You say it had a direct impact on his life, but obviously on yours as well. I suppose the few times that I laid up for whatever the situation might be were the times that I made terrible mistakes and didn’t win, because I laid up. And I didn’t mind losing, if I went for it, or if I gave it all I had. It wasn’t so bad to lose. I knew that I had given every shot I had in my body, and maybe someone beat me, and that happened a lot. But at least I felt like I had given it all I had.

When you’ve been on top in a profession, is it difficult to deal with the inevitability that you can’t stay there forever? Is that hard to deal with?

Arnold Palmer: Well, I suppose everyone has to think about that. It’s hard to give up something that is pretty nice. And something that you’ve worked for all your life. But I think there comes a time when you must recognize that too. And be ready to turn it over to someone else. Whether I was ready when it happened, who knows? But after it happened, and after I got on with my life after not being, let’s say the top of the game, I enjoyed myself. I enjoyed where I was, what I was doing. And I enjoyed making a comeback every once in a while. That was something that I could work for and enjoy.

The comeback after your prostate cancer scare had to be a frightening moment.

Arnold Palmer: Frightening, I suppose. I look at it as something that medically I couldn’t do much about it. Cancer is something that we can only hope that we are doing the right things, from a health standpoint, meaning eating, or smoking cigarettes, or whatever the thing might be that happens to you. I felt very fortunate that my doctors told me what was happening to me. They gave me the options to do various things. I chose the one that I felt that I could be most successful with. And I certainly won’t tell you that it was easy. But I won’t tell you that it was the toughest thing that ever happened either. If you have it, you go do something about it, and if you’re fortunate, as I was, you come out of it. And you get on with your life.

I suppose that, again, if I were advising and talking about anyone, any individual, it would be to have your annual physicals and to do the things that you know that are going to give you a better shot at living a full and happy life. And I’ve tried to do that. Whether it be going and getting a simple blood test for prostate cancer, or a mammogram for breast cancer, or for any number of things that might help you get on with your life. We can’t forecast everything. And of course, some of us aren’t so fortunate. But on the other hand, if we give it a chance, then we’ve done the best we can. And it’s sort of like playing golf, if you don’t give it a shot, you’re not gonna make it. And I think we all have to look at it that way.

You battled it head-on, and before we knew it you were back out there playing golf.

Arnold Palmer: Well, as I said, I was very fortunate.

Is there any particular legacy that you’re most proud of?

Arnold Palmer: That’s difficult for someone to talk about themselves. If I’ve helped improve the game of golf and if I’ve helped improve people’s outlook on life and the game of golf, that would be something that I would be very happy for. I would really like to think that maybe I have left something that other people will look at and say, when people come in back of them, that they have given them the same opportunity that we had. And that means give our kids the opportunities that we’ve had through these years. And if I can do that and leave something along those lines to people, I’ll be very happy for that.

You’ve become an incredibly successful businessman, and I don’t imagine that the strategies were necessarily the same. You can’t afford to go for broke in business, because that can happen quite literally. Has it been maybe a different approach? Have you been more frugal as how you’ve approached your business dealings than you have been on the golf course?

Arnold Palmer: I don’t think so. I’ve had a lot of help in business. And my philosophy is not a great deal different in business than it would be in golf. I endorse a lot of products, I do a lot of things in business that have resulted from my golf. And I would like to think that the products that I endorse, I use. And I think that’s had a great deal to do with the integrity that is in back of my business sense and my feeling about the things I do in business. I have had the same association in business that I started with about almost 40 years ago, and that has been a good association. It’s one that I think has afforded me a lot of opportunities, and continues. At my age, I feel very fortunate to still be involved in the business world.

I suppose that one of the things that I thought about many years ago when I was playing golf every day and looking to the future, to what I might be doing when I wasn’t actively playing on the regular tour, and that was that I would like to spend my mornings getting up early, going to the office. Making whatever business decisions I had to make in the mornings. And then about 11:30 closing off and going out and playing a pleasant round of golf. And for the best part, I’ve been able to do that. Although I suppose some of the business and the success you’re talking about has taken some of that away, in that I don’t get out on the golf course as much as I would like to. And that’s a result of continuing to be involved in business.

And continuing to be very successful at business. Your success in business has proven to be so overwhelming that now it’s cutting into the golf time. That’s acceptable though, isn’t it?

Arnold Palmer: It is acceptable, but one day I suppose that I will really cut back on the business, and enjoy the golf even a little bit more. And people say, gee, you played golf all your life, haven’t you had enough of it? I can’t say that I’ve had enough of it. I still enjoy going out on the golf course. I still enjoy working with my golf clubs. I still enjoy the things that have made all of this happen — my flying, for an example. When I think I started flying and learning to fly airplanes in 1955, and I more recently just went to flight safety for a type program in the Citation 10, which is one of the most magnificent pieces of machinery that I have ever had the opportunity to fly. And I’ve wondered at times, when I was doing that, what am I doing here? Why am I doing this? At 67, 68 years old, why am I really working as hard as I am to get a type rating in a Citation 10?

Have you come up with the answer why you’re up there doing that?

Arnold Palmer: I just couldn’t stop. If I stopped, it would be like giving up on the golf course. It would be like not going for the pin on a par five that I knew I could reach in two. It’s something that is vital to me and to my continued enjoyment in life. And the thrill of flying the airplane, and being able to use it as a business tool, which I have for 40 years, and I think about that. And without airplanes, without the ability to fly my own airplane, and to get around as I have in a private airplane, my business would have never been as successful as it has been. It has afforded me the opportunity to do things that I would have never done without it.

When you have a competitive fire inside of you as a human being, you can’t put that out no matter how hard you try, it doesn’t sound like.

Arnold Palmer: Well, that’s right. I remember, before I went to Wichita for flight safety, this last time, I said to my wife, “Why am I doing this?” And she says, “You know deep down why you’re doing it.” And she says, “Whatever I say isn’t going to change that, except to encourage you to go do it.”

It must be a joy to spend time with your grandchildren, and maybe tell them some of the old stories. That has to be a source of joy for you.

Arnold Palmer: Well, having grandchildren and having the good fortune to have six grandchildren, and to be able to enjoy them and to see them growing up, having a lot of the things that I did not have when I was a child, is a great pleasure to me. But at the same time, the things that I talked about earlier, discipline and the thoughts of success for them, is very important to me. And to see them with discipline is fantastic, and still great kids. And they are just a great deal of enjoyment for me. And their lifestyles, and again, I say, it’s America, there’s no place like it. And there’s no place like it to raise your kids.

Is there any greater satisfaction in life than being able to do what you’re doing now for your grandchildren?

Arnold Palmer: Well, it makes getting old a lot more pleasant, how’s that?

Were there any particular favorite books that you used to read to them?

Arnold Palmer: Oh, the kids are into so many things today, whether it be computer programs, or golf, on what they do in their day-to-day activities, their schooling and their education. And their education is so important, and they’re getting good educations, and I like that. And I just don’t think that there’s anything that you can substitute for knowledge and discipline.

You’ve come a long way from hitting that first nickel over the ditch.

Arnold Palmer: A long way. And I’ve often said, if I had to do it again, I’d like to do it the same way. But maybe win another National Open, or a PGA Championship.

Any advice to give to young people?

Arnold Palmer: I can say it a thousand times, discipline and knowledge, put them together, and it will make a very enjoyable life for young people.

Read full interview

Arnold Palmer Gallery

45 photos

<div class="lazyload ratio-container__image" data-toggle="modal" data-target="#imageModal" data-image-src="/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/RTR5VPX.jpg" data-image-caption="1997: PGA golfers Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods share a light moment at Palmer's Bay Hill Club. In 1950, Palmer and Worsham attended a function in Durham along with other Wake Forest students. Palmer returned to the Wake Forest, North Carolina campus separately from Worsham. On the drive home, Worsham and Wake Forest football player Gene Scheer were killed when their car careened off a bridge.
