And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to the people<MH5971a>, &#8220;I myself<MH589> will certainly<MH3318> go<MH3318> out<MH3318> with you also<MH1571>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>But the people<MH5971a> said<MH559>, &#8220;You should not go<MH3318> out<MH3318>; for if<MH518> in<MH5127> fact<MH5127> we flee<MH5127>, they will not care<MH7760, 3820> about<MH413> us; and if<MH518> half<MH2677> of us die<MH4191>, they will not care<MH7760, 3820> about<MH413> us. But <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>you are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>worth ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> of us; so now<MH6258> it is better<MH2896a> that you will be <i>ready</i> to help<MH5826> us from the city<MH5892b>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to them, &#8220;Whatever<MH834> seems<MH3190> best<MH3190> to you I will do<MH6213a>.&#8221; So the king<MH4428> stood<MH5975> beside<MH413, 3027> the gate<MH8179>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> by hundreds<MH3967> and thousands<MH505>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But the king<MH4428> commanded<MH6680> Joab<MH3097>, Abishai<MH52>, and Ittai<MH863a>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;<i>Deal</i> gently<MH328> with the young<MH5288> man<MH5288> Absalom<MH53> for my sake.&#8221; And all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> heard<MH8085> when the king<MH4428> commanded<MH6680> all<MH3605> the commanders<MH8269> regarding<MH5921, 1697> Absalom<MH53>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the people<MH5971a> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the field<MH7704> against<MH7122> Israel<MH3478>, and the battle<MH4421> took<MH1961> place<MH1961> in the forest<MH3293a> of Ephraim<MH669>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The people<MH5971a> of Israel<MH3478> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>defeated<MH5062> there<MH8033> by the servants<MH5650> of David<MH1732>, and the slaughter<MH4046> there<MH8033> that day<MH3117> was great<MH1419>, twenty<MH6242> thousand<MH505> <i>men.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For the battle<MH4421> there<MH8033> was spread<MH6327a> over<MH5921, 6440> the whole<MH3605> countryside<MH776>, and the forest<MH3293a> devoured<MH398> more<MH7235a> people<MH5971a> that day<MH3117> than<MH4480, 834> the sword<MH2719> devoured<MH398>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now Absalom<MH53> encountered<MH7122> the servants<MH5650> of David<MH1732>. Absalom<MH53> was riding<MH7392> on <i>his</i> mule<MH6505>, and the mule<MH6505> went<MH935> under<MH8478> the branches<MH7730> of a massive<MH1419> oak<MH424>. Then his head<MH7218> caught<MH2388> firmly<MH2388> in the oak<MH424>, and he was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>left<MH5414> hanging<MH5414> between<MH996> the sky<MH8064> and earth<MH776>, while the mule<MH6505> that was under<MH8478> him kept<MH5674a> going<MH5674a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>When a certain<MH259> man<MH376> saw<MH7200> <i>him,</i> he informed<MH5046> Joab<MH3097> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, I saw<MH7200> Absalom<MH53> hanging<MH8518> in an oak<MH424>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Joab<MH3097> said<MH559> to the man<MH376> who had informed<MH5046> him, &#8220;So behold<MH2009>, you saw<MH7200> <i>him!</i> Why<MH4069> then did you not strike<MH5221> him there<MH8033> to the ground<MH776>? And <i>it would have been</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>my duty<MH5921> to give<MH5414> you ten<MH6235> <i>pieces</i> of silver<MH3701> and a belt<MH2290b>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But the man<MH376> said<MH559> to Joab<MH3097>, &#8220;Even if<MH3863> I were to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>receive<MH8254> a thousand<MH505> <i>pieces of</i> silver<MH3701> in my hand<MH3709>, I would not put<MH7971> out<MH7971> my hand<MH3027> against<MH413> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son<MH1121>; for in our hearing<MH241> the king<MH4428> commanded<MH6680> you, Abishai<MH52>, and Ittai<MH863a>, saying<MH559>, &#8216;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Protect<MH8104> the young<MH5288> man<MH5288> Absalom<MH53> for me!&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Otherwise<MH176>, if I had dealt<MH6213a> treacherously<MH8267> against <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>his life<MH5315> (and there is nothing<MH3605, 1697, 3808> hidden<MH3582> from the king<MH4428>), then you yourself<MH859> would have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>avoided<MH3320, 4480, 5048> <i>me.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then Joab<MH3097> said<MH559>, &#8220;I will not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>waste<MH3176> time<MH3176> here<MH3651> with you.&#8221; So he took<MH3947> three<MH7969> spears<MH7626> in his hand<MH3709> and thrust<MH8628> them through the heart<MH3820> of Absalom<MH53> while he was still<MH5750> alive<MH2416a> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>midst<MH3820> of the oak<MH424>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And ten<MH6235> young<MH5288> men<MH5288> who carried<MH5375> Joab&#8217;s<MH3097> armor<MH3627> gathered<MH5437> around<MH5437> and struck<MH5221> Absalom<MH53> and killed<MH4191> him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then Joab<MH3097> blew<MH8628> the trumpet<MH7782>, and the people<MH5971a> returned<MH7725> from pursuing<MH7291> Israel<MH3478>, for Joab<MH3097> restrained<MH2820> the people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And they took<MH3947> Absalom<MH53> and threw<MH7993> him into <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>a deep<MH1419> pit<MH6354> in the forest<MH3293a>, and erected<MH5324> over<MH5921> him a very<MH3966> large<MH1419> pile<MH1530> of stones<MH68>. And all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> fled<MH5127>, each<MH376> to his <i>own</i> tent<MH168>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now Absalom<MH53> in his lifetime<MH2425b> had taken<MH3947> and set<MH5324> up<MH5324> for himself a memorial<MH4676> stone<MH4676>, which<MH834> is in the King&#8217;s<MH4428> Valley<MH6010>, for he said<MH559>, &#8220;I have<MH369> no<MH369> son<MH1121> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>continue<MH2142> my name<MH8034>.&#8221; So he named<MH7121> the memorial<MH4676> stone<MH4676> after<MH5921> his own name<MH8034>, and it is called<MH7121> Absalom&#8217;s<MH53> Monument<MH3027> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <p class="hdg">David Is Grief-stricken</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then Ahimaaz<MH290> the son<MH1121> of Zadok<MH6659> said<MH559>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> let me run<MH7323> and bring<MH1319> the king<MH4428> news<MH1319> that the LORD<MH3068> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>freed<MH8199> him from the hand<MH3027> of his enemies<MH340>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But Joab<MH3097> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;You are not the man<MH376> <i>to bring</i> news<MH1309> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, but you shall bring<MH1319> news<MH1319> another<MH312> day<MH3117>; however, you shall bring<MH1319> no<MH3808> news<MH1319> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, because<MH3588, 5921> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son<MH1121> is dead<MH4191>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then Joab<MH3097> said<MH559> to the Cushite<MH3569>, &#8220;Go<MH1980>, tell<MH5046> the king<MH4428> what<MH834> you have seen<MH7200>.&#8221; So the Cushite<MH3569> bowed<MH2331c> to Joab<MH3097> and ran<MH7323>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>However, Ahimaaz<MH290> the son<MH1121> of Zadok<MH6659> said<MH559> once<MH3254, 5750> more<MH3254, 5750> to Joab<MH3097>, &#8220;But whatever<MH4100> happens<MH1961>, please<MH4994> let me also<MH1571> run<MH7323> after<MH310> the Cushite<MH3569>.&#8221; And Joab<MH3097> said<MH559>, &#8220;Why<MH4100, 2088> would you run<MH7323>, my son<MH1121>, since you will have<MH369> no<MH369> messenger&#8217;s<MH1309> reward<MH1309> for going<MH3318>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>&#8220;But whatever<MH4100> happens<MH1961>,&#8221; <i>he said,</i> &#8220;I will run<MH7323>.&#8221; So he said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Run<MH7323>.&#8221; Then Ahimaaz<MH290> ran<MH7323> by way<MH1870> of the plain<MH3603> and passed<MH5674a> by<MH5674a> the Cushite<MH3569>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now David<MH1732> was sitting<MH3427> between<MH996> the two<MH8147> gates<MH8179>; and the watchman<MH6822> went<MH1980> to the roof<MH1406> of the gate<MH8179> by the wall<MH2346>, and raised<MH5375> his eyes<MH5869> and looked<MH7200>; and behold<MH2009>, a man<MH376> was running<MH7323> by<MH905> himself<MH905>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So the watchman<MH6822> called<MH7121> out<MH7121> and told<MH5046> the king<MH4428>. And the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, &#8220;If<MH518> he is by<MH905> himself<MH905> there is good<MH1309> news<MH1309> in his mouth<MH6310>.&#8221; And he came<MH1980> nearer<MH7131, 1980> and nearer<MH7131>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then the watchman<MH6822> saw<MH7200> another<MH312> man<MH376> running<MH7323>; and the watchman<MH6822> called<MH7121> to the gatekeeper<MH7778> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, <i>another</i> man<MH376> is running<MH7323> by<MH905> himself<MH905>.&#8221; And the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH2088> one<MH2088> also<MH1571> is bringing<MH1319> good<MH1319> news<MH1319>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>The watchman<MH6822> said<MH559>, &#8220;I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>think<MH7200> the running<MH4794> form<MH4794> of the first<MH7223> one<MH7223> is like the running<MH4794> form<MH4794> of Ahimaaz<MH290> the son<MH1121> of Zadok<MH6659>.&#8221; And the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH2088> is a good<MH2896a> man<MH376>, and he is coming<MH935> with good<MH2896a> news<MH1309>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then Ahimaaz<MH290> called<MH7121> out<MH7121> and said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>All is well<MH7965>.&#8221; And he prostrated<MH2331c> himself before the king<MH4428> with his face<MH639> to the ground<MH776>. And he said<MH559>, &#8220;Blessed<MH1288> is the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>, who<MH834> has turned<MH5462> over<MH5462> the men<MH376> who<MH834> raised<MH5375> their hands<MH3027> against my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>But the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, &#8220;Is it well<MH7965> with the young<MH5288> man<MH5288> Absalom<MH53>?&#8221; And Ahimaaz<MH290> answered<MH559>, &#8220;When Joab<MH3097> sent<MH7971> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> servant<MH5650>, and your servant<MH5650>, I saw<MH7200> a great<MH1419> commotion<MH1995>, but I did not know<MH3045> what<MH4100> <i>it was.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, &#8220;Turn<MH5437> aside<MH5437> and stand<MH3320> here<MH3541>.&#8221; So he turned<MH5437> aside<MH5437> and stood<MH5975> still<MH5975>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then behold<MH2009>, the Cushite<MH3569> arrived<MH935>, and the Cushite<MH3569> said<MH559>, &#8220;Let my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> receive<MH1319> good<MH1319> news<MH1319>, for the LORD<MH3068> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>freed<MH8199> you this day<MH3117> from the hand<MH3027> of all<MH3605> those who rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> against<MH5921> you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to the Cushite<MH3569>, &#8220;Is it well<MH7965> with the young<MH5288> man<MH5288> Absalom<MH53>?&#8221; And the Cushite<MH3569> answered<MH559>, &#8220;May the enemies<MH340> of my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, and all<MH3605> who<MH834> rise<MH6965> up<MH6965> against<MH5921> you for evil<MH7463a>, be like <i>that</i> young<MH5288> man<MH5288>!&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/18-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>Then the king<MH4428> trembled<MH7264> and went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the chamber<MH5944> over<MH5944> the gate<MH8179> and wept<MH1058>.
