activity entered into contraction territory for the first time since May 2015 in April, as the Nikkei Singapore Purchasing Managers' Index, or PMI, clocked in at 49.4, down from March's 52.0.</p><p>A reading above 50 indicates economic expansion, while a reading below 50 points toward contraction.</p><div class="page_limit free"></div><div class="page_limit"></div><p>New export orders declined at the fastest pace since the end of 2012, while inventories of inputs fell at the quickest rate in eight months.</p><p>"A renewed drop in total new work led to the weakest expansion of output since September 2013, with data suggesting that foreign demand was particularly weak," said Annabel Fiddes, economist at Markit.
