But David<MH1732> stayed<MH3427> in Jerusalem<MH3389>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Now at evening<MH6153> time<MH6256> David<MH1732> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> from his bed<MH4904> and walked<MH1980> around<MH1980> on the roof<MH1406> of the king’s<MH4428> house<MH1004>, and from the roof<MH1406> he saw<MH7200> a woman<MH802> bathing<MH7364>; and the woman<MH802> was very<MH3966> beautiful<MH2896a> in appearance<MH4758>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> sent<MH7971> <i>servants</i> and inquired<MH1875> about the woman<MH802>. And <i>someone</i> said<MH559>, “Is this<MH2088> not Bathsheba<MH1339>, the daughter<MH1323> of Eliam<MH463>, the wife<MH802> of Uriah<MH223a> the Hittite<MH2850>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>had her brought<MH3947>, and when she came<MH935> to him, he slept<MH7901> with her; and when she had purified<MH6942> herself from her uncleanness<MH2932a>, she returned<MH7725> to her house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But the woman<MH802> conceived<MH2029>; so she sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> and informed<MH5046> David<MH1732>, and said<MH559>, “I am pregnant<MH2030>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> to Joab<MH3097>: “Send<MH7971> me Uriah<MH223a> the Hittite<MH2850>.” So Joab<MH3097> sent<MH7971> Uriah<MH223a> to David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>When Uriah<MH223a> came<MH935> to him, David<MH1732> asked<MH7592> about Joab’s<MH3097> well-being<MH7965> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>that of the people<MH5971a>, and the condition<MH7965> of the war<MH4421>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Uriah<MH223a>, “Go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to your house<MH1004>, and wash<MH7364> your feet<MH7272>.” So Uriah<MH223a> left<MH3318> the king’s<MH4428> house<MH1004>, and a gift<MH4864> from the king<MH4428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>was sent<MH3318> after<MH310> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But Uriah<MH223a> slept<MH7901> at the door<MH6607> of the king’s<MH4428> house<MH1004> with all<MH3605> the servants<MH5650> of his lord<MH113>, and did not go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to his house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now when they informed<MH5046> David<MH1732>, saying<MH559>, “Uriah<MH223a> did not go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to his house<MH1004>,” David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Uriah<MH223a>, “Did you not come<MH935> from a journey<MH1870>? Why<MH4069> did you not go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to your house<MH1004>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And Uriah<MH223a> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, “The ark<MH727> and Israel<MH3478> and Judah<MH3063> are staying<MH3427> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>temporary<MH5521> shelters<MH5521>, and my lord<MH113> Joab<MH3097> and the servants<MH5650> of my lord<MH113> are camping<MH2583> in the open<MH6440> field<MH7704>. Should I then go<MH935> to my house<MH1004> to eat<MH398> and drink<MH8354> and to sleep<MH7901> with my wife<MH802>? By your life<MH2416a> and the life<MH2416a> of your soul<MH5315>, I will not do<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Uriah<MH223a>, “Stay<MH3427> here<MH2088> today<MH3117> also<MH1571>, and tomorrow<MH4279> I will let<MH7971> you go <i>back.</i>” So Uriah<MH223a> remained<MH3427> in Jerusalem<MH3389> that day<MH3117> and the day<MH4283> after<MH4283>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now David<MH1732> summoned<MH7121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Uriah, and he ate<MH398> and drank<MH8354> in his presence<MH6440>, and he made<MH7937> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Uriah drunk<MH7937>; and in the evening<MH6153> <i>Uriah</i> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to lie<MH7901> on his bed<MH4904> with his lord’s<MH113> servants<MH5650>, and he <i>still</i> did not go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to his house<MH1004>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So in the morning<MH1242> David<MH1732> wrote<MH3789> a letter<MH5612> to Joab<MH3097> and sent<MH7971> <i>it</i> by the hand<MH3027> of Uriah<MH223a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>He had written<MH3789> in the letter<MH5612> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>the following<MH559>: “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Station<MH3051> Uriah<MH223a> on the front<MH4136, 6440> line<MH4136, 6440> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>fiercest<MH2389> battle<MH4421> and pull<MH7725> back<MH7725> from him, so that he may be struck<MH5221> and killed<MH4191>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So it was as Joab<MH3097> kept<MH8104> watch<MH8104> on the city<MH5892b>, that he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>stationed<MH5414> Uriah<MH223a> at the place<MH4725> where<MH834> he knew<MH3045> there<MH8033> <i>were</i> valiant<MH2428> men<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and fought<MH3898a> against<MH854> Joab<MH3097>, and some<MH4480> of the people<MH5971a> among<MH4480> David’s<MH1732> servants<MH5650> fell<MH5307>; and Uriah<MH223a> the Hittite<MH2850> also<MH1571> died<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then Joab<MH3097> sent<MH7971> <i>a messenger</i> and reported<MH5046> to David<MH1732> all<MH3605> the events<MH1697> of the war<MH4421>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>He ordered<MH6680> the messenger<MH4397>, saying<MH559>, “When you have finished<MH3615> telling<MH1696> all<MH3605> the events<MH1697> of the war<MH4421> to the king<MH4428>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>then it shall be that if<MH518> the king’s<MH4428> wrath<MH2534> rises<MH5927> and he says<MH559> to you, ‘Why<MH4069> did you move<MH5066> against<MH413> the city<MH5892b> to fight<MH3898a>? Did you not know<MH3045> that they would shoot<MH3384> from the wall<MH2346>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Who<MH4310> struck<MH5221> Abimelech<MH40> the son<MH1121> of Jerubbesheth<MH3380>? Did a woman<MH802> not throw<MH7993> an upper<MH7393> millstone<MH6400> on him from the wall<MH2346> so that he died<MH4191> at Thebez<MH8405>? Why<MH4100> did you move<MH5066> against<MH413> the wall<MH2346>?’—then you shall say<MH559>, ‘Your servant<MH5650> Uriah<MH223a> the Hittite<MH2850> also<MH1571> died<MH4191>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So the messenger<MH4397> departed<MH1980> and came<MH935> and reported<MH5046> to David<MH1732> everything<MH3605> that Joab<MH3097> had sent<MH7971> him <i>to tell.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>The messenger<MH4397> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, “The men<MH376> prevailed<MH1396> against<MH5921> us and came<MH3318> out<MH3318> against<MH413> us in the field<MH7704>, but we <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>pressed<MH1961, 5921> them as far<MH5704> as the entrance<MH6607> of the gate<MH8179>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Also, the archers<MH3372b> shot<MH3372b> at your servants<MH5650> from the wall<MH2346>; so some<MH4480> of the king’s<MH4428> servants<MH5650> died<MH4191>, and your servant<MH5650> Uriah<MH223a> the Hittite<MH2850> also<MH1571> died<MH4191>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to the messenger<MH4397>, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you shall say<MH559> to Joab<MH3097>: ‘Do not let this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>displease<MH7489a, 5869> you, for the sword<MH2719> devours<MH398> one<MH2088> as well as another<MH2088>; <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>fight<MH2388, 4421> with<MH2388> determination<MH2388> against<MH413> the city<MH5892b> and overthrow<MH2040> it’; and <i>thereby</i> encourage<MH2388> him.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now when Uriah’s<MH223a> wife<MH802> heard<MH8085> that her husband<MH376> Uriah<MH223a> was dead<MH4191>, she mourned<MH5594> for her husband<MH1167>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/11-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>When the <i>time of</i> mourning<MH60> was<MH5674a> over<MH5674a>, David<MH1732> sent<MH7971> <i>servants</i> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>had her brought<MH622> to his house<MH1004> and she became<MH1961> his wife<MH802>; then she bore<MH3205> him a son<MH1121>.
