As the V&A grows into a family of museums - opening three new sites between 2023 and 2025 - and with ambitious exhibition and display programmes, the challenge facing the museum is to continue to balance the care of collections, increase access to them, and keep resource requirements sustainable. To address this challenge, the conservation department developed a new risk- and value-based policy to manage highly light-sensitive collections on display in its permanent galleries. This policy builds on the earlier risk-based approach to lighting policies and introduces value assessment, microfadometry and collection lifetimes as tools for optimal collections management to the wider organisation. A survey conducted in Germany and Austria suggests that the preference for mechanical cleaning methods over electrochemical methods may be influenced by traditional academic approaches. Various scientific methods, such as sectional microscopy, wood taxonomy, X-ray fluorescence microscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, strontium isotope ratio measurement, and radiocarbon dating, were employed to analyze the specific characteristics of the cabinets. The research findings reveal that the cabinets contain wood from species endemic to Japan, as well as urushi sap derived from Toxicodendron vernicifluum trees, either blended with sap from Toxicodendron succedanea harvested in North Vietnam or harvested in China. The cabinets' black appearance is attributed to a soot pigment commonly found in products from the early Edo period or earlier. The use of scientific methods not previously available has greatly enhanced our understanding of these cabinets, and this new knowledge should be accessible to both scholars and the general public.

STUDIES IN CONSERVATION (2023)

 Add to Collection

 Article Archaeology

Case Study: the Application of Trichogramma Evanescens Westwood (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) as a Novel Integrated Pest Management Solution against Webbing Clothes Moth Tineola Bisselliella Hummel (Lepidoptera: Tineidae) at Burghley House, Stamford, UK

Louise Shewry, Melinda Hey, Kelly Grimshaw

Summary: A trial was conducted in Burghley House, UK, to test the usage of parasitoid wasps as a method of integrated pest management against webbing clothes moths.
