It is a concept that encompasses both the physical universe and the spiritual dimensions that are part of God's creation. The Bible presents a multifaceted view of "worlds," reflecting the complexity and depth of God's handiwork.

Creation and the Physical World

The Bible begins with the account of creation, where God creates the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). This foundational statement sets the stage for understanding the physical world as a deliberate act of divine creation. The physical world is seen as good, as God declares His creation "very good" (Genesis 1:31). The physical world is a testament to God's power and creativity, as seen in Psalm 19:1: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands."

The Spiritual World

Beyond the physical realm, the Bible also speaks of a spiritual world. This includes the existence of angels, demons, and spiritual forces. Ephesians 6:12 states, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world's darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." This passage highlights the reality of spiritual warfare and the existence of a spiritual dimension that influences the physical world.

The World as a System

In the New Testament, the term "world" often refers to the system of human society that is in opposition to God. This is particularly evident in the writings of the Apostle John. In 1 John 2:15-17 , believers are warned, "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world. The world is passing away, along with its desires; but whoever does the will of God remains forever." Here, "world" refers to the sinful, fallen state of human society that is contrary to God's will.

The World to Come

The Bible also speaks of "the world to come," a future reality where God's kingdom is fully realized. Hebrews 2:5 mentions, "For it is not to angels that He has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking." This future world is characterized by the reign of Christ and the restoration of all things. Revelation 21:1 describes this new creation: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more."

Faith and the Worlds

Hebrews 11:3 provides insight into the relationship between faith and the worlds: "By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." This verse underscores the belief that the worlds, both seen and unseen, are the result of God's creative word and are understood through faith.

In summary, the concept of "worlds" in the Bible encompasses the physical universe, the spiritual realm, the fallen human system, and the future world to come. Each aspect reveals different dimensions of God's creation and His ultimate plan for redemption and restoration.
Greek
165. aion -- a space of time, an age
... eternal (2), eternity (1), ever* (2), forever (27), forever and ever (20), forevermore
(2), long ago (1), never* (1), old (1), time (1), world (7), worlds (1). ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/165.htm - 8k
Library

The Sympathy of the Two Worlds
... The Sympathy of the Two Worlds.
