<div class="entry-content"> <p>McKinney ISD will issue a MacBook Air laptop to every freshman next spring, following other districts that are equipping students with pricey personal devices.</p><p>The district plans to spend $6.4 million through 2018 to buy and set up about 8,400 Apple laptops for all high school students and their teachers. The funding will come from a portion of the $191 million bond package approved by voters in 2011.</p><p>Called “One 2 the World,” the program will make laptops part of the curriculum and gradually reduce students’ reliance on computer labs and traditional textbooks, said Lara Lindsey, director of instructional technology.</p><p>“I kind of see this device being kind of like their backpack,” Lindsey said. “Everything they need for school will be on it.”</p><p>Parents offered praise and criticism on the district’s Facebook page, where it announced the initiative. Some said it was a smart move to level the playing field and prepare children for college and careers. Others complained about the cost and called it unnecessary. The district is paying $744 each for the 11-inch models, which retail for $899 and up. </p><p>In May, school board members voted unanimously to pursue the program. </p><p>Other districts in North Texas have launched similar initiatives. Lewisville ISD rolled out iPad tablets in 2013 with plans to furnish them to every student from first to 12th grade by 2016. The 1-year-old program has drawn mixed reviews. </p><p>Irving ISD began giving laptops to all high school students a decade ago. Coppell ISD started its program last fall and opted for iPads.</p><p>McKinney ISD officials said they also studied programs in other parts of the state, including the McAllen and Clear Creek school districts.</p><p>“My biggest takeaway from the districts that we talked to was the importance of adult learning, of teaching teachers,” Lindsey said.</p><p>Teachers will be trained not on technical issues but on how to best use the laptops as a teaching tool, Lindsey said. Some students in each freshman class will also be trained to serve as “ambassadors” and support their peers with the technology.</p><p>The district is still working out the details of an insurance plan to cover repairs and lost machines. Also, funding from the operational budget will go toward hiring three technology support specialists and two instructional technology coordinators. </p><p>“Given the number of users you’ll have on a campus, we needed to expand the help desk,” school board President Curtis Rippee said.</p><p>Federal law requires schools to block children from accessing porn and other harmful content online. David Spann, chief information officer, said the laptops will include filters that work on and off campus. The district plans to host workshops to teach parents about cybersafety and other topics. </p><p>Students will be able to use their laptops for social media if a particular platform is used in class, Lindsey said. For example, second-graders researching penguins recently used Twitter to talk to an expert. </p><p>The district considered several computers, including tablets, Spann said. A group of students, teachers and administrators sampled the devices and was asked which ones would be more helpful with class work. </p><p>They favored two devices almost equally: the MacBook Air laptop and the Dell Venue tablet, Spann said.</p><p>In the end, the district chose the laptop to be consistent with younger students’ use of Apple technology in McKinney ISD schools, Spann said. MacBook Air computers also supported more applications than the other device, according to the district.</p><p>It’s unclear to what degree the laptops will save the district money in other areas, such as textbook purchases. The district will review digital materials during future textbook adoptions, Lindsey said. She also noted that conventional textbooks include digital resources that students will be able to use with their laptops.</p><p>McKinney ISD leaders will review the program periodically and plan to extend it beyond 2018 with more bond funding, Rippee said.
