And, taking them with <i>Him</i>, He retired privately to a city called Bethsaida. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But the multitudes, perceiving <i>it</i>, followed Him; and, having welcomed them, He was speaking to them concerning the Kingdom of God, and those having need of cure He healed.<p> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And the day began to decline. And the twelve, coming near, said to Him, "Send away the multitudes; that, going into the villages and country round about, they may lodge and find food; because we are here in a desert place." <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But He said to them, <FR>"Give ye them to eat."<Fr> And they said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fishes; unless we, going, should buy food for all this people." (For they were about five thousand men). <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And He said to His disciples, <FR>"Make them recline in companies of about fifty each."<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And they did so, and made them all recline. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And, taking the five loaves and the two fishes, looking up into Heaven, He blessed them, and broke, and kept giving to the disciples to set before the multitude. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And they ate, and were all filled. And there was taken up that which remained to them of broken pieces, twelve baskets.<p> <A name="19"></a><p class="hdg">Peter’s Confession of Christ<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/16.htm#13">Matthew 16:13–20</a>; <a href ="../mark/8.htm#27">Mark 8:27–30</a>; <a href ="../john/6.htm#67">John 6:67–71</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And it came to pass, as He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He asked them, saying, <FR>"Who do the multitudes say that I am?"<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And they, answering, said, 'John the Immerser;' and others, 'Elijah;' and others, 'that a certain prophet of the ancients arose.' <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"But who say ye that I am?"<Fr> And Peter, answering, said, "The Christ of God."<p> <A name="22"></a><p class="hdg">Christ’s Passion Foretold<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/16.htm#21">Matthew 16:21–23</a>; <a href ="../mark/8.htm#31">Mark 8:31–33</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And He, having admonished them, commanded <i>them</i> to tell this to no one; <A name="23"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>saying, <FR>"The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and high priests, and scribes; and be killed, and on the third day be raised up."<Fr><p> <A name="24"></a><p class="hdg">Take Up Your Cross<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/16.htm#24">Matthew 16:24–28</a>; <a href ="../mark/8.htm#34">Mark 8:34–38</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And He said to all, <FR>"If any one wishes to come after Me, let him disown himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><FR>For whosoever wishes to save his soul shall lose it; but whosoever <i>will lose</i> his soul for My sake, the same shall save it.<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>For what is a man profited, <i>in</i> having gained the whole world, but having lost or forfeited himself?<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>For whosoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed, when He cometh in His glory, and <i>in that</i> of the Father, and of the holy angels.<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>And I tell you truly, there are some of those standing here who will in no wise taste of death, till they see the Kingdom of God."<Fr><p> <A name="29"></a><p class="hdg">The Transfiguration<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/17.htm">Matthew 17:1–13</a>; <a href ="../mark/9.htm">Mark 9:1–13</a>; <a href ="../2_peter/1.htm#16">2 Peter 1:16–21</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And it came to pass, about eight days after these words, that, taking Peter, and John, and James, He went up into the mountain to pray. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And it came to pass, as He was praying, that the appearance of His countenance was altered, and His raiment became white and dazzling. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And, behold, two men were talking with Him, who, indeed, were Moses and Elijah; <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Now Peter and those with him had become heavy with sleep; but, having watched through <i>it</i>, they saw His glory, and the two men who were standing with Him. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And it came to pass, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here; and let us make three tents; one for Thee, one for Moses, and one for Elijah;" not knowing what he was saying. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Now, while he was saying these things, there came a cloud, and it was overshadowing them; and they feared, as they entered into the cloud. <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is My Son, the Chosen; hear ye Him." <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And, when the voice came, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and told no one, in those days, any of the things which they had seen.<p> <A name="38"></a><p class="hdg">The Boy with an Evil Spirit<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/17.htm#14">Matthew 17:14–18</a>; <a href ="../mark/9.htm#14">Mark 9:14–29</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And it came to pass on the next day, when they came down from the mountain, that a great multitude met Him. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And, behold, a man from the multitude cried, saying, "Teacher, I pray Thee to look upon my son, because he is my only begotten. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And, behold, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he cries out, and it convulses him with foaming, and with difficulty it departs from him, bruising him; <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>and I besought Thy disciples to cast it out, but they were not able." <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And Jesus answering, said, <FR>"O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? Bring your son here."<Fr> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And, while he was yet coming, the demon thrust him down, and greatly convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.<p> <A name="44"></a><p class="hdg">The Second Prediction of the Passion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/17.htm#22">Matthew 17:22–23</a>; <a href ="../mark/9.htm#30">Mark 9:30–32</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And they were all amazed at the Majesty of God! And while all were marvelling at all the things which He was doing, He said to His disciples, <A name="45"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span><FR>"Put ye these words into your ears; for the Son of Man is about to be delivered up into <i>the</i> hands of men."<Fr> <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>But they did not understand this saying; and it was veiled from them, that they might not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him concerning this saying.<p> <A name="47"></a><p class="hdg">The Greatest in the Kingdom<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/18.htm">Matthew 18:1–5</a>; <a href ="../mark/9.htm#33">Mark 9:33–41</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And there entered a reasoning among them, as to which of them should be greatest. <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Now Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their heart, taking a child, placed it by Himself, <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>and said to them, <FR>"Whosoever shall receive this child in My name, receives Me; and whosoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for he that is least among you all, the same is great."<Fr><p> <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>And John, answering, said, "Master, we saw one casting out demons in Thy name; and we forbade him, because he follows not with us." <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>And Jesus said to him, <FR>"Forbid him not: for he who is not against you is for you."<Fr><p> <A name="52"></a><p class="hdg">The Samaritans Reject Jesus<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>And it came to pass, when the days for receiving Him up were being completed, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem; <A name="53"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>and He sent forth messengers before His face; and, journeying <i>onward</i>, they entered into a village of Samaritans, so as to prepare for Him. <A name="54"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>And they did not receive Him, because His face was <i>as if He were</i> going to Jerusalem. <A name="55"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>And, seeing <i>it</i>, His disciples, James and John, said, "Lord, dost Thou wish that we bid fire come down from heaven, and consume them?" <A name="56"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>But, turning, He rebuked them. <A name="57"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>And they went on to another village.<p> <A name="58"></a><p class="hdg">The Cost of Discipleship<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/8.htm#18">Matthew 8:18–22</a>;
