It is a day on which students, parents and community members can demonstrate their appreciation for the contributions that teachers have made to their community.</p> <h2>Message from Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO Governor of Queensland to teachers </h2> <p class="para1" style="margin-bottom: 0;">Her Excellency wishes all Queensland teachers an enjoyable World Teachers Day. - </p> <p style="margin-top: 0;"><em>"On the occasion of World Teachers' Day 2010, I am delighted to express my sincere appreciation, on behalf of the parents and pupils of Queensland schools and the broader Queensland community, for your dedication and commitment to delivering a quality education to all your students."</em>  <a href="documents/GovernorofQueenslandmessagetoteachers.pdf">Read more</a></p> <h2>What is World Teachers’ Day?</h2> <p>World Teachers’ Day was inaugurated on 5th October 1994 by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to commemorate the 1966 joint signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. In adopting this recommendation, governments unanimously recognised the importance of competent, qualified and motivated teachers in society.</p> <p>Internationally World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the first Friday in October. The concept forms part of the renewal theme for teachers who are constantly renewing their knowledge and skills to ensure their profession remains vital and effective.  The nurturing character also depicts the <a href="excellence-awards.html">QCT excellence in teaching awards</a> featuring two categories—excellence in teaching and excellence in beginning to teach.
