If it does, it is thanks to the ants’ nest-like “functional anarchy” of the users who daily correct, contribute, and check its articles. This work focuses on the possible interactions of the triangle students–teacher–Wikipedia, considering that until now the academic world has had mixed feelings towards Wikipedia. From a theoretical point of view, a list of possible means of contribution to Wikipedia by university-level students with real-life examples is given. These include -and are not limited to- writing new articles, proof-reading existing ones, translating from one language version to another, creating audio-visual content, and drawing info-graphics. For a more empirical approach, a project was carried out at Ca’ Foscari University (Venice, Italy), with two cohorts of students who were given the possibility of choosing to contribute to Wikipedia as part of one of their exams. One such medium is Wikipedia, an internet-based encyclopedia that can be used and edited by anyone, anywhere. Managed by the California-based Wikimedia Foundation and written by volunteers from various backgrounds, Wikipedia offers information in more than two hundred languages. This paper provides an overview of two different programs that have used Wikipedia to promote education: the Wikipedia Education Program and the Papat Limpad competition. Each program offers a different model for educators and persons with an interest in education to use Wikipedia. In the first model, educators use a formal classroom setting and programmed curriculum to teach students copyediting, definition, photography, writing, and researching skills, with or without the support of Wikimedia volunteers. In the second model, a competition model is used to teach students how to write in a local language. And while many academics have discovered new and easier avenues online to distribute their scholarship to colleagues as well as the public, the content on the sixth most visited website, Wikipedia, remains largely untouched. Instead, Wikipedia articles are written and edited by an increasingly smaller circle of contributors: 90% male and largely Western, with half living in the US, Germany, Russia, UK, or Italy. Even with 8,000 people a second visiting the site (including teachers and students), few are curious enough to peek behind the curtain and see who is editing, why, and what kind of quality control checks are in place. Not only does the research and writing quality vary widely, but these contributors cannot help but pass on their biases and assumptions. Several WikiProjects have been launched to raise awareness and address the lack of diversity in the online encyclopedia that “anyone can edit”, but their impact will remain limited as long as Wikipedia is still eschewed by academia. Meanwhile, younger generations are growing up with Wikipedia as the norm – it is often the first listing on search engines and the main source of information on a topic since competitors have been unable to support fee-based models. Although many academics still discourage using it, students ignore them because they see no problem with crowd-sourced information and are not educated on potential issues with the makeup of the crowd. But what if academics – especially those in the Humanities more likely to be attuned to intersectional issues of race, class, gender, and privilege – actually made up more of the crowd? What if they led by example and taught their students to contribute well-researched, substantive information to this popular digital cultural resource? The potential for academia to both better engage with the public and help students become critical digital citizens through a site like Wikipedia is incredible. Unlike in STEM, the Humanities have almost equal or higher percentages of female students, so more women would learn how to contribute and offer their perspective, also probably creating articles for notable women who still lack articles. Looking globally, if Humanities classes included a component on editing Wikipedia, students could see themselves as active contributors to knowledge rather than passive consumers of yet another Western perspective. When knowledge about a world of 7 billion people is controlled by a small group of around 31,000 of them, it is high time for academia to become involved, to instruct students in how to engage in open access scholarship, leading by example.
