Plasma contains nutrients and waste products, along with chemicals and matter needed for <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/coagulation-of-blood" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">clotting</a>, or sealing a wound before too much blood escapes. The rest of blood is made of tiny cells. Most are <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/red-blood-cell" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">red blood cells</a>, which distribute oxygen throughout your body and carry away the waste gas carbon dioxide, which is released from your <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/lung" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">lungs</a>. The remaining cells are <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/white-blood-cell" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">white blood cells</a>, which protect you from infection by attacking and destroying disease-causing germs that enter your body. Red blood cells are the smallest cells in your body. But what they lack in size they make up for in number: in a drop of blood the size of the head of a pin there are 5 million red blood cells. In that same drop are 10,000 white blood cells and 250,000 <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/platelet" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">platelets</a>, small ovals of matter that gather wherever a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/blood-vessel" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">blood vessel</a> is injured to plug the hole and help form a clot.</p><!--[P]--><!--[MOD]--><span class="MOD"></span></div><!--[LIST-ITEM-2]--><span class="LIST-ITEM-2"></span></li><li><h2>Why is blood red?</h2><div><!--[BP]--><p class="topic-paragraph">As the young <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/red-blood-cell" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">red blood cell</a> grows and takes on an adult form in the marrow of the bone, it loses its <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/nucleus-biology" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">nucleus</a>, and it increases its production of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/hemoglobin" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">hemoglobin</a>. Hemoglobin is the red pigment, or color of blood, and contains iron, combined with protein. (Oxygen combined with iron is red; the more oxygen iron has bound to it, the redder it is.) When blood passes through the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/lung" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">lungs</a>, oxygen attaches itself to the hemoglobin of the red cells. From there, the red blood cells carry the oxygen through the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/artery" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">arteries</a> and the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/capillary" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">capillaries</a> to all other cells of the body. The arteries appear reddish because the iron in the blood gives up its oxygen to the cells that need it as the red blood cells travel throughout the body. By the time the blood is back on its way to the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/heart" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">heart</a> and then to the lungs, it has less than half as much oxygen as it did before. Neurons take in and send out electrical signals, called <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/nerve-impulse" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">impulses</a>, that control or respond to everything your body does and feels. The brain is constantly receiving messages and sending them out all the time; it handles millions of nerve impulses every second.</p><!--[P4]--><!--[MOD4]--><span class="MOD4"></span></div><!--[LIST-ITEM-4]--><span class="LIST-ITEM-4"></span></li><li><h2>How many parts are there to the brain?</h2><div><!--[BP]--><p class="topic-paragraph">The human <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/brain" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">brain</a> is divided into three main parts: the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/cerebrum" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">cerebrum</a>, the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/cerebellum" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">cerebellum</a>, and the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/brainstem" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">brainstem</a>. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain (about 85 percent of its total weight). It controls emotions, thought, memory, and speech. It is divided into a right and left side, called hemispheres, and each side is divided further into parts called lobes. Its thick outer covering, called the cortex, is made up of a type of tissue called <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/gray-matter" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">gray matter</a>. The cerebellum coordinates the kinds of movements we don’t usually think about: it helps us walk upright and in a straight line, it keeps us balanced so we don’t tip over, and it gives us coordination. The brainstem connects the brain with the spinal cord. It controls our body’s vital processes, such as breathing, digestion, and heart rate.</p><!--[P]--><!--[MOD]--><span class="MOD"></span></div><!--[LIST-ITEM-5]--><span class="LIST-ITEM-5"></span></li><li><h2>How can you measure a heartbeat?</h2><div><!--[BP]--><p class="topic-paragraph">Doctors measure <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/heart-rate" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">heart rate</a>—the number of contractions of the heart (or heartbeats) in one minute—by taking a person’s <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/pulse-physiology" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">pulse</a> or listening to the heart with a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/stethoscope" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">stethoscope</a>. Your heart rate can be taken at any spot on the body at which an <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/artery" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">artery</a> is close to the surface and a pulse can be felt, such as the wrist or the neck. When resting, the average adult human heartbeats at about 70 beats per minute (for males) and 75 beats per minute (for females), although this rate is often less for athletes. A toddler’s heart beats about 100 to 130 times per minute, while an older child’s about 90 to 110 times per minute and an adolescent’s about 80 to 100 times per minute. When you have a lot of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/carbon-dioxide" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">carbon dioxide</a>—the waste gas produced by body processes—in your blood, your brain gets the message and tells your <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/lung" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">lungs</a> to exhale and dispose of it.
