The best of which I could find would be with students in college, not just for education but for all on campus activities.<br/> <br/> Let me just start off by going into the ebook feature. Years ago while going for my bio degree I would lug around at least four books a day to all my classes, a lab kit, notebooks, and study guides. If Apple were able to get Thomson/Pearson publishing on their list of publishers that's a good 20 lbs less of books and bulk that needs to be carried. Sure any eReader can get those books in their store but you need color illustrations and high resolution pictures for much of anatomy or organic chemistry. Plus as the technology evolves the iPad has the potential of lacing in interactive demonstrations right into the eTextbooks instead of the add on cd that many textbooks are included with these days.<br/> <br/> Now anyone that has gone through our higher education system knows that no matter how many computers or labs there are in a school there's times of the day when you just can't find one to use. The solution for me was a laptop when I went to school but needless to say some laptops are less portable than others. The iPad is very portable and with WiFi you can get on to most schools connections fairly easy. Now the iPad doesn't replace a full function computer but it does do what most students would need, to go on the internet, do research and the ability to write papers. Now it might be a little cumbersome to use that virtual keyboard to type a paper but it allows you to start while waiting for a computer to open up and I'm sure someone will release a very portable keyboard attachment as well. And lets face it, most people use those computers in the labs to kill time anyway.<br/> <br/> Speaking of killing time when I was going to school I had to spend two hours on a train everyday going to and from school, not to speak about the time in between classes. I would entertain myself by reading, listening to music or podcasts, playing simple cellphone games. Basically everything this iPad can do. Plus with the iPad you're able to watch movies and videos on a decent sized screen. It's a simple and fairly inexpensive entertainment device. Also if Apple will let you stream your iTunes library to your devices one day the need for larger storage becomes less important.<br/> <br/> The one thing that I feel this is missing in order to make it a great education device and would be a great benefit to myself personally is a stylus form of input. If this device had the ability to recognize handwriting and allow the user to take class notes on it I would highly recommend it to all students. Now I say stylus for a few reasons. One being, that soft keyboard isn't going to cut it for some people and those desks in lecture halls can be a bit too small for actual keyboards sometimes. Also the problem with either keyboard input option is that sometimes you need to make a new symbol that you don't have time to be looking around to see how to input that, or you have to draw a picture or diagram in your notes that would be much easier with a stylus. Sure you could do it the old fashioned way of using an actual notebook but doing this digitally will allow you to organize your notes, email them, save them, edit them later, and search them while studying.<br/> <br/> I really think this is a device, or one like it, that could replace a laptop/desktop for a good number of students in college. Especially those living on campus that need a computer for simple tasks of the internet and word processing but not an overpowered machine. Being a college student, that is exactly what I had been hoping for. I would be <i>more than willing</i> to fork over $500 bones to Apple if the iPad had the following:<br/> <br/> -Some kind of <b>stylus-type input</b> for note-taking in class<br/> <br/> -The right <b>note-taking software</b> to make it worth even trying to take notes in class on it (something to compete with MS OneNote - but of course in Touch format, and in <i>Apple style</i>).<br/> <br/> -ideally, even <b>basic multi-tasking</b> of some sort... to enable you to quickly go back and forth between your iBook-textbooks and your notes... (and heck - even simultaneously listen to music or podcasts) and all without having to close a program and return to the home screen in between.<br/> <br/> -being an independent, <b>standalone device</b> - freed from having to sync to another computer, making this capable of <i>replacing</i> a laptop for a college student's basic needs rather than just being a $500 <i>complement</i> to one. <br/> <br/> <b>Aa few other options wouldn't hurt either, such as...</b><br/> <br/> -<b>Handwriting Recognition</b> & conversion would be a huge plus, as it would make the text portion of notes a whole lot easier to organize and read.<br/> <br/> -Some way to <b>highlight, write in the margins of, and search iBooks</b>.... for easy future reference to what you've read/marked in your textbooks.<br/> <br/> -heck, a <b>USB port</b> that <i>at least</i> works with thumb drives... and the addition of <i>some</i> sort of basic <b>file browser</b> - to make organizing and transferring notes and files between the iPad and other computers a heck of a lot easier.<br/> <br/> Anyway... those things were really the heart and soul of what I was hoping for from the tablet. I suppose though, that that's not what Apple had in mind for the iPad.<br/> <br/> In the end... I think that the iPad itself - as a device - is extremely cool, useful, and fun. But I have a hard time believing that it's the best they could come up with to close the gap between iPods and MacBooks. In the Apple lineup it looks lame - just an iTouch+ or something... and it offers almost <i>no unique functionality</i> from the rest of the lineup. <br/> <br/> In other words... if you don't have an iPhone or iPod Touch (or a MacBook, really), the iPad would be an <i>amazing</i> breakthrough device. But if you own any of those... it's not worth the money it would cost you to own an iPad, too. The textbook industry is one of the biggest rackets out there so any relief from those ridiculous prices would be welcome. <br/> <br/> Stylus input would be easy. I can guarantee you that Pogo is going to release a version of their stylus for it.
