The new informational professionals have been reinvented from traditional librarians and archivists into contemporary memory makers. These librarian-archivists apply their tacit personal expertise, experience, and skills by valuing sources, as well as their expertise of knowing whom to ask about who knows what.

Memory Makers as Foxes

Drawing on Ancient Greek soldier-poet Archilochus’ fabled fox, memory makers should be thinking reflexively: mapping all the pathways through the ecology; finding ideas from many sources; looking for the unexpected; joining the dots by integrating, synthesising and aggregating insights; and willingly, readily reinventing other ideas to make sense of them when necessary.

Who Knows Who Knows?

The true value of the memory makers is found in recognising that know-how involves the formation of social relationships and the development of social capital, which provides access to experts and their knowledge. Like know-how, know-who develops over time, through experience and engagement in social practice. The rise in the interest in social capital is being driven by changes in the organisational climate in knowledge management and recordkeeping informatics.

Explosion (Divergent) to Implosion (Convergent) Thinking

This book reasons that assembled reasoning generated from the collective intelligence of swarms of communities of interested participants creates a synergy between personal knowing and digitised data, collected through artificial intelligence. As discussed in this book, tagging through arranging into managed folksonomies when documenting information could allow memory makers to manage the volume, variety and velocity of information by linking collective intelligence to artificial intelligence systems. The rich diversity of divergent thinking through tagging in collective intelligence is managed by the convergent thinking of artificial intelligence and the metadata schema housed in the folksonomy. The metadata schema links the author’s insight to that of other associated researchers, thereby supporting convergence.

Memory Curators Remember through Curation

These two concepts create the synergy that memory makers could use to make sense of situations and explain through narration the nature of change. Memory makers, as knowledge managers, curate personally and collaboratively evolving knowing and information, and provide vital transactional and translative skills and services for these new peer-production co-innovation online users, found in the swarms of collective intelligence.

The value of the book rests with the idea that memory makers play the role of striking a dynamic equilibrium that supports synergy, rather than competition, between humans and artificial intelligence. The key professions of the memory makers are: digital registrars (collectors and protecters of business information), systems analysts (managers of the wired memories of the business system) and feedback auditors (those who understand business operations and activity). The widespread dissemination of this notion is a work-in-progress.

Wired Records: From Knowledge Management to Cybernetics

I am writing about the complex changes in what used to be called knowledge management, and what is still called recordkeeping informatics. Part of my analysis is that, as computing systems move towards automated digital workflows (and possibly, eventually, some form of the Internet of Things (IOT)), records will become systematic and systemic, and a new type of record will be required to make data and other intellectual exchanges legally, financially, managerially and intellectually accountable and available as forms of real-time system feedback. I have labelled these new records ‘curated records’. Business systems will become wired memories. Part of knowledge management may be evolving and morphing into systems feedback science. Data may be the new oil, but I believe digital data schemas (read profiles) will become the new gold. Digital recordkeeping informatics will be the system which supports emerging robotics as it evolves towards accountable and controllable cybernetics.

Summary: Joining the Dots

Firstly, recordkeeping is the systematic application of information culture to support metadata to identify records, and thereby facilitating access to information about business processes. Secondly, the Remembering Continuum is about curation. Collective intelligence creates assembled reasoning through the collaborative thinking of Action Learning and Wegner’s transactive memory systems. This should lead to calls for the management of research, business and corporate data as curated microrecords. Thirdly, compiling is curating, and compiling is another form of authorship, leading to the memory curator-memory archivist.

Andrew McFadzean has qualifications and experience in library science, archives and digital recordkeeping.
