and Caiaphas<MG2533>, the word<MG4487> of God<MG2316> came<MG1096> to John<MG2491>, the son<MG5207> of Zechariah<MG2197>, in the wilderness<MG2048>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And he came<MG2064> into all<MG3956> the region<MG4066> around<MG4066> the Jordan<MG2446>, preaching<MG2784> a baptism<MG908> of repentance<MG3341> <span LOWERED<MG5013>; <t><p class="indent1">THE CROOKED<MG4646> WILL BECOME<MG1510, 1519> STRAIGHT<MG2117>, <t><p class="indent1">AND THE ROUGH<MG5138> ROADS<MG3598> SMOOTH<MG3006>; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>AND ALL<MG3956> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>FLESH<MG4561> WILL SEE<MG3708> THE SALVATION<MG4992> OF GOD<MG2316>!’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So<MG3767> he was saying<MG3004> to the crowds<MG3793> who were going<MG1607> out<MG1607> to be baptized<MG907> by him, “You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>offspring<MG1081> of vipers<MG2191>, who<MG5101> warned<MG5263> you to flee<MG5343> from the wrath<MG3709> to<MG3195> come<MG3195>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> produce<MG4160> fruits<MG2590> that are consistent<MG514> with repentance<MG3341>, and do not start<MG757> saying<MG3004> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>to yourselves<MG1438>, ‘We have<MG2192> Abraham<MG11> <i>as our</i> father<MG3962>,’ for I say<MG3004> to you that from these<MG3778> stones<MG3037> God<MG2316> is able<MG1410> to raise<MG1453> up<MG1453> children<MG5043> for Abraham<MG11>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But indeed<MG2532> the axe<MG513> is already<MG2235> being laid<MG2749> at the root<MG4491> of the trees<MG1186>; so<MG3767> every<MG3956> tree<MG1186> that does not bear<MG4160> good<MG2570> fruit<MG2590> is cut<MG1581> down<MG1581> and thrown<MG906> into the fire<MG4442>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the crowds<MG3793> were questioning<MG1905> him, saying<MG3004>, “Then<MG3767> what<MG5101> are we to do<MG4160>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And he would answer<MG611> and say<MG3004> to them, “The one who has<MG2192> two<MG1417> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>tunics<MG5509> is to share<MG3330> with the one who has<MG2192> none<MG3361>; and the one who has<MG2192> food<MG1033> is to do<MG4160> likewise<MG3668>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> even<MG2532> tax<MG5057> collectors<MG5057> came<MG2064> to be baptized<MG907>, and they said<MG3004> to him, “Teacher<MG1320>, what<MG5101> are we to do<MG4160>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And he said<MG3004> to them, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Collect<MG4238> no<MG3367> more<MG4183> than<MG3844> what you have been ordered<MG1299> to.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And soldiers<MG4754> also<MG2532> were questioning<MG1905> him, saying<MG3004>, “What<MG5101> are we to do<MG4160>, we as<MG2532> well<MG2532>?” And he said<MG3004> to them, “Do not extort<MG1286> money<MG1286> from anyone<MG3367>, nor<MG3366> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>harass<MG4811> <i>anyone,</i> and be content<MG714> with your wages<MG3800>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> while the people<MG2992> were<MG4328> in<MG4328> a<MG4328> state<MG4328> of<MG4328> expectation<MG4328> and they all<MG3956> were thinking<MG1260> carefully<MG1260> in their hearts<MG2588> about<MG4012> John<MG2491>, whether<MG3379> he himself<MG846> perhaps<MG3379> was the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Christ<MG5547>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>John<MG2491> responded<MG611> to them all<MG3956>, saying<MG3004>, “As for me, I baptize<MG907> you with water<MG5204>; but He is coming<MG2064> who is mightier<MG2478> than I, and I am<MG1510> not fit<MG2425> to untie<MG3089> the straps<MG2438> of His sandals<MG5266>; He will baptize<MG907> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>with the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151> and fire<MG4442>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>His winnowing<MG4425> fork<MG4425> is in His hand<MG5495> to thoroughly<MG1245a> clear<MG1245a> His threshing<MG257> floor<MG257>, and to gather<MG4863> the wheat<MG4621> into His barn<MG596>; but He will burn<MG2618> up<MG2618> the chaff<MG892> with unquenchable<MG762> fire<MG4442>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So<MG3767> with many<MG4183> other<MG2087> exhortations<MG3870> he preached<MG2097> the gospel<MG2097> to the people<MG2992>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But when Herod<MG2264> the tetrarch<MG5068a> was reprimanded<MG1651> by him regarding<MG4012> Herodias<MG2266>, his brother’s<MG80> wife<MG1135>, and regarding<MG4012> all<MG3956> the evil<MG4190> things<MG4190> which<MG3739> Herod<MG2264> had done<MG4160>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span><i>Herod</i> also<MG2532> added<MG4369> this<MG3778> to them all<MG3956>: he locked<MG2623> John<MG2491> up<MG2623> in prison<MG5438>. <p class="hdg">Jesus Is Baptized</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/3-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when<MG1722> all<MG537a> the people<MG2992> were baptized<MG907>, Jesus<MG2424> also<MG2532> was baptized<MG907>, and while He was praying<MG4336>, heaven<MG3772> was opened<MG455>, <span class="reftext"><a
