and the prophets<MH5029> of God<MH426> were with them, supporting<MH5583> them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>At that time<MH2166> Tattenai<MH8674>, the governor<MH6347> of <i>the province</i> beyond<MH5675> the <i>Euphrates</i> River<MH5103>, and Shethar-bozenai<MH8370> and their colleagues<MH3675> came<MH858> to them and spoke<MH560> to them as<MH3652> follows<MH3652>: “Who<MH4479> issued<MH7761> you a decree<MH2942> to rebuild<MH1124> this<MH1836> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>temple<MH1005> and to finish<MH3635> this<MH1836> structure<MH846>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then<MH116> we told<MH560> them accordingly<MH3660> what<MH4479> the names<MH8036> of the men<MH1400> were who<MH1768> were reconstructing<MH1124> this<MH1836> building<MH1147>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But the eye<MH5870a> of their God<MH426> was on the elders<MH7868> of the Jews<MH3062>, and they did not stop<MH989> them until<MH5705> the report<MH2942> could reach<MH1981> Darius<MH1868>, and then<MH116> the decree<MH5407> concerning<MH5922> it could be sent<MH8421> back<MH8421>. <p class="hdg">Enemies Write to Darius</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><i>This is</i> the copy<MH6573> of the letter<MH104> that Tattenai<MH8674>, the governor<MH6347> of <i>the province</i> beyond<MH5675> the <i>Euphrates</i> River<MH5103>, and Shethar-bozenai<MH8370> and his colleagues<MH3675> the officials<MH671a>, who<MH1768> were beyond<MH5675> the River<MH5103>, sent<MH7972> to Darius<MH1868> the king<MH4430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>They sent<MH7972> the report<MH6600> to him in which it was written<MH3790> as follows<MH1836>: “To Darius<MH1868> the king<MH4430>, all<MH3606> peace<MH8001>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>May it be<MH3046> known<MH3046> to the king<MH4430> that we have gone<MH236> to the province<MH4083> of Judah<MH3061>, to the house<MH1005> of the great<MH7229> God<MH426> which<MH1932> is being built<MH1124> with large<MH1560> stones<MH69>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>beams<MH636> are being laid<MH7761> in the walls<MH3797>; and this<MH1791> work<MH5673> is being performed<MH5648> with great<MH629> care<MH629> and is succeeding<MH6744> in their hands<MH3028>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then<MH116> we asked<MH7593> those<MH479> elders<MH7868> and said<MH560> to them as follows<MH3660>: ‘Who<MH4479> issued<MH7761> you a decree<MH2942> to rebuild<MH1124> this<MH1836> temple<MH1005> and to finish<MH3635> this<MH1836> structure<MH846>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>We also<MH638> asked<MH7593> them their names<MH8036> so as to inform<MH3046> you, in<MH1768> order<MH1768> that<MH1768> we might write<MH3790> down<MH3790> the names<MH8036> of the men<MH1400> who<MH1768> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>in charge<MH7217>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>answered<MH8421, 6600> us as<MH3660> follows<MH3660>, saying<MH560>, ‘We are the servants<MH5649> of the God<MH426> of heaven<MH8065> and earth<MH772>, and are rebuilding<MH1124> the temple<MH1005> that was built<MH1124> many<MH7690> years<MH8140> ago<MH6928>, which a great<MH7229> king<MH4430> of Israel<MH3479> built<MH1124> and finished<MH3635>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But because<MH4481, 1768> our fathers<MH2> provoked<MH7265> the God<MH426> of heaven<MH8065> to<MH7265> wrath<MH7265>, He handed<MH3052, 3028> them over<MH3052> to Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020> king<MH4430> of Babylon<MH895>, the Chaldean<MH3779>, <i>who</i> destroyed<MH5642b> this<MH1836> temple<MH1005> and deported<MH1541> the people<MH5972> to Babylon<MH895>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>However<MH1297>, in the first<MH2298> year<MH8140> of Cyrus<MH3567> king<MH4430> of Babylon<MH895>, King<MH4430> Cyrus<MH3567> issued<MH7761> a decree<MH2942> to rebuild<MH1124> this<MH1836> house<MH1005> of God<MH426>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Also<MH638> the gold<MH1722> and silver<MH3702> utensils<MH3984> of the house<MH1005> of God<MH426> which<MH1768> Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020> had taken<MH5312> from the temple<MH1965> in Jerusalem<MH3390> and brought<MH2987> them to the temple<MH1965> of Babylon<MH895>, King<MH4430> Cyrus<MH3567> took<MH5312> them<MH1994> from the temple<MH1965> of Babylon<MH895> and they were given<MH3052> to one whose name<MH8036> was Sheshbazzar<MH8340>, whom<MH1768> he had appointed<MH7761> governor<MH6347>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And he said<MH560> to him, “Take<MH5376> these<MH429> utensils<MH3984>, go<MH236> <i>and</i> deposit<MH5182> them in the temple<MH1965> in Jerusalem<MH3390>, and have the house<MH1005> of God<MH426> rebuilt<MH1124> in its place<MH870>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then<MH116> that Sheshbazzar<MH8340> came<MH858> <i>and</i> laid<MH3052> the foundations<MH787> of the house<MH1005> of God<MH426> in Jerusalem<MH3390>; and from then<MH116> until<MH5705> now<MH3705> it has been under<MH1124> construction<MH1124> and it is not <i>yet</i> completed<MH8000>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And now<MH3705>, if<MH2006> it pleases<MH2869> the king<MH4430>, let a search<MH1240> be conducted<MH1240> in the king’s<MH4430> treasure<MH1596> house<MH1005>, which<MH1768> is there<MH8536> in Babylon<MH895>, as to whether<MH2006> a decree<MH2942> was issued<MH7761> by King<MH4430> Cyrus<MH3567> to rebuild<MH1124> this<MH1791> house<MH1005> of God<MH426> in Jerusalem<MH3390>;
