In a statement marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Sudan’s foreign ministry said “official authorities and relevant organizations” had documented the crimes, adding that the actual number of victims was likely far higher. The ministry said the RSF had not conducted credible investigations into the abuses committed by its fighters, which also included genocide, forced displacement and attacks on civilians. “The militia uses rape as a weapon of war to force citizens to evacuate their villages and homes, to settle its mercenaries and punish communities that reject its presence,” the statement said. It accused the RSF of kidnapping and holding hundreds of women hostage, subjecting them to sexual exploitation and forced domestic labour. Girls were also being trafficked within and outside of Sudan, it said. The RSF did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sudan Tribune was unable to verify the ministry’s claims independently. The conflict between the RSF and Sudan’s army has raged since …

The post Sudan says RSF committed 500 rapes, used sexual slavery as weapon of war appeared first on Sudan Tribune.

RSF accused of “systematic” violence against women in Sudan’s Al-Jazirah

SudanTribune

Editor's Picks

Human rights

News

SAF RSF fighting

Women issues

November 24, 2024 (NAIROBI) – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are committing systematic violence against women and girls in Sudan’s Al-Jazirah state, according to women’s rights activists. Speaking at a news briefing on Saturday, activists said the violence erupted on October 21, following the defection of senior RSF commanders to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The RSF have controlled villages in Al-Jazirah since December 2023. However, they have recently mobilized reinforcements from Khartoum and the Eastern Nile area to carry out attacks, according to the activists. “This is not about capturing new territory,” said Hala al-Karib, regional director of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA). “These actions signify a systematic escalation of violence in areas they (RSF) already control.” Eyewitness accounts describe systematic assaults on villages, including indiscriminate use of advanced weaponry against unarmed civilians. “Entire families have been wiped out,” al-Karib said. “The scale of devastation includes children and the elderly.” Sexual violence has become a hallmark of the RSF’s campaign, with reports of systematic door-to-door attacks targeting women and girls. Over 100 villages have been affected, with widespread accounts of abductions and rapes. Al-Karib shared harrowing accounts of suicides among women and girls …

The post RSF accused of “systematic” violence against women in Sudan’s Al-Jazirah appeared first on Sudan Tribune.

Sudan faces famine as world looks away, NRC chief warns

SudanTribune

Human rights

Humanitarian

News

SAF RSF fighting

November 23, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – The head of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) issued a stark warning on Wednesday, saying the world is ignoring a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions unfolding in Sudan, where millions teeter on the brink of famine. “This is the world’s worst crisis, but we are met with deafening silence,” NRC Secretary-General Jan Egeland said after a visit to the conflict-ridden country. “We must wake up the world before famine engulfs a generation of children.” Egeland, who visited Darfur and eastern Sudan, described widespread violence and displacement. “Entire villages destroyed, civilians executed, women raped,” he said, highlighting the devastating impact of indiscriminate attacks. More than 2,500 people were killed and over 250,000 displaced in October alone, he said. The conflict has triggered the largest displacement crisis globally, with 11 million people uprooted within Sudan and another 3 million seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. “In Darfur, I met women barely surviving, eating one meal of boiled leaves a day,” Egeland said. An estimated 24 million people – half of Sudan’s population – are facing acute food insecurity, with 1.5 million on the verge of famine. The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), on Sunday, issued a statement ahead of the 8th South Sudan’s Annual Governors’ Forum commencing on November 25 and ending on 29 November. Annually held, the forum is the highest policy platform that brings together policy actors to Juba to deliberate on a wide range of policy issues around governance, economy, security and peace. The Executive Director of CPA, Ter Manyang Gatwech stressed the need for accountability while questioning why resolutions from previous governors’ forum have not been implemented. “There is a problem either within the office of the president or among ten governors and three administrators regarding the implementation of the resolutions from the 6th and 7th Governor’s Forums. In 2022, the Governors were tasked with implementing peace initiatives to foster reconciliation among the divided people of South Sudan. However, none of them have implemented any of the resolutions from these forums,” he explained. Gatwech said the forum should not serve as a platform where government officials waste significant amount of money, which could benefit ordinary …

The post Implement governors’ forum resolutions, urges civil society body appeared first on Sudan Tribune.

South Sudan’s Kiir appoints new National Liberation Council member

umajulius

News

Politics

South Sudan

November 24, 2024 (JUBA) – President Salva Kiir has appointed a new member of the Sudan people Liberation Movement (SPLM) National Liberation Council (NLC). Kiir, the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) television reported, named Peter Kuot Jiel as a new NLC member, replacing James Deng Wal. The president’s decree did not give reasons why changes were made in the NLC. The NCL is the legislative organ of the country’s ruling SPLM party. In September, South Sudan’s parties to the peace agreement, extended the transitional period until December 2026, citing the need to complete the implementation process. Also postponed was an election which was to be held in December 2024. Abushok camp houses some 400,000 people displaced by conflict. More than 60% of the camp’s residents have already fled to the town of Tawila and other areas in Jebel Marra due to previous attacks by the RSF. “Continuing its series of crimes and violations against citizens, the Rapid Support Forces bombed the Abushok camp market with more than ten shells,” the Abushok camp emergency room said in a statement. Eyewitnesses told Sudan Tribune that RSF artillery also targeted civilian areas in the western and southern neighbourhoods of El Fasher, as well as the city centre. The shelling also hit the headquarters of the 6th Infantry Division, El Fasher Airport and surrounding areas, witnesses said. In response, a Sudanese military warplane carried out airstrikes targeting RSF positions in the eastern and southern parts of El Fasher, causing powerful explosions and sending plumes of smoke into the air. The army announced earlier on Saturday that it had recaptured Sinjah, the capital of Sennar state, following intense battles with the RSF. The army retook the city after mobilizing forces from Al Dinder, Al Suki, Sennar, and Blue Nile. These forces advanced slowly, recapturing towns and villages along the way. “RSF elements looted the resources and money of the Sudanese people, and they are now on their way to South Sudan,” Colonel Abbadi Al-Tahir Al-Zain, commander of the mobile force that retook Sinjah, said in a video statement “Our message to the government of South Sudan is not to allow them to cross the border. We will pursue them wherever they go.” Al-Zain affirmed the army’s determination to pursue the remaining RSF elements to the border with South Sudan. He said the RSF suffered heavy losses in lives and military equipment during the battle for Sinja. Following the victory in Sinjah, the army and its allies have tightened their grip on RSF forces in Sennar state and the Blue Nile region, cutting off key supply routes. In a statement, Burhan congratulated the army, regular forces, joint forces, reservists, and the Sudanese people on the “great and glorious victory, which will have further consequences.” He praised the army’s recapture of Sinjah and the 17th Infantry Division headquarters on October 23, exactly one month after Al-Dinder. He vowed to continue operations until the RSF was defeated. Sinjah is the first state capital to be retaken by the army since the conflict began, providing a significant morale boost to its forces and allies. The victory has fuelled hopes of a further advance towards Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira state. Tens of thousands of people celebrated the recapture of Sinjah in Sennar city, Gedaref, Al Hawata, Shendi, and Omurdman. Thousands of residents celebrated the liberation of Sinjah, which had been under RSF control since June. Similar celebrations erupted in Al Hawata, a city in Gedaref state where many had sought refuge from the fighting.
