In the context of Joel, it reflects the prophet's sorrow over the impending judgment. The use of "alas" is a common biblical expression of woe, often found in prophetic literature to signal distress or disaster (e.g., <a href="/isaiah/5-8.htm">Isaiah 5:8</a>, <a href="/amos/5-16.htm">Amos 5:16</a>). It sets the tone for the seriousness of the message that follows.<p><b>For the Day of the LORD is near,</b><br>The "Day of the LORD" is a significant theme in the prophetic books, referring to a time when God will intervene decisively in human history. It is often associated with both judgment and salvation. In Joel's context, it is a warning of imminent judgment upon Judah due to their sins. This concept is echoed in other prophetic books such as <a href="/zephaniah/1-14.htm">Zephaniah 1:14-18</a> and <a href="/malachi/4-5.htm">Malachi 4:5</a>. The nearness of this day emphasizes the urgency for repentance and readiness.<p><b>and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.</b><br>The term "destruction" indicates the severity of the judgment that is to come. It connects to other scriptural instances where God is depicted as a warrior or judge, such as in <a href="/isaiah/13-6.htm">Isaiah 13:6</a> and <a href="/ezekiel/30-3.htm">Ezekiel 30:3</a>. Some understand these words as suggested by the prophet to the people, that they might use them in their solemn and sorrowful appeal to the Almighty. This is favoured by the Syriac, which adds, "and say," as if the prophet prescribed to them the substance of their address. We prefer taking them as the prophet's own words, which he era-ploys to justify the urgency of the appeal contained in the two preceding verses to the ministers of religion, the priests, to the magistrates, the elders, and to all the mere-bets of the community, even all the inhabitants of the land. The day referred to is the time of the judgment that was coming on the land through the locusts. The day of the Lord, first mentioned, it is said, by Joel, is the day when he inflicts judgments on sinners, as in the present instance; it may be a presage of that judgment that brought ruin on their city, temple, and nation. It may be an emblem of that judgment that wound up their nation by the destruction of their capital, or even of the final judgment when God shall destroy impenitent sinners and deliver his saints. This day of the Lord comes suddenly, secretly, and irresistibly; and, when it comes, it is a destruction from the Almighty, or, according to the Hebrew paronomasia, <span class="accented">keshod misshaddai</span>, equivalent to "ruin from the Resistless." The day of God's anger against Judah is a presage of that day when, as Judge of all, Jew and Gentile, he will take vengeance on his enemies. Joel's prophetic glance reached onward and forward, not only to the close of the Jewish, but to the conclusion of the Christian, dispensation. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/joel/1-15.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Alas</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1488;&#1458;&#1492;&#1464;&#1430;&#1492;&#1468;</span> <span class="translit">(&#8217;a&#774;&#183;h&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Interjection<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_162.htm">Strong's 162: </a> </span><span class="str2">Alas!</span><br /><br /><span class="word">for the day!</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1500;&#1463;&#1497;&#1468;&#1425;&#1493;&#1465;&#1501;</span> <span class="translit">(lay&#183;y&#333;&#183;wm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-l, Article &#124; Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3117.htm">Strong's 3117: </a> </span><span class="str2">A day</span><br /><br /><span class="word">For</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1499;&#1468;&#1460;&#1444;&#1497;</span> <span class="translit">(k&#238;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunction<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3588.htm">Strong's 3588: </a> </span><span class="str2">A relative conjunction</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the Day</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1443;&#1493;&#1465;&#1501;</span> <span class="translit">(y&#333;&#183;wm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3117.htm">Strong's 3117: </a> </span><span class="str2">A day</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of the LORD</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1456;&#1492;&#1493;&#1464;&#1428;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(Yah&#183;weh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3068.htm">Strong's 3068: </a> </span><span class="str2">LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israel</span><br /><br /><span class="word">is near,</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1511;&#1464;&#1512;&#1493;&#1465;&#1489;&#1433;</span> <span class="translit">(q&#257;&#183;r&#333;&#183;w&#7687;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adjective - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7138.htm">Strong's 7138: </a> </span><span class="str2">Near</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and it will come</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1464;&#1489;&#1469;&#1493;&#1465;&#1488;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(y&#257;&#183;&#7687;&#333;&#183;w)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_935.htm">Strong's 935: </a> </span><span class="str2">To come in, come, go in, go</span><br /><br /><span class="word">like destruction</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1468;&#1499;&#1456;&#1513;&#1473;&#1465;&#1430;&#1491;</span> <span class="translit">(&#363;&#183;&#7733;&#601;&#183;&#353;&#333;&#7695;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw, Preposition-k &#124; Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7701.htm">Strong's 7701: </a> </span><span class="str2">Violence, havoc, devastation, ruin</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from the Almighty.</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1502;&#1460;&#1513;&#1473;&#1463;&#1491;&#1468;&#1463;&#1445;&#1497;&#8234;&#8236;</span> <span class="translit">(mi&#183;&#353;ad&#183;day)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-m &#124; Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7706.htm">Strong's 7706: </a> </span><span class="str2">The Almighty</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/joel/1-15.htm">Joel 1:15 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/joel/1-15.htm">OT Prophets: Joel 1:15 Alas for the day!
